I actually find it quite annoying, I thought this kinda thing was only reserved for tribute bands (e.g. Pixies Tribute band named Trompe Le Monde)...but there are a lot of bands out there that claim the name of songs.....
What I especially find annoying is doing it to Captain Beefheart's songs: bands like, "Dali's Car", "Ella Guru", and a local annoyance "Ashtray Heart". (I actually emailed the band about it and they responded that 'nothing's sacred'....well Captain Beefheart is!) What possesses these people to attach themselves to other bands' songs? Homage, it is not. Rather, I think these people are uncreative and piggy-back on others'.
Very permissive indeed...
Very Weak...
Other examples:
Vivian Girls (a Snakefinger song) Eric's Trip (a Sonic Youth song)

i have a friend who used to be in a band called Planet of Sound, and they said they did it not becuase they particularly liked the Pixies or that song, but because they were hoping people would recognize the name and check them out. still lame

That's usually the reason...like, 'hey, i like the pixies, and they really influence my music, and I want people to know it'

It really is a lack of creativity, originality and the knowledge that the name of your band has fuck-all (thank you kathryn) to do with the music.
"Big Head Todd and the Monsters" "Ned's Atomic Dustbin" "The Postal Service" "Travis"
Stupid people name their bands after other bands' songs...or albums...or lyrics.
And no, it is not cool to name your band after Vonnegut or Salinger characters either. Grow the hell up and come up with a name that really doesn't mean anything at all...like "The Pixies" .
The old time experiment I play with ever so often was dubbed "The Bluesgills" by some dude at a party. Hell, why not?
There was a local blues-type band that called themselves "Red Devil Eye" because they were too stupid to realize that the lyric from an old Stevie Ray Vauhgan song was actually "...a can of Red Devil Lye..." and that it wasn't original at all...but when you're STUPID, you don't CARE about originality. |

There's actually a spanish band called Cecilia Ann, but I think they're not particullarly influenced by Pixies or Surftones.

I was in a band for a while called Sick Dick And The Volkswagens (from a Pynchon book Crying Of Lot 49) until I discovered there already was one.

Ok, maybe there are a couple of exceptions.
I'm a little too dogmatic sometimes i guess. |

Silverchair is named after a combination of the mispelt interpretation of the the Nirvana song sliver, and the classic alternative aussie rock song Berlin Chair by You Am I. |

I am not sure on this one but I've wondered if Sugar Ray was named after the Jesus and Mary Chain Song by the same name on Honey's Dead? |

I dont think its that big a deal, I like to recognise band names from songs as to show off my knowledge of pop music, I certainly wouldnt email someone that used a song as a band name, thats a little freaky if you ask me.

funny that "bands named after vonnegut" was mentioned, for i've always thought that the Pluto Gang would be a good band name. it proves that i know how to read, at least.

theres a philly band called paint it black.
and as for radiohead, its named after the talking heads song radio head.
i dont think its a big deal. if i like the band i'll say, 'i dont care that they named themselves after a song. names dont mean anything anyway.' if i dont like the band i'll say, 'theyre just a bunch of unoriginal bastards and i fucking hate them.' |
