This song just blows me away!! The Peel Sessions version is a force of nature - The Catholics rock hard & Frank is in top-screaming shape. That a song like this ends up as a B-Side speaks volumes about the quality of Frank & The Catholics work.
Simply Amazing.
Oh, I have to listen to it one more time

Was that the session where they played 'Changing of the Guards' too?
I remember listening to the entire show, as John would play other stuff and chat between each song. I was there most of the night waiting inpatiently for the next track, finger ready to press play/record on the stereo. That was a good night for radio. Frank live in England, at this very moment in time, and i'm listening.
(oh dear. slowly starting to miss the Catholics. isn't it amazing Franks still around making music. Think they call it longevity in the "biz". that thing they all strive for, yet rarely achieve)

Has anybody ever seen Frank play this song live with The Catholics? I've been to two Frank Black & The Catholics shows(DITS & DW/BLD tours) and I don't remember him ever playing this song. |

The only version I've heard is the one recorded with the Peel. Is there another studio recording floating around anywhere?
How it was left off an album sure beats me. |

I've always enjoyed 'Can I Get A Witness' too, and wondered bout this on a Catholics record. It seems a nice end to 'Cult of..' if you include the bonus tracks, but definately one in the mould of the Cs.
Do you think 'Witness' was the first clue Frank was heading down the Catholics path? |

There's also a version of Living on Soul that was recorded on the Pistolero Demo tape, along with a different version of Billy Radcliff. |

Sure, now that yahoo and hotmail have such huge amounts of space I can send those two tunes to you that way. The rest of the album is pretty much the same as the store release. I looked at the FTP deal here and wasn't able to get it to work, but if thats an option I'm open to it.

Hey Bill
I don't know if Witness was left off the album because it didn't suit the tone Cult had. Or maybe it's because it just wasn't good enough for the record, so was left off. Worthy only as a b-side. Not too sure on that one.
It just has the feel of a catholics song to me. Franks singing, his lyrics, the tempo of the song and what's being played, definately the lead. The Cult songs seem just as "quirky" as Frank had ever been, and has the overall polish of his first solo release, FB. I forget the colour! The Catholics don't have that sound FB solo had. I think it could be the lead work. Missing those little riffs. Sometimes I think FBs' riffs are just as important as the song itself. They give it a hook. Like Men in Black for one. The Catholics lead can be changed to whatever, it's just lead guitar. Which is what seperates the two groups for me.
I think the Catholics work is brilliant, but over the years has been distancing itself from the power pop riffs that be TOTY, FB and Cult. I think it may just be due to the recording process and the lead. Maybe not. (Not blaming Rich G, no way. Just mean songs not lead orientated. all the time)
So.....it took a while, sorry.......Can I Get A Witness to me sounds like a Catholics song. And after Cult of Ray, and much anticipation on my part, the mighty Catholics appeared. I wondered if anyone else think 'Witness' sounds a little different to FB solo. It was the first little sign to me FB was changing. Once FB and the Cs was released that is.
Brilliant song Living On Soul, Fissionignition. |

Yep, you're right. Village of the Sun for sure. And Last Stand always kinda reminded me of 'Everytime I Go Round' off FB, slowed down epic.
But I can see why Cult itself has more than one clue about the catholics. Nice one BillGoodman. The eyes, they open wider. |

Village of the sun is one of my all time favorites! But, is it possible to send the pistelero demo to me too? Please. Bitte. Kom igjen'a. When did that one start to circulate? I downloaded a couple of these demo-takes on soulseek a couple of weeks ago, i think it also included I want rock'n roll - which sounded as the same take as the one on the album, but with a countdown. Anyway, maybe we could do a little swapping and complete our collections (i still miss a song or two from the peel sessions with living on soul....). I've got most of the other stuff if you need any. gmail is a lot easier than soulseek.

Livin On Soul was on the All My Ghosts single, yeah. First catholic album after Cult. I wonder if it was written around the time of Witness and Village.
I'm just thinking to myself what a brilliant mini EP that would make, Post-Solo/Pre-Catholic:
Livin On Soul Every body Got The Beat Village of the Sun Baby, That's Art Can I Get A Witness
just thinking. |

Fast Billy Radcliffe version Higher sung by Frank a bit more 'emotion' in his vioce but that could also be the fact that he has to give everything to reach the high notes

Just had 'All My Ghosts' delivered through my door today. I'm really lovin' the Livin', but miss Richs' lead guitar effect that's on the Peel version. Still, it's one of my all time Frank faves. Thanks for the tip off bill.
And don't you think 'Changing of the Guards' sounds remarkably like the version they did for John Peel. Uncanny. |

it's a nice single 'conspiracy' (real name?) I too think that the chaning of the guards sound very much a like as for rich lead guitar on livin', since I knew the lyle workman-version first I am more attached to that one

W'oh. another version there Bill? With Lyle? Wow!
I thought I was a fan and in my own little world Franks number one, but being here I learn something new everyday.
(conspiracy, no not real. but would be cool if was. quite original and never in the Top 20 Names of the Year poll) |
