I've always loved this version, but hearing it live has totally re-sold me on the track. it makes it so much sadder and yet more beautiful. it is certainly one of the best b-sides of all time, any band ever.

to fully realize this thread, I think the film "Pump up the Volume"
starring Christian Slater deserves a mention.
I think I was in Jr. High when I saw that movie and heard the soundtrack.
-which, if memory serves, is where this song first saw daylight in the US-
I remeber thinking "oh, wow, this version is cool too!"

Were it not for Pump Up the Volume I would never of heard about the Pixies - so I feel I must celebrate both the film and the song that proved such an enticing introduction to the band I now love far more than is strictly healthy

i agree. one of my fav pixies tunes, but it was the first one i heard- through the pump up the volume soundtrack. kick out the jams mother f***!!

i was blown away when seeing the catholics live in chicago when they were touring for the brown album. they opened with this song- i was totally surprised and got crazy chills down my spine. good times.

I must be the only person in the world who prefers the fast version of Wave.

You're not on your own there Psychic.

I'm a fan of both but for some reason everytime I listen to a live show of the Ps it's a pretty dead cert that Wave will start with either a 'ting!' like Cheesemans, or a slow drum riff. After years upon years of this, I crave distortion every time.

But to stick to the thread, 'Surf' is a great song. It's just that they have two versions and so because of this I want distortion when Frank barre chords.

I prefer the fast version, too.

One weird thing about the Pixies discography is that the "Here Comes Your Man" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven" EPs seemed to have been in print for a long time. I remember seeing brand new copies in stores like Best Buy and Border's well into the late 90s.

I think I even picked up a Gigantic CD single in around '96

I think I like the fast version better, but the slow one is a good alternate take. I like it when a band reinterprets its own songs.

Hello everyone,

Have a question for you all. Which version is the FIRST version of Wave of Mutilation? Is it the slow version or the fast version?

The fast version sounds like a remix club version. You know how when a slow song comes out, like Enya's "Only Time", then they speed it up and add more music and voices so it can be played in clubs? They do this for a lot of songs. That's what the fast version sounds like to me.

It sounds like they're singing the lyrics too fast and struggling to get the words in to the fast paced music.

So, I was just wondering if you all could clear this up for me please? Which came first? The slow version or the fast version?

Thanks!

It's rather beautiful. It reminds me of the lead break in The Velvet Undergrounds 'Jesus'.

The fast is the first one. There's a third version too, the one from the BBC in 1989 wich is cool because it's between the fast and the slow...

Yes. It's the UK Surf version at a faster tempo. It's absolutely my favorite version. I think that was done on the John Peel radio show.

the uk surf version was the first pixies song i ever heard. i remember where i was, who i was with, and what i was doing. that was back in 1995. little did i know that i would hear it live some 10 years later. i think its a good make-out song.

I love Uk surf so much. I remember the first time I heart the Pixies on MTV2 (Monkey gone to heaven), i downloaded some of their stuff. I'd heard Wave was one of the classics so I downloades it. It was the UK surf version and until I bought Doolittle a few weeks later I thought it was the normal one. When I played Doolittle and got to track 3 and the guitar kicked in i was blown away. UK Surf is proably my favourite, but the original is awsome,
sorry to bore you
