Ok, i'm headed to the first of two shows in DC tonight, and I wanted to start a thread on this. First off (not so much for tonight but tomorrow) if anyone is looking to meet up beforehand and kick back a couple of drinks, the more the merrier. It would be cool to meet some of the FB.net denizens.
Also, i'm going to throw a show review up here (with, hopefully, a setlist for each night) and I guess other people should to if you feel compelled to do so...
Anyone know any good bars/restaurants/watering holes, near or around Constitution Hall? |

I was just at the show tonight. It was badass! :) Constitution Hall kinda sucked a bit, but it was an awesome experience for me, i never saw them perform before. Yea.... psychictwin will post a set list soon.

It was an awesome show. The seating in Constitution Hall kind of sucks if you're not on the floor, but overall it rocked.
The only thing I'm REALLY pissed off about is how Disclive ducked out of recording any of the shows this month  I was really looking forward to having a copy of the show on CD. |

You didn't see that they were taking sign-ups for the live CD's for the final 12 shows? It's not disclive, but sounds like the same idea. You can order them online too.

Man, this was such an amazing show. It's the first time I've ever seen the Pixies live in person (since I didn't become a Pixies fan until 1994), and it was just an incredible experience. They did a bunch of songs I was hoping to see live............ Where is my mind?, Velouria, Debaser, etc. Hopefully someone will post the full setlist soon........

| Despite a few uncharacteristically sloppy moments, it was a lovely set, and the band is in fine form. Nice, long Vamos solo. Great lights. Decent sound. But the crowd, man. The crowd was SO LAME. It really bugged me. Even Frank was moving around more than they were. |

I think that a lot of the crowd lameness had to do with the venue.
Assigned seats + 30 minute beer lines = subdued crowd |

There was a drunk guy behind me shouting out the lyrics (not singing, shouting) to a lot of the songs................ definitely annoying to be trying to enjoy a Pixies song and then have some drunk guy behind you shouting TAAAAAAAMMMMMMMEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

Though I wasn't expecting them to play 'tony's theme' or 'all over the world' I was till holding a glimmer of hope. It was good to hear them live again. I was taken aback by the seeming lack of enthusiasm, even amongst most of those on the floor. I found it impossible to remain stoic... and Kim's voice sounded absolutely beautiful... though sometimes I thought the overall sound was a tad bit muddled. I smiled a lot throughout the set, and loved the fact that their stage set was simple, stripped, but highly effective... just as always.
Loved how Kim's bass was the last lit on the stage, slowly fading to black.... |

If I remember correctly, stuff started around 9 o'clock (getting the instruments ready, etc.), and I think the Pixies themselves actually came on around 9:10 - 9:15.

i constantly hope for Rock Music, but apparently that will never happen. The Sad Punk and D=RxT too
I thought they sounded great especially considering the size of the venue
I was trashing about like a moron in my seat during the faster songs. not a good place to see the Pixies if you're not on the floor, like someone said

Did anyone else here see Frank Black and the Catholics at the Black Cat the last time they were here? I thought the crowd there was actually pretty enthusiastic.

| Yes! I was there at the Black Cat the last time they were here, and it was absolutely great. Very intimate, and small crowd...maybe 150 or so which made it perfect to me. The bar was right there, and you could get to it no problem. I'm heading to the show tonight wishing I had floor seats, but it didn't work out. I am close to the stage in section C, but in tier seating. I'm still sure it will be a great time since I never get the chance to see them the first time around, but the personal feel of a frank black show is uncanny. |

We were, literally, the only people standing in our section, feeling rather awkward and out-of-place, but what the hell? We would've felt even sillier sitting down(!) through a rock-n-roll concert. You would've thought some of those people were there for a filibuster or something. Jeez.
When the sound from the speakers is making your clothes flap against your body, you stand up, damn it! Did the D.A.R. fight for nothing?
That having been said, the Heaven/Wave/Winterlong/HereComesYourMan was beautiful, and Head On, UMass, Caribou and Tame particularly strong, I thought. |

i went to see them both nights and it was awesome... seeing the Pixies is great, but seeing the Catholics in a venue like the Black Cat is equally great
Zadillo, you're right, the crowd was more energetic at the Cat. but in general i have seen a lot of shows there too were people are standing around as if sedated |

It was also about 105 degrees in there last night. And the crowd overall appeared to be a bit older than I would have imagined, not that that has anything to do with it (hey, I'm 29 and I was rockin' out the whole time)

I posted earlier this week wondering about the lack of crowd energy at both Phili shows. That's too bad. People should be getting their groove on proper. Don’t they realize this may be the last opportunity to pay homage to one of the choicest bands around!
I’m gonna bust out some breakdancin in NY….Maybe even a little poppin and lockin

I was also at both nights at the Black Cat - definitely much more energy there and much easier to get tickets. I think it was because everyone was standing (for the most part) and they were two years younger. The venue was also cooler (the weather was too) and at least from where I was sitting last night - the sound was better at the Black Cat. At the Black Cat I was three bodies back the first night and at the stage the second - last night I was in section b row c - very good view of the stage, but not so great sound.
There were moments last night that just begged for the crowd - maybe at least the floor crowd - to bounce a bit. There was one guy that was totally enjoying himself on the floor - he especially made the Datsun show a bit more enjoyable - not that there was anything wrong with the Datsuns.
Also, the Bennies seemed different, did they change lineup?
I just turned 32 yesterday - great way to celebrate. I'm guessing the majority of fans are probably 25-35 years old.
I think the venue plays a major role in crowd energy. Maybe it was too swank a place. |

At least as near as I could tell most people seemed to be standing (I was in section Q, row B, so had a pretty good view of the floor and a lot of the other seating). Personally I'm not sure how much people could have moved, it struck me that it was pretty crowded and cramped. |

Funny thing is, my boyfriend (long time fan who had never seen the Pixies play live before) sat through almost the whole set, with the exception of the ovations at the end. He's a musician, so I think his take on things was wholly different from mine... but he just took it all in, even while sitting, with this shit eating grin across his face nearly all the time. Our seats were just off the floor, in the little boxes that had arm chairs in them. While I was disaapointed that I was the only spaz monkey in my direct vicinity, I know that my boyfriend was equally as thrilled... just not as transparent as I was about it. |

Great point Antoinette. I never cared that I seemed to be the only one grooving in my general vincinity. I just felt bad for the band. I only sit down at Barry Manilow shows...

there was some grooving going on in my section last night, i was happy to see.
my ear was basically right next to the right speaker, and i had a sidelong but excellent view of the band (save Dave a little bit).
last night's set was so much better in my opinion (both in songs played and in their energy.) then again, my torso and head were vibrating the whole time as well
come to think of it, my ears are still ringing |

Just got back from my behind the scenes experience in Washington DC, and there's really only one word to describe the past two days: surreal. Surreal to see one of my top five musical influences, performing together on stage. Surreal to actually meet and hang out with some of them on a normal level. It was an amazing two days.
A little background for those of you who don't know me, but I've been friends with The Bennies for a few years now. I played guitar for them for about a year before running off with the drummer's girlfriend. A lot has changed since (they have a new guitar player and drummer), but I've always remained friends with Jeremy (guitar, vocals, genius) and Jack (bass, vocals). They got me and their artist (who did the cover and inside art for their album, also my friend) Don work passes (all access). I acted as their guitar tech on the second night. You might have seen me on stage...I had the white/blue ringer T on.
I'm also known as an anti-reunion advocate. I don't like reunions in general. But after seeing the Pixies together, I knew this is what they wanted...it's their music, it's their legacy, and they can do as they please. They all seemed happy to be there with eachother on stage, and I couldn't have been more happy to see that. I got to see both sets from the side of the stage...almost the best seats in the house.
They played a hard rockin two shows on Tuesday and Wednesday, packed with favorites of mine (although I wish they would have played Blown Away or Into The White...but I did get Subbacultcha!). They were all in top form and sounded great. I think the highlight of both shows for me had to have been the extended Vamos solo. It was great...Charles was smiling and nearly laughing, they were all happy...great showmanship. I managed to record 3 minutes of the first night's solo on my camera, but the audio is all overdriven. I'll try to get the clip out on the net somehow.
The little bit they do before the encore where they thank everyone and Dave acts like he can't play is also hilarious. Last night's encore was balls out insane. They played some of their fastest and loudest songs in their catalogue. What a way to end the show.
After the Wednesday show, half the Bennies, Don and I met up with Joey, Dave, and some of the roadies at this really hip "bar" in DC called the 18th Street Lounge. There's no sign or anything...it's above a mattress store and is pretty much somebody's apartment with a big bar, DJ playing some cool music, pretty dark, candles, antique furniture...awesome place. Joey and Dave actually came over and talked to us. I had met Dave back in Nov 02 and he's a really nice guy. Joey is also cool as hell...pretty quiet and casual. I talked to him about his side project work and we talked a little about Undeclared. He was also upset by the cancellation; he loved the show and referred to Judd Apatow (creator) as a genius. It was a short but pleasant experience. We were all just shocked to be sitting around, drinking with half of the Pixies.
Last night after the show I got to shake hands with Kim. She's very sweet; I had my Snoopy "It's cool to flash a silver smile" shirt on, and she asked what it said. She asked if I had braces, and "Yeah, at one point." She liked it. Afterwards, we got a photo op with The Bennies and the Pixies in the Pixies' dressing room. Both bands together for a picture. I wish I would have snapped that but I didn't want to be rude and ask them to stand still for one more photo. I'll get a copy from The Bennies' new guitar player.
We also got to talk to TV On The Radio, who fucking *rock* hard (get their album NOW) and are very, very nice guys. They're pretty new to the scene (they said they've been together for 15 months and been touring for 14 of those months). I joined the drummer, singer, and the crazy-haired guitar player to watch the Pixies from the side of the stage.
I got some pretty decent photos overall, and I'm in the process of uploading them. I'll post a link as soon as they're up. I gotta thank The Bennies for allowing me the experience...and the forum for letting me brag a bit. Sorry :P

some songs they played the 2nd night included River Euphrates (YES), I Bleed, and Dead. plus the balls-to-the-wall fucking ROCKING encore they treated us to (if I remember correctly it was Isla de Encanata --> Something Against You --> Crackity Jones --> Broken Face...someone correct me if I'm wrong)...
I got to see the best show ever (at least from my experience) up close and personal, and to make it better with an awesome girl i've been dating who I turned onto the Pixies and who absolutely loved the show. Doesn't get much better than that, folks.

Glad you got to see such a good show! I'm still happy I got to see the Pixies at all, even if I apparently got the worse show. I never thought I'd get to experience seeing them in person, and I had a blast.
