Since this is a very cat friendly place (excluding cat hating Tre of course) - thought some of you might be able to offer some advice. At work we've adopted a stray cat and her kitten (they would have died in the freezing English/Arctic circle winter). They're both now much healthier, been defleaed etc the only problem is is that the kitten hates us (mother cat - Paris is cool and my new best friend), but no amount of me lying on the floor making cat noises/food bribery/expensive toy offering works with her daughter. I think it all stems from us setting up a cage trap to get her to the vets.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

I thought I could see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it was
just some b*stard with a torch, bringing me more work.

Catnip my friend, get the little feline good and stoned.

Or... I dunno just ignore it. Cat's can be weird like that sometimes. I used to think my cat hated me until I'd wake up at 4 in the morning and find her curled up between my legs or beside my head.

floop speaks the truth. Our cat Alice was found in a Chicago alley dumpster. It took her years to acclimate to people, and now she's very demonstrative and extremely loving.

She can still go a bit feral when she's playing though, but that's part of her endearing personality.

She loves John, the caretaker - it's just the rest of us she hates. I think she has a sugardaddy thing going with him.

Seriously, just pretend that you don't care. That's what I did, and now my cat runs up to the door when I come home.

Some cats are more attracted to particular genders, like on of mine wont go near guys (well, she does a bit now, but few and far between).

One of mine is also a feral, shes a bit schizo, but shes warmed up in her old age. Just keep trying, work out when she wants to be left alone. ferals will usually come to you when they want to, rathe rthan the other way round.

Now I do as I please and lie through my teeth. Someone might get hurt but it won't be me. I should probably feel cheap but I just feel free and a little bit empty. No it isn't so hard to get close to me. There will be no arguments. We will always agree. And I will try and be kind when I ask you to leave. We will both take it easy. But if you stay too long inside my memory, I will trap you in a song tied to a melody and I will keep you there so you can't bother me.

cats seem to want very few things.

I refute any allegation that they "love".
They want soft and warm.
They want fully of belly.
They want empty of shit.
They want to chase something but not catch it.
They want to chew something but not eat it.
They want to destroy only things you want to keep.

I still don't think they love. We do and we, thru transferance of some kind, project our love onto and into them, but I really don't think they love. They just want to be safe and warm and fed and to play. We, the humans, represent all these things, so the cat "likes" us.
I like cats ok, but they ain't foolin me.
I got their little kitty-cat numbers.
I'm onto their little games.
My cat begs from me while I'm making hamburgers, he gets a little chunk covered in ceyenne. He no longer begs when I'm cooking.

Surfer, I say leave it alone (maybe even let it spend a few above zero nights outside) and don't feed it for a while. It will warm up to you...you'll find it chewing on your toes at 4am in no time.

I think cats can love KSR. Ours does. For example, she takes care of us when we are sick. Somehow she knows, and is very attentive and affectionate. There are other ways too.

chemical flood if we accept that emotions and thoughts are translated instantaneously into chemicals, we are shocked at the bathing process that flushes our insides and outsides - posing as needs and desires. in addition to the ordinary caffeine and nicotine fix, there is a specific chemical addiction for “I overate yesterday” “how can I win so-and-so’s attention?” “I remember when we blah blah blah” “I need to buy whatever for the apartment” etc. all this and we haven’t even opened our eyes. then it hits you, these aren’t the thoughts of someone who is free.

I agree my (dead) cat was my besyt friend - really. She knew if I was upset, even when i wasnt showing it or pretending not to be, she would, as apl said look after me when im ill, all sorts of things. they are very affectionate, but yet independent..thats all.

Wonderful news. Congrats.

By the way, this is my absolute favorite cat toy company. I highly recommend the stuffed crackly catnip animals, if you can find them in your local grocery store/pet store. Their toys are amazing and very popular around the house. Even better than a paper bag!

I knew someone would counter and apl - I have huge, Mt McKinley sized piles of respect for you but....no. I just don't think so.

The cat that 'senses' when you are sick wants to play. They are physical animals. It wants you to get up and move so it can enjoy the side of its brain that turns on when something in its environment moves.
Its either that, or the cat is happy you are being still so it can get close to you and enjoy your warm softness.

Cats definitely know things. They are complex beings. They know patterns, learn things, have familiarity with other animals (inlcuding people), but I do not think they 'love'.

They want you, they need you, but there ain't now way they're ever gonna love you.

Now, don't be sad [don't beee saaad] cause two out of three ain't bad.

Whereas a cat can be placed under a tire to secure a car from rolling downhill.

neither species can retreive beer from the fridge, like my cat
