The show was everything I had hoped for. The band seemed to be having fun, Kim smiled through the whole show, Joey played a great solo, David drummed like crazy and Frank...what was it that the Marble Index guy said Frank would do? Get right in up to his elbow and tear out our bowels? Well, he definitely didn't disappoint.
The setlist, for those of you who are wondering, is as follows:
1. In Heaven 2. Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf) 3. Where Is My Mind? 4. Nimrod's Son 5. Mr. Grieves 6. The Holiday Song 7. Cactus 8. Here Comes Your Man 9. Is She Weird? 10. Bone Machine 11. River Euphrates 12. Dead 13. Crackity Jones 14. Debaser 15. U-Mass 16. Head On 17. Gouge Away 18. Broken Face 19. Tame 20. Isla De Encanta 21. Hey 22. Caribou 23. Monkey Gone to Heaven 24. Number 13 Baby 25. Ed Is Dead 26. Vamos
Encore: 27. Wave of Mutilation 28. Gigantic
The crowd was really into the show, but it wasn't nearly as rough as the last one I went to. I was directly in front of Kim right up against the railing. Someone bumped into me once, during Gigantic, but that's it. I was absolutely amazed that everyone was so considerate. People were pushing and stuff in front of Joey, but even that didn't look too bad. The band didn't leave the stage before the encore, and they looked thrilled to be there while they smiled, waved and walked back and forth trying to take it all in. Joey did some great work with the drumstick, pedals, patch cord, cell phone, etc. Kelley was there hiding behind the speakers for the whole show, so you could only see a trail of smoke and her video camera. Beer was only $4 a bottle (poured into a plastic cup, of course). The Disclive CDs sound great and don't seem to have the millisecond gaps that people didn't like on the spring tour (All songs are tracked individually with songs 1-15 on disc one and the other 13 on disc two). All things considered, it was an amazing night. Hope everyone else enjoyed it. |

Jefrey With One F, dude you were probably two or three people away from me. I was hugging the rail right between Frank and Kim. They put on an amazing show last night. Better than Toronto I personally think. But the crowd was pretty tame which was pretty unexpected considering the other shows I've been to had pretty intense crowds. I like how Frank inverted the lyrics on "Where Is My Mind?" right near the end of the song. |

Short time lurker, first time poster.
Went to the Hull (err, Gatineau) show last night. Sat not stood: we were on Joey’s side of the stage. Might have been better if they’d set up to use the width of the stadium instead of the length. That way we’d get a more balanced view of the stage. I guess we could have sat at the back in the behind-the-net seats but not seen the Pixies up close. Might’ve got a more balanced sound there, too, though the sound was good in any event. It was loud and my left ear has been blocked most of the morning.
All the seats were either general admission seating or standing. If you bought a seat ticket, security was not letting you into the standing area. At some points there were more people in the beer area at the back than in front of the stage. Half-way into the Pixies set, security removed the barriers and people flowed in front of the stage.
The Marble guys were ok but every song was the same: incoherent lyrics leading into a extended jam. The Datsuns, well, they sucked. I kept looking at the stadium clock hoping their set would end. The crowd was ok, a little muted. Better than most Ottawa crowds, though. Ottawa shows seem to attract far too many people who are willing to spend cash on tickets and then try to talk over the band. Drives me nuts.
Pixies set was amazing. Blew me away. It’s always better when a band looks like it’s having fun rather than simply going through the motions. They were laughing and joking with other all evening. Hi-lights for me: U-Mass, Wave(s) of Mutilation and Joey’s guitar trick segment. I’ve been humming “It’s educational!” all day.

It IS educational!
The crowd was much mellower than at the Montreal shows. I got the second one on DiscLive. Would love to hear Hull.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |

Good to hear you were right up front, jvince. When they started letting people in and the guy opened the far doors (not the ones where the lineup actually started), my one thought was honestly, "That's not fair. jvince said he was going to be lining up early to make sure he was up front, and they're letting in the later people first." I felt a little better when I got inside, though, and saw that the floor was almost empty. There were a few people in front of Frank's area, but I had no problem getting into position right in front of where Kim would be. Actually, I think it was another ten minutes or so after that until anyone came and stood to my right.
The highlight of the night was, of course, Head On. My wife and I saw the Pixies in Victoria this spring and she wasn't sure about going again. She loves them, but didn't really see the point. I tried to convince her that, even if they're playing the same stuff, it's technically a separate tour. That didn't work, so I told her that it might be her only chance to see Head On performed live. Worked like a charm. It put my butt on the line in case they didn't play it, so it was both a relief and one of the best live songs I've ever heard.
I also got to see Is She Weird? (another favourite), U-Mass (I got a ticket for a friend to see them in Calgary...he came back and told me how amazing this song was live, but they didn't play it in Victoria...definitely worth the extra 7 month wait), The Holiday Song, Dead, and Ed Is Dead for the first time. Vamos was amazing. It was great to finally see the drumstick guitar solo (he missed the catch in Victoria) and, somehow I missed it at the show, but the Jeopardy theme was awesome (eternally grateful to Disclive - if it weren't for them, I'd never have known he played it). And to hear Frank whisper "Puñeta! Cabrona!" at the beginning...just classic.
I agree about the crowd. It seemed pretty subdued. I have to say, though, it sure beat getting kicked in the head by about ten separate crowdsurfers in Victoria. It seemed like more of a Pixies love-in than rocking out to the Pixies. Of course, that might be my optimistic side coming out, since it was hard to tell how many people were actually Pixies fans.
At any rate, the CDs have rarely left the stereo (and when they do, it's to take them out to the CD player in the car when I'm out running errands). It's been a week, but I'm still not willing to move on. |

Almost went to the Montreal Show. Thought about th Hull show. Went to the 2 Vancouver shows in April, bailed out of Coachella, got caught up at Austin City Music festival and had to sell the ticket that I was able to get at the lsat minute...
But I did get a ticket for their Boston homecoming this week. I'll tell you one thing. I will go frigg'n nuts if they play HeadOn. You won't want to be close to me. ;-)
Ahhh Pixies. What kind of imbeciles don't just luv'm to death. -rog.

From what I've read, they actually played Head On twice at the second Camden show. Kim played it in C# the first time, so they played it again right away in C. I heard that the shows were taped (audience recording), so I'm hoping to hear that soon.
