After many years and countless listens, this song still takes my breath away every time I hear it. Only the genius of Frank can get me choked up and feeling sympathy for water. I'm always rooting for it by the end.

I hereby nominate St. Francis Dam Disaster for the Coolest Song in the Universe Award.

Kinda dead in here today, huh?

I also adore this song, however I've always felt sympathy for the "thousand souls," not the water.

If anybody wants to visit the site of the dam (and what's left of the ruins), I've been there and can provide directions.

he's played this live, if i'm not mistaken. i know i have some bootleg with this live (solo at least)..

i'm a fan too. i think its one of his most accomplished tunes. and, i find, a good one to introduce people to the later FB&C's with. anyone who i've lent DITS to usually first mentions St. Francis.

on the less serious side, it can be entertaining to think of the song as a metaphor for being stuck in a car and having to take a pee.

I heard somewhere Frank took a while to put lyrics to this. Wonder what else it could have been about? who knows? Frank I guess.

To me alot of Franks work is about the song first, lyrics secondary. But when you hear something like this they're a match made in heaven.

I'm with BLT too, the water is one fierce driving force, my heart goes to the drowned. How many, no one really knows.

St. Francis Dam Disaster for the Coolest Song in the Universe Award? It's in the running that's for sure. Though I could give you a list of tens more. All by the Black no worries.

Something about the moment where the water goes "her final mile" and the guitar or pedal steel or whatever it is makes these three solemn pangs. That part always gets me and starts to put a lump in my throat. FB does have an amazing way with lyrics although I usually just focus on music since I have trouble understanding lyrics in songs.

Maybe he had an idea for a main theme, but no specific lyrics.

I was wondering if it would bother Frank if we suggested he bring a teleprompter to his next catholics tour just to humor us with a performance while he was particularly bernaise'd.

He didn't do too bad a job with his words when he finally needed them. He makes it seem so easy.

I always wondered how fun and strange for bands to practice and perfect songs without any lyrics or singing. Then I wonder about the songs Frank turned from instrumentals into fully versed versions and vice versa. Only he knows, but I do wonder which ones.
