I do like Baja Fresh. The burritos are good, but a bit small. I nominate Schlotzsky's (who aren't quite as good now that they've made the sandwiches smaller, but the bread is still fantastic) and Rubio's.
And if we're going to allow regional chains, Roberto's (there must be at least 30 of them in San Diego) is better than Baja Fresh. |

That might explain their B rating by the Health Department, but who the needs sanitary Mexican food. Nothing has ever tasted better than a Roberto's Carneasada Burrito. |

i found their carne asada to be tough and unjuicy, and their salsa uninspired and watery. overall a disappointing experience.
at Baja you can order the "Burrito Dos Manos".. which, is basically a burrito designed for two people. but, if you're a true American, you can eat it all by yourself.
personally, i get plenty filled up with the "Burrito Ultimo" or "Baja Burrito"
mmm. baja burrito.

Salsa? The Roberto's Carneasada Burrito has no salsa. It's meat, gucamole, and a few onions. God, I need one.

I'd be a little suspicious of any restaurant so desperate to convince its patrons their food is 'fresh' that they put it into the name of the restaurant itself.
NOTE to Fast Food chains: Fresh != having just opened the bag from hq

Baja's red sauce is almost hot enough. They get marks for that. |

i'm talking about the "salsa" they offer with it. you know, those thickly chopped stale tomatoes served in that little white paper cup? unless it's changed since i've been there..

cult, it really is fresh though. it's so fresh, it's in their name. you should try it next time you come to the good old US of A.
ramona, you might have one nearby. check the website www.bajafresh.com
when i was living in Baltimore last year i used to drive 45 minutes to a Baja Fresh in the suburbs just to get my mexican fix. that's how lacking they are in Mexican on the east coast

Just like I'm suspicious of any news network so desperate to convince its viewers that they are 'fair and balanced' that they paste the phrase all over their show.
Though I'm sure Baja Fresh ain't lying. I gotsta try it sometime.

THE MAN is mistaken.
I don't remember any paper cups of Pico de Gallo, but I do remember little plastic cups with fairly hot sauce. Their 3 rolled tacos with guacamole are pretty good too. |

it's good if it's late on a Saturday night and you're drunk in San Diego (as i have been).. but then most anything is good when you're drunk and hungry.
maybe i'm thinking of a different place in San Diego though. i'm open to that possibility, as i trust Darwin's judgement. being a Peet's coffee drinker, and a PHD.

To end this ugly fight, I also defer to floop's obvious knowledge of Mexican food. Baja Fresh is a fine fast food restaurant and is an oasis of Mexican food if you don't live in the Southwest or on the West coast.
Now does anyone else have a best fast food restaurant? In-n-Out is another good one. |

BLT, i'm envious.
did you ever try that Columbian restaurant i told you about, La Maria, on Victory (East of Cahuenga).. you should take your wife there. get the "Bandejo Paisa". you will thank me.
i think we should start a "Los Angeles restaurants" thread and alienate 99% of the forum members.

Chipotle is delicious.
Even better than Baja fresh.
Deliciously juicy marinaded meat, perfectly-made guacamole, whole black beans or pinto vs. lame refried excuse for beans, and passionate salsas. They even use free-range chickens and pigs. Lots of vegetarian menu choices too.
Do you have them where you live floop? Do you have another opinion?

I reiterate, why don't decent fast food joints have "drive-thrus"? |

The closest I get to Mexican fast food is when I drive by Taco Bell on my way to school everyday. Never been inside a Taco Bell, I'm proud to say. Would be interested in checking out this so called Baja Fresh though. From what I understand, I'm severly lacking in the Mexican fast food portion of the food pyramid.
Turn the spit on that pig and kick the drum and let me down. Put my clarinet beneath your bed 'til I get back in town.

I've only eaten at Chipotle once in Santa Barbara. I thought it was pretty good (with Baja Fresh being better) but a bit expensive for what it was. Also I think they put beans and rice in their burritos which I can't stand, but maybe they offer burritos without those.
Also, perhaps it doesn't matter, but did you Chipotle is owned by McDonalds. http://www.licenseenews.com/news/news50.html |

No I didn't! Thanks for the link, darwin.
That sucks in a way, but at least I like Chipotle, and their food choice philosophy (natural, free-range, etc.). Maybe it will provide a way for McDs to become a better company. One thing that PETA managed to do that was productive was getting McDs to demand humane treatment and environment in chicken farms. Considering how huge McDs is, that was a major influence on agribusiness. So, I guess I'm happy to support their little experiment in providing healthy good-tasting food that was produced in a more humane manner than most.
edit: then again, after reading that website further, maybe I won't. Bastards. |

i think Chipotle is decent, but not as good as Baja Fresh. i like the fact that they have carnitas at Chipotle (sadly missing from the Baja Fresh menu).. but their meat doesn't taste as good as Baja. probalby because it's sitting in those things all day.
also, they don't have fish tacos.
if i were somewhere where i couldn't get good Mexican food and they had a Chipotle, i'd be pleased.
i think Baja Fresh should be open in the morning and start serving breakfast burritos. tell me that's not a good idea.

In their defense, I think McDonalds bought them out. So, their philosophy was (or is?) their own (not some marketing decision by McDonalds). Also, while McDonalds is to be avoided for health reasons, I think they have made some progressive decisions that then ripple through the whole industry (like getting rid of styrofoam and the chicken farm example). I remember hearing something on NPR about how if McDonalds changes the regulations they put on their suppliers then it changes how almost everyone operates since McDonalds is such a big buyer. |

What, are you used to coal in your stocking and it's so shocking to think you might get something good?
BTW, and I hope I am not bursting anyone's bubble with this piece of info, but the heroic Baja Fresh also has a parent company and it's . . . . . . . Wendy's.

i think next in line behind Baja Fresh is Poquito Mas. i think it's only an LA chain. f'ing good fish tacos and great carnitas.
still, nothing beats the chicken burritos at Baja Fresh.

The Story of Fresh
In August of 1990, Jim and Linda Magglos took out a third mortgage on their house and introduced the all-fresh, fire-grilled, quick-casual concept of the first Baja Fresh® Mexican Grill to Newbury Park, California. The incredible flavors and generous portions of their offering created a loyal following, and soon Baja Fresh® Mexican Grill became the most exciting eatery in Ventura County. Like many of us, Jim and Linda grew up on fast food, but as their tastes matured and the fast food offerings remained the same, they began to crave something more, something FRESH. Jim and Linda envisioned a restaurant filled with delicious, fresh aromas of grilled meats and spicy vegetables, with festive music in the background - all in a bright, clean setting where smiling people prepared your order right before your eyes. It was this dream and dedication to quality and freshness that continues to make Baja Fresh® the success that it is. Today, Baja Fresh® Mexican Grill is evolving from a regional phenomenon into a national success. The rapid success of Baja Fresh®, evidenced by its high unit sales and the overwhelming number of requests to franchise, attracted the attention of restaurant industry veterans and the nation's leading investment firms. In 1998, Jim and Linda realized that the concept they created required careful management in order to reach its full potential. It was this realization that brought Greg Dollarhyde and Pete Siracusa into the picture. Dollarhyde and Siracusa, collectively have over 60 years of restaurant experience. Their restaurant experience married with their passion for FRESH brought the total restaurant count from 29 to well over 288 today. Baja Fresh® Mexican Grill's success took yet another leap in the summer of 2002, when Wendy's International acquired the company. Baja Fresh® Mexican Grill functions as a wholly owned subsidiary and remains loyal to the vision of becoming "the leading national restaurant brand known as the defining standard in FRESH Mexican food."

I meant Poquito Mas. But thanks for that story. I love the American entrepreneurial spirit almost as much as I love a good burrito.
floop, I gotta change the subject for a sec here to share some challenging feelings. I am feeling down, man. I started a Hearther Locklear thread and not a one person has posted. It's a crushing feeling, man, a real bad one. Don't people appreciate her genius? I'm feeling all alone and bad. No burrito can ease this pain.
