Anyone here played a Danelectro U2?
They are supposed to be great for that '60s surf sound (and they were one of the few companies that made left-handed guitars).
They are made out of hardboard apparently.
Half Life 2 comes out tomorrow.

"The minimum requirements for Half-Life 2 and other Source engine games are:
* 1.2GHz processor * 256MB RAM * DirectX 7 graphics card * Microsoft Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
The recommended requirements for Half-Life 2 and other Source engine games are:
* 2.4GHz processor * 512MB RAM * DirectX 9 graphics card * Microsoft Windows 2000/XP"
From http://www.halflife2.net/index.php?page=faq#HL2Q5
(Just because I was wondering myself... In fact I expected the requirements to be much higher.)
"Just kill the one with the sword first." "Ah," Reagan says, raising his waxed and penciled eyebrows, and cocking his pompadour in Shaftoe's direction. "Smarrrt--you target them because they're the officers, right?" "No, fuckhead!" Shaftoe yells. "You kill 'em because they've got fucking swords! You ever had anyone running at you waving a fucking sword?" |

Yeah, the graphics were fantastic. Some of the nicest water I've seen in a game without using a Matrox card. I really enjoyed that the bosses were tough but not inhuman or anything. Or at least not any more inhuman than you.

You running XP or Win-64 alpha? Also, two 300 GB SATA drives is massive.

Computer games still have bosses? Wicked. I think the only games I've played in the last three years are Colonisation and Championship Manager 2.

XP Pro. I don't use any new OS from Microsoft unless it has at least one service pack, so thumbs definitely down on an alpha. AMD has always been faster than Intel when it comes to gaming, 64-bit capable or no. Two words on the 680GB storage: video editing.

Yeah, those AMDs have killed even if you really don't get the performance you could be out of them with a 32-bit os. I definitely wouldn't touch an alpha of any os myself, but a lot of people with the 64-bit have been playing with it to see what their processor can do. The reason I asked is you were bound to run into some serious problems running some of those games if so.
Also, your massive storage suddenly seems relatively puny. :) Well, OK, still not puny. Let's use reasonable. And I haven't used an Intel since AMD finally distanced itself from their awful K6 line, which I, at the time, swore would be my last encounter with an AMD chip. Now I have an Athlon 2000+ which I upgraded some time ago from a Thoroughbred 1333.

The whole level boss thing comes to us from the world of cinema. When you consider that James Bond, for example, must always defeat the "number two" before the main villan. It's fitting that they'll be making a Doom3 movie, making the process come full circle.

Screw all this, I just mod-ed my Xbox and am playing Mike Tyson's Punch Out! in all its 8-bit glory. Graphics are for losers with no imagination. Remember when a yellow square meant something?

I cannnnnnnot fucking wait till tommorow morning...I've got my copy of the Collector's Edition set aside to pick up at 10AM sharp (I can't believe our store only got 5 copies of it? wtf?). I have off tommorow so I'll be playing all day. The new revolution in PC gaming begins TOMMOROW.

Well, I WISH I was that excited but I don't think it's going to be that great. I would love to be wrong, but I imagine it'll be a somewhat standard if perhaps above average fps.

Only time will tell. One thing seems certain, Half Life 2 can't be any worse than Doom3. Doom3 was a good example of initial reaction giving way to hype. All the established and respected game reviewers slobbered all over that game when it first came out. But after a while, people stopped and said, "hey, you know this game looks great but it really isn't very good overall."
I expect a similar phenomenon for Half Life 2: hype-influenced reviews followed by calm-after-the-storm reflection.
But compare the kind of game design Valve is known for with the kind of game design Id is known for. I don't think Id has ever been in the vanguard as far as game design goes.

I downloaded Doom 3 to check it out and see if it is worth the buy in the early hype days, but haven't even bothered installing it. I was completely addicted to Doom and Doom 2 and played many an all-nighter deathmatch with my cousin over our 14.4 modems (since playing at night we weren't too likely to have our moms pick up the phone and destroy our game) back in the day. Maybe I'll get around to trying it for nostalgia. Maybe that'll be enough for me to love it/buy it. But with HL2 being released today, I'm heading to Future Shop at lunch to pick up a copy and may never get to Doom 3.

Having now played it, I can affirm that the tonnes of praised heaped upon it have (so far) been justified. This game is so interactive, so beautiful, and so much fun that I could scarcely bring myself to quit.
For anyone playing along with me (and without giving too many details that I give away something to those behind), I just got to the part where you round a corner and are surrounded by three rocket-launcher platforms and a machine gun.

I've heard similar accolades from the people that have gotten through Steam unscathed (heh heh). Since I don't have my new PC yet, I've opted to wait. But boy is there a large amount of complaints about Steam! The kiddies are not happy. Dean, I take it you got through OK?

I remember receiving the first Half Life as a gift for Christmas the year it was released. I STILL have the same computer. Finaly there is a reason to upgrade to a new system. Now I just have to convince the BOSS we need it.

Yeah, the Steam thing was not so hot <rimshot>. Registering online took forever, only to have it report that Steam was too busy so I can play HL2 Standard until they confirm my registration. And then another 20 mins while it 'unlocked' files. Not to mention leaving it on in the background for single player mode sucking up the occasional all-too-vital CPU cycles. I didn't try the multiplayer, so I can't attest to the quality of that, but I can only imagine...
I should also mention that the physics are really incredible. From standing on top of a wobbly pile of tires to some good ol' optical lens theory, buoyancy, gravity, and so on.There've been several moments where I did something without thinking about it and then realized what I had just done and thought, "Wow, I can't believe I just did that in a video game".

I've logged in about 5 hours of the game (I made it to the lab at the end of the river) and there is no doubt in my mind that Half-Life 2 is quite possibly the best game ever made. It deserves every ounce of hype it was given...there is no other game out there that even comes close to what Half-Life 2 has to offer.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

I've no internet connection at home and i don't have the administrative rights to download stuff onto my work computer so it seems ol' Gordon Freeman is gonna have to wield that crowbar without me for a while. What was wrong with Valve having a phone registration line?

Sounds pretty impressive. It's a bit maddening to have to wait to play it but I'd rather experience it on the new PC, due to arrive early next week.
I can wait I can wait I can wait...

I guess Valve doesn't think people like you (no internet at home) exist anymore. :(

Well, truth be told, it is pretty rare for a home to have ZERO internet connection, including dial-up, wouldn't you say?
By the way, I totally caved in: I couldn't take being excluded from all the wonderful things people were saying about HL2, so I made my "silver package" purchase via Steam last night. It downloaded in about 2 hours with no major problems. It's quite an experience, much better than Doom 3, imo.
I love that Robert Culp plays Dr. Breem: the Big Brother-esque figure that greets you in the opening chapter. The things he says are very creepy, all that "instinct is no longer relevent" stuff. I always liked Culp and the fact that he's so likable is the reason why Breem is so creepy!
Of course, I'll have to download it again when I get the new computer, but it won't cost me anything more.

WTF! That's barely giving it the credit it deserves. Doom 3 was a nice engine, that's all. However, after playing Half-Life 2, Doom 3 already seems outdated.
Best Game EVER.

Really? I love it, but I don't know about best game ever. It seems wrong to give such a title to a FPS however good it might be. It might be the best FPS ever or certainly top 3, but, I don't know...
Maybe I'll change my mind as I play it more. It would be premature for me to say anything yet of that degree one way or the other.

I'll be able to give my final answer once I finish the game. I don't want the game to end.
There haven't been too many games that would be considered revolutionary...this has to be one of them. It's easily the best FPS ever...no doubt. There isn't another FPS that comes close to it other than Half-Life 1. They hardly left any stone unturned...there's just so much you can do. Wait till you get the gravity gun, it's quite possibly the best weapon in any FPS ever.
One thing is for certain: there isn't a person out there who can say this game sucks on any level. How many games can you say that about?
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

You know that's very true. I've not seen one, not a single person, trash this game. Do you know how rare that is? It's nearly impossible. Sure, they may complain about Steam but at least those same folks can keep that dubious experience separate from the game experience. That unanimous opinion is what's truly revolutionary.
Now the wait begins again for Duke Nukem Forever.
