if you are ever hiking by yourself and bitten by a poisonous snake, here's what to do: contrary to popular belief, cutting the area of the wound to draw out the blood is ineffective and can make matters worse. the most important thing is not to panic. and DO NOT try to walk or run to get help. this will only speed up the spread of the venom through the system.
what you need to remember is apply pressure and immobilize the area of the wound. apply pressure by bandaging the would tightly, but not too tightly. you can easily fashion a homemade bandage from shirt or sock. then, to immobilize, ideally you want to create some kind of splint or sling.. try to find a long piece of wood and tie it to your leg or arm with the extra sock and/or shirt.
once firmly tied in, lasso the end of the splint to nearby tree or cactus, keeping the splint at 50° angle away from your body. now that you are strapped in and the limb is immobilized, control your breathing and remain calm as you wait to die in the middle of nowhere.

Wow, thanks!
Shark bite is almost the exact opposite I guess. All the other surfers in the lineup are telling me if a great white attacks me, to if at all possible, first enlarge the wound, then panic, scream and thrash as much as possible. They said this behaviour will scare off the shark and my survival will thus be insured.

Do you really think the other surfers are concerned about your survival, Mr Hippo?
I don't think so...

I'm confused by KOK dropping an English "u" in "behavior". To quote Barney sitting on the bar stool at Moe's :" Whatsamatter Homer?" Are you going all fancy-boy on us?

Maybe that's also the way they spell it in Iraq.

No, I just can't spell.
Kay, did you know my last name is Homer? Or is that some prior post reference?

KOK
I love it when you call me "Kay." It sounds so...nice.
Um, you mentioned your last name in one of our thrilling email exchanges and above I was trying to show you how, um, very witty I am ... or something.
I'm glad to know that you're still American and not one of those Brits, like say, oh, Tre, who can't spell a word without spelling it weird or pronounce it without that funny accent they do over there.

My Nana's name was Catherine. They used to call her "Kay". I loved her dearly. I once road my Big Wheel six miles to get to her house. I was three. My nana was horrified. She called my mom asking "Where is Jason?" My (usually stoned) mom was like "Outside playing on his Big Wheel".

some irony: i actually went for a hike today, by myself, and guess what crossed my path on the trail? a huge rattlesnake! i kid you not. i had my head down hiking away.. deep in thought (about molecular physics) and suddenly i see this snake like 5 feet in front of me. i just sat there and waited for it to continue on into the bushes, meanwhile picking up a nearby rock just in case. the whole time i was thinking "this is some kind of punishment for starting that thread. i'm going to get bitten and have to create a sling and then die out here alone, in the middle of nowhere"

I was mountain biking this summer with a couple of friends and there were two rattlers that crossed the path in front of us. They went into some waist high shrubs and after they got in there they both started climbing the shrubs and sticking their heads up to get a look at us. It was really unusual behavior. They were both young so maybe it was the first time they had ever seen humans. It was pretty cute actually. They looked for a bit then went on their way. They'd stop every few feet and stretch up for another look. They seemed to be having alot of fun hanging with each other.

I fear snakes more than I fear chameleons. I hate hiking in Cali and the Southwest because I often come across rattlesnakes. Weird how in areas frequented by humans (i.e. Anasazi ruins outside Santa Fe) there are signs casually reminding you not to mess with them.
KOK, I was named for my grandmother Catherine.
Your ATV story is endearing and your love for your grandma is palpable, so I don't mind reminding a young man with dashing looks (errr....that would be you) of his grandmother. I'll take it as a compliment.
Besides, I do all the kid-friendly things I bet she did -- bake cookies and make homemade Play-Doh and tie shoelaces and wipe noses and tickle and sing silly songs.
I also blast Frank at loud volumes, which I'm guessing your nana didn't.

Oh yes she did. At 78 rpm mind you.
I was thinking about that Big Wheel story last night, I think it was more like four miles.

KOK, childhood stories can be epic, informative and formative. Keep thinking about the Big Wheel story. Meanwhile, I'm gonna kick my heels off, get real comfortable and listen to some of that other Frank, the one from Hoboken. Puts me in the mood for a martini.
