I have the 4 hour version of Lynchs Dune on VHS. It's a bit better than the shorter version although the sound and video quality aren't the best on this old VHS. Lynchs version was definately better than the mini series but I think Dune is still far from being realized correctly as a film.

My wife got me a graphic novel for my birthday back in August, it's called "Auschwitz." Although it is not written by an actual survivor of the Holocaust, the author, Pascal Croci, was especially interested in that time period and the appearance of the comic reflects that. (I hope to be as authentic in my own current endeavor, which takes place in 1920's Chicago...) It's very good; I'd recommend it to anyone interested in any aspect of World War II.
I have really been turned on to some of the concepts behind the Vertigo Comics line recently...(Sandman, Preacher, John Constantine: Hellblazer, etc...) for a creator it's a breath of fresh air. You aren't confined to telling the story of what happens to one group or individual, as you would be writing X-Men or JLA, but are free to explore different themes and ideas that go clunking about in your head for awhile utilizing the same characters. (Think Cerebus. That series went from a simple tale about a sword-weilding aardvark to an introspective journey into the mind of Dave Sim...) Close behind Vertigo comes Dark Horse, for it's disparate line of themes in its comic books. Yes, they do alot of merchandising (most of the Predator, Aliens, Star Wars, Conan comic books are published by Dark Horse) but they also have a wide variety of comics available. Man I hope to call one of those places my employer one day. Better yet I'd like to have my own production company.
Anyone here read any Valiant comics when they were out? (Dr. Solar, Man of the Atom; X-O Manowar; Shadowman; Turok, Son of Stone, etc...?) I read them intermittently before the company went under.

I've been out of the comic/graphic novel loop for a while now. Being a student means funds are not plenty. This makes me sad.
And Calvin and Hobbes!!! Does anyone actually not love them? If they don't they cannot be human...

One of the small, irritating quirks that I constantly find myself having is how Calvin is used as a symbol on redneck's trucks. First, there was a sticker of Calvin pissing on a Chevy logo, and vice-versa with Ford. Then, there were stickers of Calvin pissing or otherwise defiling any entity in the universe which the driver of the truck didn't like. Now you have Calvin kneeling under a cross in prayer.(!)
It boggles me how this character got so bastardized here in the U.S. I mean, come on. A cross?! What did Calvin and Hobbes EVER have to do with religion or Christianity?

I don't know about all American's being retards but enough of us are that i'm beginning to think that it wasn't just Floride the government put in the water supply. The Peeing Calvin is one of the few things that really piss me off (OK that may be overstating it, but i do think it's unfortunate) because it turns Calvin from being a boy with an overactive imagination, to vandalizing monster. Calvin wouldn't go around peeing on on anything, that would be Biff (i think that's his name, the big bully kid). Calvin got into trouble because his imagination got away from him, not out of maliciousness.
Anyway back on track to what comics i like.
Fables (a Vertigo book by Bill Willingham) that takes fairy tale characters (Snow White, Big Bad Wolf, King Cole, Little Boy Blue to name a few) and exiles them in the United States. A great adult read with lots of intregue, mystery and action.
Daredevil (Marvel) Don't let the Crappy Ben Affleck movie dissuade you, this is one of the Best Hero Books out there.
JSA (DC) a great team book, with a lot of histery to it's golden age characters
Starman (DC) James Robinson & Tony Harris created what i believe is the best Superhero book ever to be written. It is almost totally available in trade paperback now. While it is a Superhero book, it is really a book about Fathers and Sons, and the legacy of Family. If you only have one comic to read, this is the one. |

I've seen bumper stickers in Ireland of Calvin peeing on crests of English football clubs. Stupidity knows no national boundaries.
