I suppose most of you are familiar with this but I thought we might like to see one view of Bush's popular vote majority. Much more striking than the red state/blue state map, and more telling. Small town & rural vs. big city, of course. Is this a divided nation or what?

Square miles of counties won:

Bush 3.28 million

Kerry 741,000

Population (2003) of counties won:

Bush 150.9 million

Kerry 103.6 million

Note: County election data is not reported for Alaska,

Source: the Associated Press, ESRI Inc. USATODAY analysis by Paul Overberg.

link to this and similar 2000 map:

Yeah, I saw that. Pretty amazing.

It's so close number wise -

Bush 150.9 million

Kerry 103.6 million

I can see (I think) two states where there's no blue at all... Which are these? (I apologise for my mid-western geography) Is there any more?

Nebraska (the one further north), and Oklahoma.

edit: With 1 blue county in Kansas between them.

Technically, that's not another view of "Bush's popular vote majority". The only view of that is:

Bush 59,254,033 51%
Kerry 55,724,625 48%

Here's a couple of facts to counteract the notion that Bush got a mandate:

Tuesday was the largest number of people who have ever voted AGAINST a president. As well as the most to vote for a president (as stated earlier by Dallas).

Assuming Bush gets New Mexico and Iowa, he will have gotten the lowest percentage of electoral votes (54%) of any incumbent running for reelection since Wilson.

Yes, it is a nation divided.

Here's another one which I don't find nearly as pretty. ;) [and now I've widened the screen. sorry.]

http://www.princeton.edu/%7Ervdb/JAVA/election2004/

Using County-by-County election return data from USA Today together with County boundary data from the US Census' Tiger database we produced the following graphic depicting the results. Of course, blue is for the democrats, red is for the republicans, and green is for all other. Each county's color is a mix of these three color components in proportion to the results for that county.

Counties shown in black represent either missing election data or a mismatch between the US Census data and the USA Today data. For example, the New England states' election return data is given for each municipality and/or district rather than for each county. Hence, it couldn't be easily matched with the county boundaries.

That's pretty cool. I like purdy colours.
Were there any third party victories at all?
Sometimes in the UK we'll elect someone from outside the major political parties, very often single-issue independent candidates - although these will only be in one location.

Of course, I think the US system is alot more polarised - we can safely bet on at least six or seven different parties in parliament.

What a surprise. Utah a red state? Well, I never! :)

It never ceases to amaze me how well versed our friends across the sea are in North American life/geography/etc. Or at least American. I wonder how we would fare if we started talking Canadian politics/geography here... :)

Utah the reddest, and Massachusetts the bluest. Funny how they noted Washington, D.C. Must be where the drain is.

That is a small comfort to me. I was born in VT and now I live in MA. I think my blood is truly blue! (well, I KNOW it is. Oh, whatever).

did you see that chart of average state IQ to presidental vote. The whole top of the list (above 100IQ) is blue, and the entire bottom (down to 85) is red. I'm not sure how scientific that is but there was a similar one for the 2000 election, so they are coming from somewhere.

There are DEMOCRATS in Kansas? Time for the others to get out their pitchforks and drive them back to Massachusetts! Eh, never mind, the next tornado will take care of them anyway.

Why are the Republicans red, anyway? Doesn't red mean communism, which the Republicans think is the most horribly evil thing ever, next to gay people?

As for the IQ thing, well, I do think voting for Bush is pretty dumb, but so is using IQ as a measure of intelligence. The ability to work out logic puzzles isn't exactly what you need to be an informed voter.

George Bush got 18 votes per square mile, while Kerry got 75. I'd say from analyzing the data that the Democrats are more efficient. No who would you rather have managing the federal budget?

A Sky News map during the election gave the simple, obvious view;blue on the coastlines and red for the midwest/south. But of course a high percentage of people voted for Kerry everywhere. Not high enough, obviously.

If Connecticut are so smart how come they pronounce it Conneticut?

But whenever, as scholars sometimes do, I turned my back on books, declaring them to be the graveyards of the language, and sought contact with the simple folk, I encountered the little cannibals who lived in our building, and after brief association with them, felt very glad to get back to my reading in one piece.
