Hey Erebus,
I wanted to email you but your details are not on the members page. I couldn't also email you in the 'Ban Erebus' thread because it was.... banned (and quite rightly so). So I thought that I would dedicate a thread to you.
Just to say that I have alot of respect for you, you put across your views (strange as they may be) in a non agressive way, which is good for the forum. Its good that we have people here who have very different opinions, otherwise this place would get very boring and repetitive. It is also good that you maintain a non agressive attitude when you get alot of stick for your views. I strongly disagree with the post that was banned, there was no need for it.
I hope this doesn't sound patronizing, as it is not meant to be in any way. I enjoy my arguments with you, and look forward to having a clash of opinions with you every now and then.

Gee Stuart, you really take me by surprise here. Thank you for all the kind words and for simply taking the time. Lately I have been trying to be a better citizen, but at the same time I feel a little guilty over your sentiments because it's easy for me to think of times when I've hardly been civil. Just a few months ago Tre and I got off to a rocky start. That ban thread didn't bother me but at the same time I know CoF has to look at the larger picture. Thanks also for welcoming the diversity of opinion. Like you and quite a few of us I'm obviously animated by political and social discussions, while at the same time aware I frequently come at things differently, so much so that I can't help posting self-consciously. I would think something like that is true of others here as well. I'll try to remain constructive. You don't sound patronizing at all, though I really am a shy person and tend to get embarassed by attention, all the while craving it, at least at times. I too enjoy the arguments and applaud the way you and others stick to your principles. We got some good folks here. As for you Tre, well what can I say? ;) This forehead thing: my guess is that's about my habit of running it into the wall over and over, apparently without learning a thing. Is that close? What's the point of having a massive frontal lobe if you don't have the skull to match? OK, I've blushed enough. Thanks Stuart. Makes my day.

haha it's more to do with you having a strop when I was concerned over darwin's frown lines "what about my frown lines - I have a face too - no one ever cares about my face" you did cry whilst tussling over issues of a draft with the afore mentioned darwin *at the very same time* FB was granting an audience, my concern has stemmed since then, I promised I would care about your frown lines and most dutifully I have....
right, back to my stupid essay :(

Thanks Dave. I remember you saying something like that some months back. Appreciate your consistent fair-mindedness.
The name. A couple of years ago I happened upon it in the dictionary and was taken with the definition: "a personification of darkness in Greek mythology". Pretty juvenile but there you go. Only later was I reminded via Google of that mountain in Antarctica. There's also the ill-fated British voyage of exploration, for the Northwest Passage I think, and apparently there have been a couple rock bands with the name, probably death metal or something similarly hideous. |

Erebus was also the cause of the largest loss in life in the history of New Zealand aviation.
in 1979 (i think) a jetliner crashed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica while on a sight seeing trip.
around 250 people were killed.

Ahh - thanks Erebus. I'm reading Kim Stanley Robinson's _Antarctica_ and Erebus is mentioned a lot in it - it's a massive peake there.
Neat book too, if you're curious about the continent.
