NY indie darlings like to steal.. After Strokes did it in "Is This It", Interpol also do it in "Public Pervert", and I guess if they know more songs by the Pixies they would have zero original material..

pardon. the song "Not Even Jail" from Antics, and it is very much like the riff in Where Is Mind, especilly in the end, there it's nearly a plagiat |

to be fair to interpol, that along with the rest of that album, is amazing, and there is only a small section of that song, that does has a riff simmilar to Where is my mind?
its fairly hard to draw any comparisions between interpol and the pixies

How about that Interpol song Obstacle 2 which sounds at first like By the Way by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, then it sounds more like Marquee Moon from Television, and throughout the song it sounds as if the singer is about to break into Is She Weird by the Pixies.

I totally agree. really. it is an amazing album. and because it's fairly hard to draw any comparisions to the pixies, it took me by surprise to find this simmilarty. interpol do hear alot of music in seems, therfore one can find nearly musical quotes, and alot of reminders of great music of the past, in spirit |

Cindy lou is right on the chord progression, I've heard a few songs that have the same progression as "Where Is My Mind?", including Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" (though it is in a different order they still use the same chords) which is also a really good song. Just thought you'd all like to hear my input, hehe.

Interpol is a complete and total rip-off of Joy Division. And a horribly executed rip-off at that.
In my humble opinion, of course. |

rip-off they may be, but i would argue that they are a well-executed rip-off. if you're going to be a rip off, you may as well do it right.
i'm not even that into them, but they were superb in concert. i will say that.

Interpol is a bad mix of Joy Division and the Smith, The Hives is a bad mix of the Stooges and shit, The Vines is worse than Nirvana, Placebo is the most ridiculous band after Kiss and Oasis, Franz Ferdinand is a bad mix of the Talking Heads and the Talking Heads, all those bands are noisy born dead... I'm about to see the Libertines in concert, I'll tell you what mix it is...

thats shit
the libertines, are the most over hiped, tunless band ive ever heard, ohhh and they are so great, because they take drugs and have band problems, and don't brush thier teeth before they go to bed.
interpol do have a joy division, not but with more or a listen, they arn't copying anything.
maybe this is a descusion for the interpol boards!

I think Interpol are a good band but they do steal heavily off of Joy Division. I love Antics though, great album.

Sound alot like Joy Division, however Joy Divisions records are always on high rotation. For some reason I only listened to Antics for about two weeks then forgot about it.

I saw the Libertnes, live in Paris. Big expectation from the public (very young). This is clean punk-rock with flegmatic bass-player and black drummer. A mix between Joe Strummer and something else. I will forget it in a couple of days... The only thing I enjoyed and found really fun was all those male teenagers getting on stage to kiss the singer and get almost undressed for him... Strange appeal those new bands...

I bought the first Interpol album recently on a whim, and I actually really liked it. Yeah, there's a lot of Joy Division in there, but then lots of good bands have strong influences. I imagine we wouldn't be discussing the point if every band in the sixties hadn't ripped off Chuck Berry. There was a period where every new band that came out was lame, modish and overhyped - The Rapture/!!! scene springs to mind - but at the moment there's a few pretty high-quality new bands around. The Libertines rip off the Clash, but they also write good songs and have a discernable character, at the very least. Franz Ferdinand take off Talking Heads and many others, and do it with aplomb. I even like the Killers - catchy songs, its a bit of fun.

Yes but my... It is so obviously obvious... It is a "foutage de gueule" (en français dans le texte). And we are in 2004, "we have the technology (not available before..." hope someone would get it...)culture is supposed to be accessible to everyone (so accessible that it becomes less and less valuable...) we have perspectives in matter of anticipation and this is what we get: the strokes... Isn't it nonsense my dear fellow? Those bands I denounce belong to my generation, are fond of the bands I love and they pay tribute to them, Okay! (the devil says) but this is not rock'n roll...This is Saturday Night Party!!! I play music, I want it to be my whole life, but as far as I am only able to ripp-off the Stooges, I will not go on stage, I will not publish albums, I won't let it call Rock Music. No, what is happening now is Saturday Night Party and the kids are told this is rock'n roll and that it is 'cool'. I'll tell U what!! (I'm angry) If rock has died, it was fourteen, ugly and lost in a "game over" world of no-future whatever (Punks suck!!)and everlasting easy-phantasy dreams... Gimme my T-Rex back! Vote for me.
Who Cares (but my banker) Wouaaaa!

Um, OK.
I like these bands not because they sound like other bands, but because they're good.

I too felt some of Interpol's sounds were a bit "unoriginal" but what they've done as a whole shows promise, and rekindles some sounds that other bands had all but abandoned. I am eager to see if it can go anywhere else, though I still enjoy what they've made to date.

I was listening to Sugar - Copper Blue for the first time yesterday, and there is one song which is without a shadow of a doubt nicks the riff from Debaser.... Don't know what the song is called but will listen to it again and find out its name.

The song is probably A Good Idea. Bob Mould says it's a thank you to the Pixies.

I just get annoyed when these old great bands who were largely original in their style get repackaged by some nitwits too proud to call themselves a cover band and resold as "new" to the unaware masses. I think it's dirty filthy nasty lazy shit. And I hate it.

You know I think I remember in some interview FB stating something like, the trouble he has with most of the new bands these days is that they aren't being themselves. They are trying to hard for an image or persona. They aren't themselves. I must agree, or at least that is the why many of them come off. Although one could argue that in many ways it is the state of things. It seems so much of it is about the package and the show.
That is why I love the Pixies so much. Look at them! They are so...for lack of a better word...average. They were about the music and that was it, and they didn't give a shit. Imagine what they would have been like if they were all dolled up in matching V-neck sweaters, and walking onto the stage like the Hives. |

Yeah, this whole 80's New Wave retro thing is pissing me off. Not only the look but the songs, even if some of them are catchy. Everyone is trying to sound like music from Donnie Darko.
Signature's are kind of like bumper stickers, only less sticky. |

Absolutely agree. The Joy Division comparison is pretty much down to the Ian Curtis like singing style. Musically I would say that they much closer to the dense swirling guitar sound of the Chameleons.
Excellent combination though! I love the first Interpol album and have just ordered the new one. They're one of the few 'new' bands that I actually like. Libertines, Strokes, Hives = dull.

I know what you mean Richard. I didn't expect to like them but I was happily proved wrong. I just got the new album, and its pretty decent. Most of it as actually clearer and more defined than the moodier tracks from 'Turn On The Bright Lights' (NYC etc.) There's still a Joy Division thing going on, and I kind of see what you mean about the Pixies, but I wouldn't go so far as to say its a rip-off.
