Hurrah, I was starting to think I was the only one who was BORED by the libertines, I fucking hate them I want to punch Doherty and I'm sick of hearing he hasn't turned up to a gig, he's arrested. he's gone into rehab, he's a waster idiot smackhead, the band have dropped him the band love him, they won't tour with him, they're all friends again, it's as boring as Nicholls being nuts. Rock and Roll should turn in its fucking grave.
Haven't heard interpol yet to be honest with you, I'm finding a lot of new music a trial.

I think its really hard to define "stealing" and "ripping-off" in the music world. A person who has never heard any song using E-C#m-G#-A could very well pick up a guitar and "write" that progression. In my 3rd month of playing, I "wrote" a progression- Dm-A-G-C, and it took me like a month to realize that this was actually the progression to Bone Machine. It was just a natural, basic progression that I found. Where is my Mind is a little less basic, but if you mess with barchords randomly for a couple weeks, you'll get that riff.
So Im headed for the stereo store, to get a white noise maker, and turn it up to ten. |

biff, the majority of alternative bands out there today are pixies influenced, specially the weez. strange bickering like this would occur in a pixies forum, seeing as the pixies kinda retaught the world that overworrying about complexity and patterns gets in the way of making soulful music |

I like the two Interpol Discs quite a bit. I'll take a second generation Joy Division any day over the fourth, fifth, and sixth-generation Knacks and Clashes and Pearl Jams that have driven me away from music radio... I this is the the difference between a "ripoff" and the genuine article: Interpol has caused me to dig out my Joy Division CDs again, while most of what I hear on the radio makes me want to take the one Pearl Jam disc I do own and use it as a beer coaster. I think many of us have just experienced the fruits of a band doing right by their influences... Would there be enough Pixies fans to mount such a massive and successful tour 13 years after "Trompe Le Monde" if Kurt Cobain didn't basically teach himself how to write songs by listening to "Surfer Rosa" and then telling the whole world to go listen to the Pixies after his band went huge? I'd like to think so, but I'm not so sure... |

Couldn't find the "bands that siund like pixies" thread. So this one will do.
Just heard the new track from Metric - Monster Hospital - Jesus that track could have been from Surfer Rosa. Just everything about it is so early Pixies. The chord progression, Joey-style guitar licks, metronome drumming, tempo, Vamos-style middle-section. Good track too! |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Emily has some Pixies influence. If you manage to get a hold of their debut, which they've all but disowned, and listen to Dead Disco, it's pretty much Tame.
Their first album is still my favourite, though the new one isn't too bad... Old World Underground is kinda' so-so.

Yeah I listened to the song. Definitely Pixies influenced, and I wouldn't call it a ripoff. Songs not bad, kinda catchy. |

Me too, but I don't hear any connection to Pixies in Dead Disco or Monster Hospital. Maybe I'm just stupid.
Still hooked on cellophane... |

Interpol sounds pretty good to me. They sound like a crisper Joy Division. Don't get me wrong. I love Joy Division. however, I can see why Interpol sells records. They sound like Joy Division cleaned up and more modern. I don't think they rip people off any more than than the next artist. After all, how easy is it to make something new in 2007?
I've heard a lot of noise, so I'm going to the stereo store, to get a white noise maker and turn it up to ten. |

i see a lot of similarity for the riff in "is this it" but i dont think its a rip off...the strokes songs are all like that (cept for their new horrible album) it doesnt really mean its a rip off its, its very different- similar key and tempo but different- joey still makes me tingle with that lead every time i hear it, its got way more power.

i agree - i don't get that impression from either tune. in fact, dead disco couldn't be less like tame.

I'm sure the Pixies weren't the first to use that chord progression, I think Jarvis Cocker and End of Fashion use it on their latest releases off the top of my head, who cares, everyone borrows shit whether they mean to or not. I really dig Interpol, they aren't as dark as Joy Division, they're less punk rock, anyone who hadn't heard either band could instantly tell them apart. Everyones influenced by something, let it go.
