I just watched this movie again last night. The last time I watched it was in school, and when I was a kid I thought it was really good. I understood all the points it tried to make, and I felt real bad about them killing Piggy. But when I watched it again, something struck me. The characters of Ralph (the noble one) and Jack (leader of the 'Hunters') are much like the political situation in America today. (Well, it's never really changed, and can apply to any country, at any time in human history.) Jack uses fear mongering to convice the boys they need to have weapons and seperate from those that don't subsribe to his ways. He hates the "rules" and wants to hunt and have fun. So he sets up his tribe, uses fear of his power and the "monster" to keep everyone in line, and imposes Army like rules and discipline. He lures them with promises of cooked meat and having fun all day. He also attacks the members of the other tribe, those that decided to stay with Ralph. They live simply, never have weapons, and beleive they will be rescued.
Sorry to go about the film so much, but it's just that Jack seemed so much like George Bush to me, I was really dumbstruck. There's an enemy. We must defend ourselves. We must attack before we are attacked. Etc. Perhaps the two boys or tribes represent extremes, neither one being totally realistic or real, but surely more than 50% of the American populace can see things like "Homeland Security" for what it is?
PS I'm not saying I think Ralph is John Kerry. I have no great love for the DNC, either. |

yes it can represent a lot of things. political situations are one of them.

| Ya, we read it in school and then watched it. I don't remember the book at all. I remember liking it, but I could just be remembering the movie. |

speedy m, when you watched this at school did you not then discuss all this too? that's why we read and watch it in school i thought. great book and film (the orig)... loved the documentary about the blokes going back to the island! a horrible experience for quite a few of them...

Never saw the movie, but a great and classic book. I did, however, see the Simpsons episode.

As is the case too often, the best film version is the original. Can't beat the book, though.

never seen the film loved the book
(wasn't made to read it at school, I loathe all books I was made to read at school, JB Priestly can kiss big ones as far as I am concerned)
