Her records are complete hoaxes. They are buffed and shined and Pro-Tooled and pitch-transposed in post-production so much that it's a joke to call what she does "punk" - let alone "alternative rock."
It's as mainstream and big-business and corporate and Tiger Beat as it comes. It's just that, unlike most do-what-they're tolds, she can't be counted on not to fuck up in front of the cameras when the time is right.
If, in fact, Courtney has never used pre-recorded backing tracks in concert (and, as someone who has crewed a lot of major shows, I think it's entirely reasonable to assume that she has) I feel certain the only reason for that is because she got so high/drunk/angry/delirious that she forgot how to turn them on, or wound up beaning her soundman in the head with a cinderblock-filled tampon (or some such nasty projectile) 10 minutes before the show.
Based on some bootlegs I've heard, there are plenty of Courtney Love audience members that would probably have paid extra to see her use backing tracks so their hotly anticipated concert experience wouldn't have sounded like deep-fried ass.
Sorry.

Hahaha, well I only included Courtney on the list because she's Ashlee Simpson's hero/role model. She said she wanted her album to sound just like "Celebrity Skin." In fact, I believe she talked about her during both episodes of her show I sat through. The first two Hole albums weren't very shiny. Pretty on the Inside was certainly not slammed through Pro Tools. I think we can always count on Courtney to sing loudly and out of tune no matter how bad her throat feels and how awful it sounds. I'd rather watch her cough up blood for an hour than lip synch and hop around like a dumbass.

I have to agree with Ebb. Brown baggable, yes. Attractive, no.
Acid reflux can affect your voice, but I don't think to the point of not being able to perform at all. It'll just make it a bit raspier. Take some pills, drink Alka-Seltzer and fucking sing horse face. I know people who've gotten injections in their throats while on tour so they could perform.
I doubt the drummer was controlling "the machine". He might start the click off, but if he was running the computer with her voice on it, then they're dumb as dirt. Why didn't they cue the song up during commercial and double check it? I think someone at SNL was taking a piss.

Where's that guy from Family Guy who is incredibly upset when Peter pretends to play the keyboard but it's just the demo button?

Ebb's right in a way, though.
Family Guy is very hit or miss. Mostly miss. There are only a couple laugh-out-loud instances throughout it.
The Simpsons, on the other hand...consistently funny for a very long time.
As for the other "Simpsons" (Ashlee and Jessica)...they blow. I'm glad that happened on a live show for all to see and make fun of. It doesn't matter either way, though, since they're both going to hell when they die for their crimes against humanity.

futurama was a breath of fresh air after the simpsons got a bit stale, though. |

I've tried to enjoy Futarama but the pacing is not there. Comedy is 90% timing, and that's something Family Guy takes all the way to the band. Futarama is funny in a more cerebral way, but that doesn't make if more funny.
Anyone that doesn't think Family Guy is funny is probably dead inside. No offense.

Even the old SNL botch-ups on stage were great. Anyone remember Elvis Costello cutting off Less than Zero and suddenly breaking into Radio Radio? That was truly awesome (hell he even busted off the stage in anger at the end). Devo was on there dancing like robots, that rocked too. Bring back those days!

No, the people who are already dead inside are strippers.
It's not that it's not funny...It's just not nearly as funny compared to The Simpsons. I'll admit that when I first started watching Family Guy I thought it was the funniest thing. Then it got really old, really fast. I can't laugh at the re-runs of Family Guy like I can The Simpsons. I still watch it, though, because there's nothing else worthwhile at 2:00 in the morning that wasn't on at 11 on other channels. (You know the whole cycle thing on Discovery, Court, History, and Learning Channels..)
But again - it's all hit or miss. The casual humor in it is just "good" at best, not at all great.
Gah, I feel really bad for swerving the topic of this thread. Get back to how much Ashlee Simpson sucks now. Either I or someone else should start a thread about the comedy cartoons.

I am sorry, but Courtney Love maybe a media whore, a publicity princess or whatever else, but in no way what so ever is she to be compared to Ashlee fucking simpson! She will with out doubt always perform, unaided. yes, as julian cope once told her when she said she had started a bad she is 'the worst guitarist ive ever heard'. She can however sing. In rare moments when she lets her guard down, she can actually sing. seems to prefer screaming, but still. Its about the passion she brings to the music. she has a certain style that many have tried to copy, but can not. Unlike ashlee simpson.

i think courtney love is worse! she's been riding the coattails of a deadman for 10 years now and only pretends to be the punk she is. even if ashlee simpsons claims that she's punk rock, the truth is easy to see - she has an mtv reality show. ditto for avril lavigne.
courtney love plays it up like she's this punk rock princess and wears no underwear onstage and throws mic stands at people to try and play up the image. however, her records are absolutely manufactured and she is the media whore of the worst type. she's the reason that this nirvana box set is almost 3 years late in being released, and why "you know you're right" was, to quote Pitchfork, "ended up making its debut in 2002 as the only rare track on the 2003 anthology Nirvana. So, like, you don't own it, but your 13-year-old neighbor does. Is that fair? Hell no."
Love is THE worst.

There are far worse woment than Ms Love out there.
Sure, shes a complete psycho, shes a bitch, I totally get why people dislike her. I dislike a lot of things about her, but I also totally admire many things.
The whole 'riding off the coat tails of a dead man' is such an easy thing to say. Are you gonna prosecute the woman for falling in love with someone who ended up being the biggest rock star of our time? Not really a choice, i think you will find. And if it was, Kurt was not stupid. Everyone seems to under estimate him, and way over estimate her. She does not have super powers, she can not make people fall in love with her, and want to bring her child in to the world. |Kurt had his own mind, and was smart enough to figure out just how much of a bitch she is.
Also, alot of bad press has followed her around from a long time ago. Move on people. Sure shes been a bit of an idiot recently, but hardly surprising. anniversary year kurts death, new record et al.
If you lost some one you were in love with, your husband, father of your child, your soul mate, you would want some things to be just yours, that he left behind, right?
Everything about Kurt is public property, even down to his f****** journals! its sick. she wanted to keep just one little thing. Maybe kurt had said he didnt want these songs released? who knows, only she does really. But it is being released. And, she does not take any of Kurts money. anything to do with Nirvana goes straight in to an account for frances.
Its so easy to hate Courtney, sometimes its pure laziness that spurs people to make abusive coments towards her. its easier to be nasty than nice.

You got to give Courtney credit for making something out of nothing. She's like Madonna in a lot of ways. She can't sing to save her life, but somehow she gets into a position to be sucessful. Courtney's a better actor though.
As for Family Guy - Futurama, I can understand both arguements. I think Futurama is too slow paced at times, but I also think Family Guy is too forced. The constant flashbacks are such a cheap way to squeeze in jokes. They could write hundreds of those flashbacks in bulk and plug them in to any show at any time.
Neither of them gets the timing down as perfect as The Simpsons in its heyday. Family Guy definitely has its moments, but Futurama has much more substance and meat to it. Granted, Futurama got way too sappy and character driven in season four, but season three is outstanding. The Poppler and Planet Amazonia episodes rank with the best Simpsons episodes any day.
BTW - did anyone see Ashlee on the Radio Music Awards? Just curious...

I'll take Family Guy over Futurama, and I'll take Sealab 2021 over Family Guy. But I don't even really like cartoons. Simpsons shall always reign supreme as far as I'm concerned, as long as we're talking about pre-2000 episodes. It went WAY downhill in 2000 and has just continued to fall since. Well, I haven't really even watched new episodes in a few years, so I can't say for sure.

The guy's number one point against Family Guy:
1. Plenty of other animated shows that went off the air didn't get anywhere near the same kind of following, and certainly didn't get revived. Futurama, of course, was far better; but so was Pinky and the Brain when it was in primetime; so was Duckman, which was the offensive, shocking show that Family Guy never had the guts to be (and Duckman's "Road To" episode was a million times better than Family Guy's). Even The Critic, which had some of the same problems as FG (bad animation, unmemorable characters, over-reliance on pop-culture references as opposed to genuine satire or parody), displayed a higher level of craftsmanship. Essentially Family Guy is a story of poor craftsmanship rewarded. I can't help but resent that.
So, essentially he admits to being a hero for counter-culture and disliking the show primarily because he resents it being more popular than, say, Futarama.
I'm not going to say I disagree that the flashback comedy is perhaps abused (though inevitably still amusing). I'm not going to say that the show is funny in the way that Seinfeld or The Simpsons is funny. It's simply a show that revels in the completely ridiculous. A 3 minute fight scene with a man-sized chicken because it gave him an expired coupon. William Shatner levitating for the briefest of seconds. An old woman walking almost painfully slowly towards a puddle of urine and then instantaneously and impossibly landing face down.
There are an awful lot of references in Family Guy, and one of the only things I agree with the author of that blog on is that I don't know how they will stand the test of time. Peter painting with <can't remember his name> that guy that paints 'happy little bushes' in the corner, who then threatens to kill anyone that tells people about the bush (which is supposed to be our little secret) is funny without having ever seen his show. Peter's complaint that his painting looks nothing like it and it being the family from Family Ties is funny to me, but would it be funny if I didn't get the reference? I don't know.
If you don't think comedy has a timing element, you're out to lunch. Millions of Family Guy fans prove that.
All the above said, I'm not saying that Family Guy is the same kind of comedy as The Simpsons, or Seinfeld, or numerous other better written shows. I'm not comparing which is more funny, they're too different. I'm just saying that to not think the show is funny, even if only at a gut level, even if you admit that the plot/characters are not incredible, means you have no soul.
I've not watched enough Futarama to qualify as a fair judge of the show, but I wanted to like it. Matt Groening. New sitcom. What else could I want? But as much as I tried, the two or three episodes I saw only hinted at amusement. Recommend me an episode that is funny, maybe I've only seen poor ones. But they were poor.

This thread has become an amalgamation of so many topics. When choosing to answer it, you have to take into consideration:
-- ashlee simpson's debacle onstage -- simpsons vs family guy vs futurama -- courtney love - hoebag or misunderstood recipient of bad publicity? -- what is the definition of "snafu"?
I think this whole thread should be scooped up, whirled around, and plopped down into the "random post all you want" topic, or else some serious re-railment is in order.
What could be better than a swan dive into the asphalt?
