Addenum: If you're going to suck at even lipsynching, you should not perform live for fear of bring the corporate music scheme down for all the others milking their looks for money.

can you believe she actually tried to blame her band at the end of the episode (during the "hugs" segment)? i'm sorry, but what a bitch. They basically started playing right along to whatever the SNL-sound people cued up...a.ka. her lip-synching vocal track! Its apparent she has no musical integrity, at least try to have some personal integrity by being accountable for your embarassing actions rather than trying to pin it on three guys who can actually play instruments and create live music in your crappy "band" |

That was hard to watch. Though only marginally harder than watching an Ashlee Simpson performance where nothing goes wrong.
Remember when SNL used to have cool musical guests? Or did they always have 'pop'ular acts on, but pop music just used to be better? |

| I'm sure her press people have better spin doctors than the Repulican and Democratic party put together. Besides, what do the 10-15 year olds who buy this crap care if she sings on stage or not? It's not like people in pop music circles will suddenly be shocked that people lip sync. Elton John calling out Madonna, blah blah blah. The whole thing is stupid. The entire industry is a farce, some sort of facsimilie of real music. Then someone is rumored to lip sync on stage and there's controversy. What bullshit. |

I happened to walk in the room just in time to see this.
I love that she was exposed. But, SNL is just as exposed, either you have a live show or not and the booker should tell all the acts no backup tracks unless your DJ is on stage (for the rap acts).
This SHOULD be a milli-vanilli level controversy, but, then again, why pummel this girl when Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Brittany Spears, Madonna et al have already made a mint doing it? |

I hear Geffen issued a statement blaming it on SNL, saying the backing vocals weren't supposed to be used at all and that the SNL sound guy was to blame. Uh, yeah. Ok.
I've also heard her parents claim that her voice was acting up so the backing vocals were a last minute thing so that she can sing tonight at some awards show. Uh, yeah. Ok.
My niece, who is 8, loves Ashlee Simpson. I was forced to sit through a few episodes of the MTV reality thing with her. In them, Ashlee insisted that she didn't sing pop music like her sister, but that she was a punk rocker. She appeared to be serious. I certainly can't imagine Louise Post or Kathleen Hanna or even Courtney Love going to backing tracks when they're having a bad day. The sad state of female "rock" nowadays.

I must say that the reference to Courtney Love was out of place in that lineup.
Courtney is one of the biggest pre-fab, scene-hopping hacks in the business. People seem to cut her some kind of slack since she obviousl still fries her brain cells, but that doesn't imply legitimacy to me, it implies stupidity and selfish behavior on the part of a despicably absent mother.

If, in fact, Courtney has never used pre-recorded backing tracks in concert (and, as someone who has crewed a lot of major shows, I think it's entirely reasonable to assume that she has) I feel certain the only reason for that is because she got so high/drunk/angry/delirious that she forgot how to turn them on, or wound up beaning her soundman in the head with a cinderblock-filled tampon (or some such nasty projectile) 10 minutes before the show.
Based on some bootlegs I've heard, there are plenty of Courtney Love audience members that would probably have paid extra to see her use backing tracks so their hotly anticipated concert experience wouldn't have sounded like deep-fried ass.

Even U2 uses canned music at shows sometimes. Someone told me they even canned some of Edge's solos during the PopMart tour.
The thing that will burn Ashlee the most is how she reacted to the snafu. 13 year olds may not care about talent, but they do care about being associated with popularity and coolness. Ashlee was awkward and embarassing when the thing went down and acted like an idiot with that hillbilly dance. Over the next few weeks she's going to be hacked to pieces by TV, newspapers, and the internet. 13 year olds are going to start holding her CD at arms length like a loaded diaper.
Should be interesting to see what happens tonight at the Radio Music Awards. She's supposed to perform "live". If she's smart, she'll go out there with an acoustic guitar and try to remedy the situation. Since she's not smart, she'll probably go out and lip synch "Pieces of Me" EXACTLY the same as she did on SNL (the first time). I hope they boo her ass. She's got a serious inferiority complex with her sister who despite having vocal ability is a terrible singer and sells more records by being cute and stupid. They must have some lame ass parents.

well there's a difference between uses canned sounds (which even rush does) and pretending to play or sing along to a recording.
personally i think the former is fine and the latter is dispicable. |

I think I'm going to have to disagree with everyone calling these girls ugly. I don't see that for a second, they're ugly people in some sense but I don't think that it's a physical thing at least.
