I liked "Raising Arizona." Does that count? Tonight we were going to watching "To Have and To Be," a French film about a schoolteacher, but our kid refused to get in the car and go to her sitter's. So no movie for me...

Kusturica is a great director and "Life is a miracle" is a great film. I've seen all his films and he's very very talented. "Arizona dream" is probably his worst film.
My favorite is his second film, I don't know the name in English ("Papa est en voyage d'affaires" in French), that won the Palme d'Or (like "Underground").

I can tell you a lot about him, his musicians, the art scene where he comes from etc....He comes from the city where I was born...there are some very interesting stories about it.
"Black cat white cat" is even better than "Life is a miracle".

What can you tell us about Dr. Nelle Karadjic then? (Sorry if I misspell the name, I'm too lazy to check.)

Jedi, I meant to tell you in another thread that you looked very nice in your photo and shouldn't say you are not as good-looking as those other Frenchmen!
OK. Back on topic on off-topic. Sorry.

It's Dr Nele Karajlic (his true name is Nenad Jankovic).
In the early 80s there was a very active artistic scene in the city of Sarajevo in former Yougoslavia, especially because of a bunch of young guys who called themselves the New Primitives. It was a sort of an intelligent answer to Punk.
It was clear to everyone that communism was about to disappear and there was a huge distorsion between the official propaganda (glorifying Tito and the communist partisans from the WW2) and people who were taking this with a lot of irony.
There was a couple of very good bands, like Zabranjeno Pusenje (=no smoking, whose leader and singer was Nele Karajlic), Elvis J. Kurtovic (they all chose themselves funny names, both "Kurtovic" and "Karajlic" having a strong sexual connotation), or Plavi Orkestar (=blue orchestra, the name was a joke about the communist army orchestra). The guy who played the main role in "No man's land", Branko Djuric, was also a part of this scene.
They were all involved in a cult humoristic TV show called "Top lista nadrealista" which was something like a Mounty Python flying circus, if you will. And some filmmakers, like Kusturica, who had also been playing bass guitar in No Smoking for a while.

Thank you very much Kathryn, but I never said I wasn't as good-looking as them, I only said "Not all Frenchmen are sexy", which you can't deny!
Monsieur, that is truly interesting. Thanks for the insight. I'd like to see some of that TV show... I guess No Smoking was renamed after Kusturica became famous, wasn't it?
One of my favourite jazz musicians (pianist Bojan Zulifkarpasic) was also born in Yugoslavia, but as he's from Belgrade, you might not know about him :)

I wanted to say that they were not trying to copy Punk, like Green Day or something.
And Jedi, I own Solobsession, which is a very good record.
I forgot to mention another band who was coming from provocation against the communist regime in ex-Yougoslavia - it was Laibach, from Slovenia (in a different way though). They are quite famous today.

I finally saw "To Have and to Be" or is it "To Be and to Have"? Anyway...
It has a vague Frank connection. Halfway thru the film I realized that it was taking place in Massif Centrale and I started whooping and hooting, which greatly annoyed my husband, who said it was a stretch to say that the movie was in any way related to Frank. Buzzkiller.
Green Day sucks, btw.

Etre et Avoir - To Be And To Have. I loved that film.
My favorite Kusturica film was Time Of The Gypsies. Certainly his most beautifully filmed work. The English title to "Papa est en voyage d'affaires" is When Father Was Away On Business and I agree with Monsieur that it is a damn fine movie.
