I was 17 and too young to get in the last time they came by so this was a long time coming...they played great, they looked great, and I even got a 7 inch autographed by the band. If they are coming by your town, you must check it out (and by the way, they just released a new album, 'New Roman Times')....has anyone here seen their recent shows?

um....story to share.....Dave Lowry was hanging around Richmond, Va for a while when I lived there. I was having a drink at our local hangout with my friend Willie- we were sitting at a little table across from the bar. Lowry had been sitting at the bar a few feet away. I noticed as we were talking Willie's eyes kept glancing over his way. He got up and left, then Willie darted over to where he had been sitting and picked up something off the floor. She handed it to the bartender and said, "Dave Lowry's knife."

Camper Van Beethoven rock. They've been one of my favorite bands since early on in highschool (which, coincidentally, wasn't too long ago).

I've seen Camper several times and most recently just a few months ago.

They sound as good if not better now than they EVER did.

It's fucking incredible, and I'm not kidding.

Victor has been clean now for years, and his focus is amazing. He's the secret weapon in that band, no doubt.

Lowery is better at turning "the asshole thing" on and off than he used to be, which helps immensely.

Kenny Margoli (keyboardist w/Cracker and formerly w/The SMithereens among others) adds some nice atmospheric touches and plays accordion on a few songs which is a cool touch, as well.

Frank Funaro (formerly w/The Del Lords and currently with Cracker) is the live drummer, since Crispy Derson lives in Australia and can't take time off to tour. Crispy's on the new album, though.

Frank is very good, but in all honesty, you can watch him struggle a bit with the off-rhythm ska and Balkan-type material. It always seems like he's having ahard time keeping up, but in the end, he always pulls it off. As a drummer myself, I know that shit can be wicked hard unless it's simply in your nature to play those grooves, so I sympathize with him.

However, I don't want to imply that Frank's not cutting it. He's rock solid. It's just not the same as hearing Pederson.

Maybe that'll change one day.

However, if you can go see them, DO! I have smiled more and cracked up with sheer pleasure at their shows more often than I've done cumulatively in years.

This is no bullshit cash-in reunion. They're not going through the motions. The band is back and deadly serious about regaining their place in the alt.rock world. They are kicking everybody's ass.

If they went out as the opening act for the Pixies and did an hour-long co-headlining set, it would be the most wonderful pairing I can think of, from a musical and a financial standpoint. I believe those two groups share a lot of fans and goodwill.

I'd much rather see that than The Thrills or some of the other groups that don't seem to have any compelling reason to be there aside form somebody's manager owing somebody else a favor.

That statement does not include cats like Mission of Burma or The Bennies.

Another great opeing act for the Pixies would be the newly reformed Rocket From The Tombs with David Thomas of Pere Ubu, Richard Lloyd from Television and Cheetah Chrome from The Dead Boys...

I saw them early last year, and I was amazed at how good they sounded. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves, and all those old songs sounded fresh. I hope they get back my way soon.

How strange that we'd be discussing Camper earlier today, when I just received this e-mail from on eof the band's representatives. It reminds me of what happened to FB & The C's a few years back.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I just got this message from Jonathan Segel - and confirmed by phone with David Lowery as they were headed down to the police station. Get the word out about all this as fast as possible!

If you have info, email me: john [at] cursion [dot] com

Or better yet - contact the Montreal Policer.

Message from Jonathan:
all of camper van beethoven's guitars and violin and our merch got stolen last night in montreal. if anybody has any contacts up here, tell them to look for our stuff in stores. or hunt down the robbers and kill them.

jonathan's violin with stickers all over it
jonathan's 1971 strat (sunburst) (with a couple stickers, etc.)
victor's 1969 precision bass (natural finish)
david's green charvel surfcaster
david's black jackson surfcaster
a couple ibanez acoustics
johnny's black eric clapton strat
greg's frankenstein strat (black) and tele (tobacco sunbusrst)
(warmoth esp or something)
plus mike duclos' precision bass and ezster balint's gibson sg and danelectro semi acoustic.
maybe more.. not sure yet.
a few tshirts and a road case of cds. including the email list we collected last night, preventing this from going out to montreal fans!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pretty shitty, huh?

Also, it's worth noting that Ezter Balint is the exotic beauty from Jim Jarmusch's "Stranger Than Paradise," who has lately been working on a fringe career in music...

If anybody on this board lives up that way - keep your eyes peeled. Jonathan's violin must be damn near irreplaceable (oh, the stories it could tell).

I've seen them twice now, once last year, and once last week. Both great shows, and they did a mix of both old and new material.

I heard about the band's gear being stolen. I really hope they manage to get it back. I have to wonder what kind of assholes would ever do such a thing.

Man I hope those a holes that stole that stuff get busted. That really sucks.

Thaks for posting the setlist broken face. That's so stellar and that is so cool that they are playing the old tunes too. Very cool... thanks peter radiator... awesome review. I guess it seems like i have seen most of camper van in one incarnation or another either with cracker or the smithereens.

I am so stoked to see this show-- we have only seen the Pixies & Prince this year due to me being out of work so this is going to be a huge treat.

I can't wait and kathryn, if you can fly out here, you can crash here --- there are still tickets my friend!!!! Anyway, thought I would throw that out

Oh, Daisy, you know how I feel about the Twin Cities. I would so love to get out there again. But you also know that I can't right now. That is such a sweet offer. We'd have big fun, too. My college housemate was high school good buds with Dave L. and she turned me on to the band and I'd met them a couple of times. It would definitely be a trip down memory lane to see them again. You are sweet to offer, sweet as always, Daisy.

The Smithereens. Great band, too. One of my husband's favorites. Glad you mentioned them, Daisy. Anybody else like them, too?

"Behind the Wall of Sleep" is one of the most romantic songs, IMHO. Well, "romance as frustration," actually, which is quite accurate in many cases.

David Lowery said that CVB had gained less weight than any other reunited band from around their time. Partially a reference to the Pixies, perhaps?

I just heard the violin/guitar player on CBC, it happened the night of or the night after the Montreal concert (they had a day off). He was told it was a common occurrence in Montreal.

The desk clerk was very interested about when they would be back at the hotel. It was all taken out of the parking lot next to where they were staying.

The lock box with all the keys for the lot had been toppled over, the thieves couldn't find the one for their van, so they broke into the trailer and took what they could carry.

The violin has lots of stickers and felt marker drawings and it would be impossible to fence.

He said the police weren't too interested, they didn't come to the crime scene even though the 71 Strat alone would bump the crime close to grand theft.

The interviewer suggested they were Empty Camper Van Beethoven.

Did FB ever get his prized Telecasters back?

Let me tell any would be thieves, don't mess with a musician's instrument. I will use lethal force to protect my guitar.

Years ago when one of my bands was playing in Athens, Georgia, we phoned ahead to ask the girl at the 40 Watt where she recommended we stay in town for the night.

She sold us on a particular hotel without hesitation.

We called ahead and got rooms. Our van was in no way "band-looking." It had not musician-type stickers, no trailer, etc... We'd stayed plenty of places without any incident.

After the show we headed to the hotel, drove right up to the room door and and loaded our most prized stuff into the room without anyone seeing ('50s strats, sentimental cymbals, etc...).

The next morning, we awoke to find the van had been broken into and ransacked. Everything was gone. A full drum set, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, full Marshal Stack, Ampeg SVT cabinet - a huge amount of heavy gear. There had to have been at least two guys and a truck, and they had to have worked fast as the lot was well-lit and right in the middle of the downtown area.

None of it was ever recovered, and no other cars were touched. We later found out that between 5 and 10 bands's rigs had been ripped off in the same way from this same lot in the preceding year. All of them had played the 40 Watt immediately prior.

It became pretty obvious that there was some sort of collusion between the club and the hotel, or at least between the club and the thieves. From that point on, whenever we played Athens, and some other towns, one of us would sleep in the van, which sucked in the middle of winter.

I too have heard that Montreal is rife with this sort of thing for some reason.

Eszter Balint is opening for them....she is playing with her husband, Mike Duclos...I'd say her performance was like a toned-down PJ Harvey, but with a violin....but pretty unique sounding. She starred in Jarmusch's 'Stranger Than Paradise' as the Hungarian cousin who is obsessed with Screaming Jay Hawkins...she was also in Trees Lounge (for which she also wrote and performed music) as well as a small part in Coffee and Cigarettes. First Ave rocks. I've always wanted to see them there. I'm bummed about Ween's cancellations, as I was very excited to see them finally, but I still get to see Camper and then the Pixies again, so that makes things better.

Hey everyone,

Camper figures that since this was a professional theft, that most of the gear will likely not turn up in local pawn shops or music stores, but may be ditched online or through international dealers.

Since frankblack.net is an international community, and many of us are musicians, I encourage anyone interested to click this link for a complete and detailed listing of what was stolen, along with a few relevant pictures.

Someone on these boards may wind up helping the band get some of this stuff returned. There's also a reward involved.

http://www.campervanbeethoven.com/gearstolen/

Thanks for keeping your eyes peeled.

Jonathan Segal has had that Violin since 1985.......all yer CVB favorites were played on that instrument....I just hope the thieves haven't done what I think they'd do, which is rip off the layers of stickers that are on it. This kinda theft is really f...in bad, really bad....I can only hope that these guys manage to sell a few extra albums from the media coverage of the theft....if you dont have it, get it: www.vanguardrecords.com or www.campervanbeethoven.com
