Frank Black

Frank Black Francis, Cooking Vinyl, £12.99

This double CD interestingly bookends the career to date of Francis Black, known until 1992 as Black Francis, the leader and guitarist with America's pre-grunge indie rock darlings the Pixies. Disc one is a 15-track demo Black knocked off on his own on cassette just prior to recording the Pixies' debut album, Come On Pilgrim, in 1987. Here, in fuzzy close-up, you get all the quirks of Black's songwriting - oddly repeated lyrical phrases and unpredictable chording - minus the intermittent sonic blitzkrieg of Joey Santiago and the rest of the band.

The same turn-it-down principal guides disc two. In 2003 Black met up in London with David Thomas's backing duo, trumpeter Andy Diagram and the strings and electronics specialist Keith Molina to re-work 13 Black compositions, including Pixies favourites such as Velouria and Levitate Me. It's a shame that only four of these appear here. Listening to a horned-up version of The Holiday Song, or an electronically modified Subbaculture alongside Black's stark prototypes makes you realise what strangely subtle craftsmanship lurked beneath the Pixies' howl and clang. Robert Sandall

Wow, I didn't realise that his real name is Francis Black!

What CD was this guy listening to? The second disk is entirely reworked Pixies material!
