I'm repeating a question from another topic.
Ok...tomorrow is pay day and I need to get a new book...and 4 CD's...
So gimme your suggestions, and out of what I end up getting I'll tell you how it went over.

book: great apes, or death and the penguin, or the curious incident of the boy in the night-time (it's a massive book over here already, not sure if it is over there, but the best book i've read in a long time)
cd's: simple kid 'sk1', modest mouse 'good news' (if you don't already have it), the concretes, erm... i don't know. see whatever is in the offers.

wasp factory - good, but disappointing ending imo. was told to expect a twist, a good/shocking one, but in the end it was just "oh yeah, right"
reading the bridge at the moment by banks, haven't got very far so far... but like it so far.

I liked the wasp factory 'cos it made me laugh out loud (and I don't do that often) and I didn't see the twist coming and I did have a jaw drop at it too, I also like the way the book feels, you know that thing where a book takes you to a certain place? I love revisiting that island

fair enough. it did make me laugh i guess. mainly the parts when his mad brother called him whilst on the run. not as much as curious incident of the boy in the night-time though...

(I read the wasp factory on a camping holiday in the lake district, we were in this slopey field and I was curled up on a blanket outside the tent, when I got to the bit where his racist uncle died I laughed so hard I ended up rolling half way down the hill because I couldn't control myself, I got some funny looks, kinda used to that though)

yeah, if i realised it was everywhere and people were raving about it when i got it (well when my gf told me i should read it) i would have said "no way" - but i read it and gradually started to notice the hype around it. and it deserves it. judging by the books you like, esp wasp factory, you'd love this book. such a pretty book too! very funny, and inspiring too.

bumble, considering I'm so stupid though do you think I'd understand the big words? to be honest the hype has put me off reading it so far, but everyone I know who has read it has told me good things (although some of them did that 'you have to read it, it won prizes' thing that people do, which made me want to hit them and not read it)

Ebb, do comics count as books? heh heh, sorry graphic novels all nine would be bloody expensive too, I know they're like Ģ13 each here

I really enjoyed "Neverwhere" (Neil Gaiman) when I read it a few years back.
Haven't read anything very interesting recently. Mostly labor history books.
So, Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere" is my recommendation.

i know i know i thought the bit about vonnegut's illustrations was funny.
my friends love all of gaiman's books but i tried to read 'neverwhere' and i didn't like it. i think his writing style is well suited to graphic novels because the illustrations can fill in a lot of the holes. i think gaiman leaves too many holes in his descriptive text. if i wanted to imagine everything myself i would write my own stories.. :P i'm reading a book because i want to see what the author has to offer.
i've always thought the notion that "the great thing about books is you can use your imagination!" is a pile of shit. |

I dunno though, I hate watching a film before I've read the book because it fucks with how I'll read it, I like my interpretation on things, same as the film very rarely lives up to the book, except maybe Dune, I love them both, although the film pronounced all the words wrong which sucked
I like the sandman books 'cos they're pretty

of course you get to interpret things and filter them more in a book than a film. but no more so than say, music, photography, painting, etc. film is the most explicit medium.
but my point was that a good book does not leave everything to the imagination of the reader. and as i said, the point of reading it is to see what the author's imagination came up with. |

I thought I'd make a list of recent CDs only.
Br Danielson - Brother Is To Son. One of the best Danielson records, with guest appearance by Sufjan Stevens. Reminds me a lot of Brian Wilson's Smile.
Carla Bozulich - Red Headed Stranger. Released last year, and ranked #2 in my top 10, just behind SMYT.
Libertines - s/t. I don't have it actually but I think they're cool.
Joanna Newsom - Milk Eyed Mender. Crazy but with great songwriting.
Book: if you like graphic novels, try I Never Liked You by Chester Brown. It's the only graphic novel that made me cry and the best one I've ever read. If you don't like graphic novels, read it anyway, you'll change your mind.

O.K. maybe it was a bad comparative. Of course there's no point an author leaving everything to the imagination of the individual, you might as well sit on a sofa and day dream. But a good author should be able to take an imagination into hitherto unexplored regions, does that make sense? or am I wittering... er...
I do like books that are explicit in their descriptive text, I mentioned 'dune' before that is one of the most thorough books I have ever read and one of my favourite books too (mega geek) but then books like 'post office' - bukowski are so sprawly and random and poetic and yeah full of holes but the holes are skanky and should only be looked in if you are of strong constitution, umm whats naked lunch, i suppose thats descriptive and skanky, I like books that make me work a bit, that force you to think in different ways entirely.
Which reminds me, I've lost my point entirely, sorry very tired and very ill today
