The book Gigantic: The Story of Frank Black and the "Pixies" by John Mendelssohn is out now in the UK.
Has anyone read it yet ?
I've just ordered it from Amazon (the_book_depository) for £13.63 (inc P&P). |

Ooh that sounds interesting. Does anyone know where I may get a copy?
As for this Frank/Pixies book, well I have been waiting for one for ages so I hope this oen turns out to be worth the wait.

Actually I have just realised that the 'Planet Of Sound' book is not in English. You didn't mention that Devils Islander, you swine.

For free? That's madness, at least read it first. Put it up for auction on here after that, maybe give the money to charity.

Jeez I'm angry
Just flipped through the Mendelssohn book in Books Etc. Now I have to inform all of my friends and relatives not to buy it for me. It stinks. Open at any random page (those that are about the man and his band anyway ignoring the half of the book that seems to be an audition to a publisher of chick lit) and you'll find insults - yes insults - about Franks' appearance, his singing, Kim's singing, the live recording process, the gullability of reviewers... and so on and so on. To read it you'd think "DITS" was an appalling tuneless dirge with endless half-cocked solos. The author has either missed everything unique and brilliant about Frank and the Pixies, or he doesn't get it, or he gets it and he hates it. I think this thread has been far too polite about this book. I don't expect uncritical appraisal, but who the hell wants to read a three hundred page long bad review.
I certainly hope John Mendelssohn had as miserable time as it sounds listening to Frank. |

Who really cares if this dude is not a fan of FB or Pixies. It's just another opinion. I had to order the book and will read it when it gets here. It doesn't bother me if he has a negitive opinion of them, he is intitled.

Like I said, I've only flipped through it. As a massive fan I thought a purchase was a no-brainer. But when you do get a look at it please put your honest opinion up here. Even some of the photo captions are nasty, undignified comments... and those are the type of opinion he is NOT entitled to put into print. My advice, to anyone who has not seen this book, is to STAY AWAY.
But hey, that's just my opinion. |

Unfortunately I ordered the thing, but before it arrived I got clued in to it via threads here. Not gonna read it, and I wouldn't even sell it or give it away. If I could I'd probably buy up all the copies just so initiates wouldn't think it's anything worth reading. Mendelssohn's is not "just another opinion". The guy's a fool who had no business writing this book, and probably no books at all. The guy does not respect the written word. |

I haven't read the book, and wasn't aware it was full of potshots at FB and company or I probably wouldn't have bothered talking with John in the first place. I mean, if he doesn't like the music, fine, but that's inexcusable.

the worst thing about this is not that he doesn't like the pixies and badmouth them. the problem is that he's selling this book to the fans withtout warning them that it's anti-pixies. it should say on the cover: "Pixies suck" so that everybody know what they's buying! |

Trust the mad man. It's more FB who gets a verbal 'kicking' than the band. |

If you'd like a good laugh, go look at the reviews on amazon--6 reviews, every one of them is one star. I almost feel bad for the author.

back in the day when John was first here and people (including me) gave him a hard time for not being a huge pixies fan, i tried to see the positive side and thought: maybe it's good that a non-obsessed freak fan write a biography; could be a little more objective and less tainted by a fans very biased perspective.
i guess i was wrong.
now someone needs to write a freakish, fan love-fest book to make up for this |

If you want to see the band trashed in a tabloid fashon, buy it.
Otherwise it would be a compete and utter waste of you money.
Even newspaper makes cheaper kindling. |

Hahaha, I love that last bit as a tagline for the book. They could print it on the cover.

Away from the pointless fictional fan chapters, check out the part of the book after the bands split. Look at the FB solo shit. You see? |

i'm sure i've posted this before, but it must have been the new crappy book thread. still relevant here.
http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11577&whichpage=1
this is a thread that happened months ago, and if you can be arsed to look, you may find some quotes from the book that aren't exactly favourable*. All be it just one man's opinion, but still, this is a book about Frank Black and the Pixies.
[*edit - i didn't want a book in favour or out of favour of the music, just one that delved deep into the history, gave us the facts, some nice quotes and additional info to the already known) |

the fact that this guy does'nt like the Pixies (especially Frank) really isn't the thing that frustrates me. What frustrates me is that I spent $20.00 on something that is so poorly written that it feels like a zine put out by a couple of 15 year olds.
Plus it's very poorly researched. I can look through article archives and use google too, bro!

Ok, I've gotten to the part where he starts making little comments about Franks build and Kims voice. Also decided to skip the adventures of Her Perf, because I don't care what she is up to.

But I swear there were at least three. Plus, I didn't read that fan mumbo jumbo, so there could be many, more. |
