You might be disappointed.
The author did not have access to the band, so you will not find any information that is not already available somewhere.
Moreover, he does not like the music very much, and he is quite explicit about it. |

Why would someone devote a lot of time to writing a book about a musician they dislike?
Oh yeah, money.

Exactly. The author was paid to write on a band he did not think much about. As he is honest, he expressed his opinions. As a result, you get a book that is likely to upset many fans. More especially if they are also Frank Black fans. |

I would wait for some reviews on Amazon before I threw down 20 bucks for the book. From what has been said here about Mendelssohn, it does sound like he simply wrote the book to cash in on the Pixies reunion.

Is this the one that is written by the person that's also writing the musical, or is that someone different? |

I actually had a preliminary version of the text in my hands, several months ago. I don't know if it was much modified afterwards.
Not the whole book was directly about the Pixies and Frank Black. There were also chapters narrating a fictitious story about an early fan in Boston. I did not count the pages, but there is a significative number of them on this side subject.
The story is quite well narrated, but it only compiles information gathered from articles and interviews hardcore fans have already read.
From what I remember the parts reviewing the albums give the impression that there is one or two good songs on each. Maybe more on Trompe Le Monde. Overall, the part of the book about the Pixies is like "I don't get it, but why not?". The judgement on Frank Black is much harder.
Something funny, the author systematically arguments, often in a polemical way, against what are usually considered to be the main trademarks of the band: the originality of the loud/quiet dynamics, the influence on Nirvana, their sense of melodies, the vocal harmonies, the evocating power of the lyrics...
Throughout the book, the English press is systematically ridiculed about its very emphatic way to praise the band at the time (think of all the NME and Melody Maker articles and reviews).
And in the version I saw there were statements about Ken Goes that I personally found extreme border to plain insult.
For me, there might be enough in the book I read for some people in this forum to issue a death warrant against the author. A little bit like what happened to Patrick McGoohan in the 60's after the last episode of The Prisoner.

http://www.londoning.com/JohnMendelsohn/journo.html This is the author's site. You'll find some interesting links about who he is.I shared a couple of e-mails with John while he was doing some research about the Univesity of Puerto Rico and the male dorm where Charles stayed while down in my home island around 1985.I believe that Alec Eiffel site gets credited too in the book.Well that's all for now I got to drive to Tampa in a couple of hours to see the Pixies!!!! |

So it's a book about a band a journalist doesn't really like? What's the point of that?

i don't think he ever said he didn't like them. that has been misconstrued in my opinion. he's just not an obsessive fan, like some people on this list.
i haven't read the book yet so i can't comment. but really, i think there are positives to someone writing from a non-obsessed-fan point of view. it might be a little more objective.
also, even if the book contains things we already know, that doesn't mean that the general populace does. for the person who's just been introduced (younger fans etc..) maybe i'll be a good resource to have it all in once place.
like i said, i haven't read the book.
i will say John seems like a cool guy in corresponding with him

Hi.
From time to time The Pixies or myself are approached by writers, wannabe writers, film makers, wannabe film makers, and others, to do something on the band. For lots of different reasons, we or our manager frequently decline these offers. Usually because we find the proposals to be a bit predictable, mundane and generally a waste of time for us. Nothing personal. It's a free country. People can write about whatever they want. This guy John wanted access to the band and we did not care to participate. You may draw your own conclusions. Sometimes people who want to do something on the band assume that just because it has been proposed that we would, of course, be delighted to accomodate. And when we do not accomodate them they sometimes get pissy and grouchy. I don't know what this person's attitude is as we have never spoken and I have never read anything that he has written.

Hey Frank,
Thanks for the great show at the Ryman. Can't wait to see you again. The Pixies or Frank Black, it's all Rock and Roll to me.
Go ahead and get some rest at the end of the tour, spend some time with the family, but hurry up and get back to work, please. There's music to be made and you're just The Man to do it.
Thanks again, OldManInaCoffeeCan |

I have a book which I bought off e-bay, called "Planet Of Sound" by Jordi Bianciotto. It's about Pixies, The Breeders, Frank Black, & The Amps. As regards the forthcoming John Mendelssohn book; FB hasn't sanctioned it, so it is therefore our moral duty to steal a copy. Usually when I'm shoplifting, I get my elderly mother to fake a seizure in the store, which buys me plenty of time to stuff my coat full of swag. If an alarm is triggered on the way out, I just tell them that it's the old dear's pacemaker. That way, nobody asks any awkward questions.

I had a quick look at this book in a local record store and what I read was totally off the mark - the author really lays into SMYT...I lost interest after that.
