Yep, from the 10 tracks that will play for me, I dig it. Of course, I love that old country sound this albums seems to reminisce upon.
Pixies reunion on the other hand....make all the cash you want from this Frank, but please hurry back to your solo career. I blew my wad on the Pixies long ago. The records (especially Surfer Rosa and Doolittle) are fun to drag out every now and again and/or strum along and sing with my guitar, but the solo material is SO far above and beyond that material. From the epic and quirky greatness that is TOTY to the brilliant desert rock greatness that is BLD....and now to the mellow sounds of "honeycomb"......... |

Just listen to Honeycomb some more (as well as those 2 brilliant Flying burrito Bros. albums I put up for you) and you'll be on my side here! |

Iīve listened to it several times and Iīm loving it! But if people donīt know Frank Black from his beggining until now you almost canīt say that itīs the same Frank Black and Black Francis...Thatīs why heīs so good!

Aside from the obvious time constraints, I'd not object to him continuing his solo career alongside that of the Pixies. There's still great work to be done with Joey, Kim and Dave. |

Yeah but in a way he won't play anymore his great solo songs if he stays with the Pixies...That's what makes me optimistic : FB will be back with his solo work, don't know when but he will...he can't let down all his songs... |

This is the most amazing album he's ever done. My favourite tracks are Selkie Bride, Honeycomb, and All Around The World, but I love them all! They just need a few listens, but I can assure you that Mr. Frank's done it again. |

Amen! Still haven't heard Honeycomb but I'm very comfident in it, as I consider SMYT to be his best solo record. And yeah, I wish the Pixies reunion would end soon. Just a selfish tought, cause I saw them last June and I know you Americans still haven't...

It almost feels like the quintessential FB album. There's some country-esque stuff, songs that remind me of TOTY and the first album, songs that seem like he got right what he was trying to do on COR. Anyone who misses that extra bit of sweet quirkiness will be happy with Honeycomb. A really really good album. And I hated it the first few times I listened to it. |

It's funny how some songs sometimes sound the same as Dire Straits...mainly due to some long solo endings... |

The outro to Storage is amazing. I can listen to it all day. It is so peaceful. Brilliant Guitar Work.
Selkie Bride is one of the most beautiful tracks Frank has done yet. Like the majority of his albums I didn't like Honeycomb at all at first. I would say now that 15 out of the 19 tracks are simply amazing.
I got me so down I got me a headache. |

Finally Selkie Bride is getting recognition!
For some reason when the outro to Storage is playing, I have "If you don't know me by now" in my head. Yeah, I know. I'm sorry.
I do find it shocking, not that this album has grown on me, but that while I did realize that all FBs stuff takes some growing, I was still prepared to write off most of this one as "too country" until I spun it several more times. I said, "I know it usually takes time, but I don't know if I'm ever going to get into this." Stupid me!

Yeah, an old FB fan like me (ten years, since TOTY came out) have learned to be surprised at each new album, even if between each there's a link. Even between Trompe and S/T (orange, yellow) there's a link. This time, the most surprising change is the sound. and it' a good surprise!
It tooks me 2 times to like it, 10 to love it.

I've been away from the forum for a while and now I find Honeycomb is out there! Damn I'm excited. It'll be even more exciting if Frank tours with Honeycomb and he plays in my part of the world.

Every Frank Black album I hear I always think at first that Frank has released a shocker.... but then after the 5th or 6th listen realise that it is in fact a great album... the only album I didn't think about in this way was SMYT, and now I am a little bored of it as it appealed upon first listen. Honeycomb is a cracking album, Frank really is a genius there is no question about that.

SMYT is the first FB album that I loved since the first listen. And the best part is that a year later, I still consider it as his best solo album ever.

How are these albums getting out early. Honeycomb and FBF, that is. Is this Frank or someone at the record company (Spinart) doing this on purpose to get it into more people's hands?

Honeycomb was a friend of someone from a label.

Nice hints there, johntiven. It's too bad I don't get them all. Who is this Ellis Hooks person, other than a singer/songwrited on Artemis records?

If you download and don't buy, you will make it impossible for the recording process to continue. So if you are downloading from illicit sites in order to get the record early, your best way of atoning is to go down to your local record store and buy ANY of the Frank Black records commercially available.
If you have them all, buy another copy and give it to a friend and your conscience will be clear. While you're at it, buy an ELLIS HOOKS cd.
You don't need to state the obvious here mate, I think most of us will download and then buy the cd when it is released. I got DITS and SMYT before it was released, but had to get the cd when it came out as I didn't feel right about nicking Franks stuff.
Even living out here in China, I'll still find a way of getting a real copy even if I have to pay a little more than usual (I don't mind as I have the priviledge of listening to it before its released).

In answer to the questions about how the soundscans are doing on the ELLIS CD asked in the other thread, we won't be able to see them until this coming Weds. But don't let that stop you from purchasing the CD. UNCOMPLICATED, on Artemis Records. Also known in Europe as THE HAND OF GOD, on Zane Records. His first album UNDENIABLE is only available in Europe, and it's on Zane.
And I promised to give you some details. I HELMed the sessions, we had a great CROP of players, with a full BLOCK of tunes. They were never WORKMANlike, but inspired to the MACs. I have to go now, I must reKOOPERate.
best, Jon Tiven
Ellis Hooks is a singer/songwriter who I produce and is most easily described as the contemporary equivalent of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and John Fogerty rolled into one. He's from Bayminette, Alabama and sings backgrounds on HONEYCOMB and will be doing harmonies on the rest of the album as we finish. He is SUPERLATIVE.
You want more news on the new recordings, motivate me. Buy Ellis' CD. We're all bursting to tell you about it. But I need some evidence that you all care. Soundscans come out this Weds, and if I am happy I will try to bring some happiness to all of you.
best, Jon Tiven
