Yeah, now that I've finally heard the album, the character from a bad video game theory was pretty bad.
The seal person legend is much more interesting. I like the sound of the record very much and glad I got to hear it in this form. It sounds as if he is re-recording most of Honeycomb though...is this like a time-capsule piece or collector's item now?
And I enjoy Song of the Shrimp.

Its a good song, and not simple by any means, but, I just dont think that type of 'storytelling' is FB's strong suit.
I like Frank's narrative songs, they are way elaborate than Bon Jovi, think of "St Francis", for instance.

Wow Frank replied to my post...I feel special. Next step: Get him to visit Australia. Might be a bit tougher.
PS. Selkie Bride and Atom In My Heart are my current faves. But everything Ive heard is magic, of course. |

Just want to back-up the "can you visit Australia" request plea. PLEASE! can you come back here to Australia. Months ago I heard that Big Day Out, January '05 was going to be headlined by PIXIES & AC/DC .. [while that now seems remote] would that be the best ever or what! There could even be a PIXIES/FB club tour too. It's just a dream at the moment, but I just hope it can happen eventually, PLEASE! PLEASE! The interest and expectation is definitely there, but it just has to fit in with FB's and everyone else's plans I suppose.
Will 2005 have parallel PIXIES & FB ventures? I suppose is the question & the answer...

Seconded.
When I heard Honeycomb, I had to play Sing For Joy about six times in a row. i couldn't get past it and it was the very first song I listened to. it was the chorus that got me. (Ellis) Hook, line and sinker. it's so simple and repetitive but there's something in the way Frank sings it that just makes it magical. Beautiful in fact.
And I'm with the 'it sounds like Everything Is New" crew
"Mama killed a pumpkin, she thought it was a sweet, she put it on the table, but it was still meat, I think they're changing the name again"
This song totally confirms, to me, franks finally made the album he's always wanted to. It's like the catholics stuff was practise, the warm up or jam before the big one. The signs are in those records. It's like his dream was to record in Nashville. Now he's only gone and done it. Nice one, Frank. I know it's similar in parts to the Cs, but it seems so much more old school, like his seasoned Nashville buddies. They can't help but make brilliant songs.
"My God! Turn that TOTY down. I'm trying to listen to Honeycomb."

Well I am still pretty new to Honeycomb. I've just listened it to it three times and it is Amazing. It's one of those albums that you put in and you don't want to skip a single track. You listen to every note with your senses heightened and every lyric trying to capture the meaning Frank really inteneded.
I have to say too it's also a great album to listen to while you're working. I am sure it's good for other things too, but I haven't tried, yet .
Kathryn, I agree with you about Violet. I used to think Catcus was the perfect love song and now I think it is Violet. I love every word and how Frank sings them... I really did like the red as blood and blue sky thing because I thought that was a really creative way to say Violet.
The lyrics are amazing-- I know I won't be spoiling anything when I say you will be stunned.
Musically it's awesome too-- I am not going to give too much away but Frank has definately reached a new stratosphere musically... very Frank but also a blues/alt country-esque vibe...
This to me in my 30s and 40s what Doolittle was to me in my teens and 20's.
I really don't know how they can change it before they release it-- its so good. But knowing Frank it will be even better when the offical release is.
Kathryn, yes I agree, play it forward and by few extras for friends & family... they will kiss your ring and Franks when they get a listen!! |

How great it is to be in the middle of reading a thread, just about to go to sleep, and then run across the post by FB himself. Kind of feels like your're driving to work on auto-pilot, then Frank says "take a right turn here" and you look over to find him sitting in the passenger seat.
I know very few of the Honeycomb song titles as my copy came with no notes of any kind. Instead of searching for them, I think it will give that added suspense to just wait for the actual hard copy. |

You know the song titles more than you think. You've probably been singing them as a chorus.

Hey K, another night capped off with the last swig of this can, Belgium's finest, and I'm-a singin'....for joy, singin' for laughs. I don't think this song will ever debase the feeling it gave me on first listening. It's still there. Through all the distortion and riff of the years, this is some serious audio pleasure on these ringing ears of mine. |

Well, I missed the big "Hey, get your pre-release Honeycomb online if you're crafty" party... I don't know, I"m just not one of those "[honey]Comb the net for something that you aren't supposed to have yet" kinda people... not that I wouldn't be.... but... I don't know.. I guess I'm equally patient and lazy
BUT....
WHEN is this album releasing for real?? I'm goin nuts hearing not only ALL about it, but also getting steamed that people are hearing tracks that us PATIENT (lazy) folks WON'T get to hear.

Georgie Porgie used to get real high He used to kiss the world till it made him cry He was under the bottles command But last winter he got it together and Happiness came with the warmer weather laying across all the land
He had a love and she liked to drink She got it together But you know what I think? I think she was still feeling glum
She got a gun and she shot him in the head She shot herself and so they were wed as the air conditioner hummed
Sing for joy Sing for laughs Sing for joy Sing for joy If nothing else Sing for joy
Mamma killed a pumpkin She thought it was a sweet She put it on the table But it was still meat She forgot the sugar again
Daddy came home, she had tears in her eyes He said "Give me grilled cheese And paperback French fries" See, he forgot the sugar again
We had a wander seven years out West It wasn't exactly the wilderness But I felt like an Israelite
Mamma is a gypsy, she'll never find a town Daddy went to sea but the boat went down And the flames shot into the night
Sing for joy Sing for laughs Sing for joy Sing for joy If nothing else Sing for joy
I know a girl who lives on the hill I don't know if her sister will I was thinking about her best friend
Oh listen to me I'm desperate boy I think I'm gonna have to sing for joy And I think this has just got to end
I get away in my getaway car Every now and then I'll send my regards from a payphone down in the flats
I'm sorry for the love I'm sorry for the pain I'll say I'm sorry baby again and again I'm sorry we're joining the stats
Sing for joy Sing for laughs Sing for joy Sing for joy If nothing else Sing for joy

Kathryn,
Thank you so much for putting up the lyrics to this song. I'm just wondering if in the chorus, Frank sings "if nothing helps" instead of "if nothing else"? |

"Else" is probably right. I keep hearing "help" for some reason. I also keep hearing "Wearing my skirt, wearing my skirt" in Weird at my school, so... |
