Take a Vicodin and knock it down with a 12- pak. Listen to 'Tight Black Rubber'. Now try to say it's not one of the best songs you've heard in the last 3 years...

...a tight black rubber ain't no chimpey and man? /..a tight black rubber an egyptian man? I'm sure I'm hearing it wrong :) It's definately guilder I think. He seems to have developped some emotional band with everything dutch lately. When he was talking dutch in the beginning of 'angels come to confort you' I was like huh, did I hear that right? rewind! |

You obviously haven't cottoned onto the 'Herman Brood' links yet, then. Go and check out the 'Bluefinger (spoilers)' thread. You'll love it... |

while listening to tbl tonight for the millionth time, i finally realised what song it reminded me of.... subbacultcha.... give them both a listen and it sticks out like a sore thumb....to me atleast....
and does anyone else think that the "it's amazing it works" line relates to the fact that there's some really simple rhyming lyrics used and he's alluding to the fact that they actually sound good, and not total rubbish....so simple, yet so good....type of thing...

There's a video of Herman Brood on YouTube -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaS0VzvfxGY -- where he snorts some coke, gets a big grin on his face, and says, "Amazing, it works!" It seems safe to guess that's where FB got the line for the song. I think the song is about heroin, not coke, but I really think that's what he's talking about.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I love this song... Frank back to his best if you ask me. When I first heard this song I thought of Lou Reed. Does anyone think Frank sounds a little Reedy in this song?
Today I look forward to the traffic jam on the way to work, justso that I can get more time to listen to this music. Haven't got any weed on me at the moment, and cannot afford to buy any either so I am gonna use my supply of nutmeg to get myself into a state and appreciate this album whilst fucked up. Apparently if you eat raw nutmeg it gives you a marijuana like high... never tried it before.

I definitely do!

okay, about three listens later, and I'm hooked. Its really strange to me how this happens to me on almost EVERY FB album, but I hear it at first and go 'oh well, his earlier stuff is great at least... can't be greedy' and then a few closer listens and it just emerges. THe ending of Angels Come to Comfort You DEFINITELY sounds like it could fit on TOTY, as does Discotheque 36. And he does sing a bit more than I was griping about on Tight Black Rubber, though he is channeling his inner Lou Reed in a good way. The shouts definitly fit into a pixies-ish vibe. And might I add the muscle-y end riff on Lolita is another great blast of Frank-noise, fittting right into his amazing ability to slice pieces of seemingly 'different songs' together (I'd put the end of Angels in that too).

I hear that, too. Might be inclined to compare TBR to one of John Cale's bassy, churning tunes (Gun, Pablo Picasso, Chickenshit).

I heard Subbacultcha as well.
Still my least like song on Bluefinger by far. I just don't think it is melodic enough. Particular the Verse Melody. Every other song has really grown on me but this is the lone one. Hopefully it will eventually click.
Here I am for your judgement When the paint grows darker still

The song is so randomly arranged, it almost sounds like it soundtracks something about or by Brood. |

How strange ! It's my favorite bluefinger song, and I especially like the spoken voice. There ARE melodies in those verses. Like when you hear a Rapper. Many times in the past Frank made a "kinda Subbacultcha" song (the marsist, so bay...) and it was allright but not THAT twisted, THAT out-of-tune-but-super-sexy-rock'n'roll. I guess "Ole Mullholland" was his best attempt up to now. Jumping Beans was also great but a bit more folky. But Tight Black Rubber is even cooler and sexier than Subbacultcha ! |

Definitely my favourite of the five I've heard so far (Youtube), though I'm hearing a skewed version of it still sounds great. Live will kill. Hope they play with all the swagger and sex they can muster. I dig The Fall. Very Fall sounding Steve Hanley bass. The opening is pure Fall. Subbacultcha was another Fall inspired sex beast of a song. Grotesque you know The Fall? Can't think of too many bands that led so heavy with bass, Morphine maybe. Still can't decide on the chorus; Ain't no trip/trick being man/be a man. Thank you coastline for the 'It's Amazing, it works' Youtube. Good find. Yes OMOTY the switch from 1st chorus to 2nd verse is fucking sublime. I'm there on holiday right now.

I love the way the bass lurches into the second verse, then just for a split second it sounds like they've messed the timing up. Brilliant, this song could be what the phrase 'cool as fuck' was invented for.

Re sounding like The Fall: Absolutely agree, wonder if he's into them? But it also reminds me of Lou Reed (as already mentioned) and even The Beastie Boys. Oh, and Ten Percenter - has that same, crunchy, dirty sound. My favourite Bluefinger song at the moment, really gives me an adrenaline charge.
Just realised it's Threshold that reminds me of The Beastie Boys, not TBR. I've got a hangover.

I've heard him mention them 3 or 4 times. There's a concert recording (Brixton Academy 1990 I think) where he intros Subbacultcha as Fall-sounding. Plus the talking-at-you-rap style that Grotesque refers to is Mark E Smith's style. I'm certain The Fall are huge to FB. They have that full-on-sideways-at-you thing that inspires FB I think, and one of the most impressive back catalogues in history.
Plus I think calling the album Bluefinger is in part a nod to the Fall's I Am Kurious Oranj, another case of a songwriter making an album so heavily inspired by some other branch of the arts.

We've got to be talking more about The Fall if we want to talk about Bluefinger. That's clear from the sound.

I think it's really only TBR on Bluefinger that's particularly Fall-like. Can you elaborate?
I keep hearing things that remind me of so many other artists too, for instance the chorus of Angels Come To Comfort You is very Elvis Costello I think.

Well... it's not! And you know what? When I watched the Pixies dvds I realized a lot of great guitar parts were actualy Frank's work, especially when he's not singing the part at the same time (just like the intro you're talking about). One single example among others: the brief guitar part in Gigantic before the final blast (everything breaks and you just hear Frank playing 2 note chords with just two strings, a bit like Santiago in Where is my mind). He is also the pixies guitarist ! Being with guitar heroes all that time after the pixies, his guitar work was a bit shadowed. Bluefinger came to put the clocks at the right time(french expression). |

The ones you can get cheap second-hand or borrow from friends.
I started late with Extricate in 1990 then worked backwards. I Am Kurious Oranj is a good one to start with as it has at least something in common with Bluefinger. And don't worry, let the albums infuriate you. That's Mark E Smith's modus operandi.
And you're right about Charles' underrated guitar pickings. Joey's been the only one to properly compliment them. Don't get me wrong I love Lyle and Scott but...now I'm happy that the clocks are put right.

I've always been pretty intimidated with the Fall catalog. I got 458489 A Sides though it didn't seem to grab me. I know MES has phases like our FB has his phases, and I appreciate the pointers.... |

Although I love The Fall most of their albums (that I have at least, around half of them) contain at least one unlistenable track or one ridiculously overlong dirge. Most accessible imo: The Wonderfull And Frightening World of..., This Nations Saving Grace, Bend Sinister, Extricate, Shiftwork, Code:Selfish, The Unnuterable. Right, that's completely hijacked this thread.

A long time ago I was stunned by a Fall song (dont remember wich one) but I couldnt understand anything to their discography so I became a Wire fan instead. Easier. And you could play the old wise guy exatly the same way, getting rid of the sonic youth fans. It's true that Frank really sounds like Mark E Smith on this one. I didnt notice it though it's obvious. |
