I know one guy on this forum -- his name rhymes with Mama's Pants -- who thinks it's the bee's knees. And I tend to agree. It's way up there for me. EDF's keys alone make this a killer song. And there's one of the great lines from an FB song: "You don't have much taste for bouquet." And the bass line that follows that line is outstanding. And ...

Superabound is my 2nd favorite Frank Black song. I too have a favorite line from this song...the rhyming of potlatch and Sasquatch.

Also shocked to hear "So Hard to Make Things Out" called boring...there's at least 3 different songs in there, each very diverse in mood...anything but boring

Most Overrated: Raider Man. The Marsist. Bullet. So Bay (I'll get ripped for that one...). His Kingly Cave. Don't Get Me Wrong.

More than any of the songs, I find a significant overrating of Dog In The Sand (the album...). Good album, but usually held up on here (with TOTY) as the great Frank masterpieces. There are quite a few below-average (remember it's all relative) Frank tunes on this disc, Blast Off, I've Seen Your Picture, Hermaphroditos, I'll Be Blue. And the high points aren't nearly as strong as other discs. Pistolero crushes it.

Just one man's opinion

Agree on Superabound, the whole song is a masterpiece for me, the lyrics, the bass, the keys and all the twangly guitar licks, it's perfect.

I definitely second the shock on "so hard to make things out" -- this is one of my favorite FB songs, so many great things in here, not the least of which is that awesome FB "why is it so hard to live" notion - he just makes pain and suffering so much fun!

Ha! Yeah, well, I don't know when the term 'emotional' started to get a bad wrap, but you could make a pretty good case for some 'emo' threads in frank black's work -- suffering, you ain't me, so hard to make things out, I need peace.... it could go on! But really, his loving acceptance of these darker, sometimes overwhealming emotions has really meant a lot to me over the years. And I wouldn't say he revels in 'oh the beautiful sorrow of it all', he's much more zen. Accepting, working through, and moving on. TO A ROCK N' ROLL BEEEEAAATTT......

I understand the technical meaning of 'emo', but still, when did being 'emotionally hardcore' become a bad thing? I like emotions!

I associate the term with bands like Promise Ring, Capn Jazz, Rainer Maria, etc. Never really got into these groups, a little Ranier Maria, but someone will have to explain to me the hang-up with this idea.

To me it's the sound of "emo", not neccesarily the subject matter.
So no matter what he writes about, Frank will never be "emo".
Unless he suffers severe brain damage in like a car accident or something.

As for Frankīs solo output, I donīt know how rated it is (outside this forum)... most people seem to rate Pixies much higher. I used to, until a few years ago; maybe it has something to do with age, but nowadays Iīd rather put on a solo album than a Pixies album. And I almost like Honeycomb and FM/RM the best... anyway, what I wanted to say is that I canīt think of an overrated Frank Black song.

First, thanks for the Breeders demos. Great stuff.

I have TONS of trouble with Honeycomb and FMRM, yet, I am now totally obsessed with the acoustic version of Raider Man, esp. the WOXY version. I play it over and over and can't get it out of my head, but when I play the FMRM version, I HATE it. It's all in the phrasing of the main riff, the 'stompy' version as FB does it on acoustic, compared to the 'jazzy' version on the record.

Has there ever been a song that you disliked originally, but then came to love in an alternate version/live version?

Did FB every do a studio version of COMING INTO LOS ANGELES? I have two live versions and love them.

It's a good song but not on this totaly coherent album.
You know what Silver is ? It's the pixies' Within you without you !
But Sergent Pepper is NOT the beatle's doolittle. That all aniversary thing made me realize I really dont like it.

"Within you without you" is one of my favourite Pepper tracks... sure beats most of the McCartney ones. Not "Fixing a hole", though. And "A day in the life" is untouchable.

I like "Silver" as well. Doolittle was the first Pixies album I heard, and I was actually underwhelmed. A few good songs, but many others sounded like throwaways. It wasnīt until I heard the mega-brilliant first side of Bossanova that I got back and started to discover Doolittle. It was the tracks on the second side that opened up the album for me, those tracks that I thought were throwaway tracks... "La la love you", "Crackity Jones", "Hey", "Gouge away" - and "Silver". Doolittle would definitely be a more one-dimensional album without it.

this is my favorite song; you can't go wrong with a diddy that has the phrase "cul-de-sac kampong" in it or better yet the dynamite duo of "freon bingo".

i even like the chorus, although i guess you would not call it the highlight of the song.

and does the sun not burn mean and big sometimes?

i mean, you can't really deny that.

and how hard can it be to be a western star?

i just don't know; that's a question you just have to ask
yourself.

If it weren't for the intelligent discussion this thread would be really boring.
"I like it"/"How can you like it?
"I don't like it"/"How can you not like it?"

I love it but Silver's a b-side IMO. I suppose the swapping of instruments makes it a band/album moment. Could have easily swapped it for Into The White but maybe that would have made Doolittle too good. Western Star's fantastic and a great live moment and it's chorus drives hard. Speedy Marie's the one that I never rated so highly.
