Head Carrier was announced on July 6 2016 with the release of Um Chagga Lagga, and album was released in September.
Any thoughts on this album a decade in?
I'll just start by asking again: "Any unreleased material from these sessions?" |

It has the best 2.0 song which is Baal‘s back (minority opinion, I know).
The title track is also one of their better ones.
Um chagga lagga is a horrible song.
Liittle birdie (?) is neat.
The rest I don’t really remember that well, or don’t really want to remember.

Wow, Baal’s Back is my least favorite Charles composition of all time, so we are off to a great start here for interesting conversations.
But I love little birdie if you mean the Pure Guava version |

Should have stuck with the original title Cephalophore.
From this album I quite like the title track, Talent, Plaster of Paris and All the Saints.
I listened to it a lot when it was released, rather than it being the usual FB type album that takes time to grow and reveal itself after a while, for me once I 'got it' I was done with it which felt a bit weird.
I rarely listen to it now, much less compared to say Indie Cindie. |

HC is a record I can enjoy for what it is
Indie Cindy sounds a lot more like a missed opportunity
Because it has some moments that sounded pure Pixies to me
But the overall song writing and production frustrate me
All good songs, some very good production, but a lot of repetition and slick vocals (autotune?). The whole record could easily be 10 minutes shorter withough missing that much.
Head Carrier sounds like a FB record with the Pixies as a backing band
Production is a mismatch maybe, but the sound is pleasant enough for me
Not even sure it has better songs than IC, but I can enjoy them
Baal's Back is great, so is Um Chagga Lagga
I can live without Might As Well Be Gone or Plaster of Paris on a Pixies record

From the wikipedia page
Production started around late 2015 after finding a new producer, Tom Dalgety (replacing previous producer Gil Norton, who had worked on the Pixies last four albums). The band met with him as they were recording demos for the followup of their 2014 album Indie Cindy. Previously they had debuted a number of songs live that they were testing as potential tracks for their next album. Such tracks included "Super Lecker", "O' Little Cloud", and "Down to Tulom" |

This album sounds very, very bad when you put it on a shuffle with other Pixies/Frank stuff. That's the first time I understood why people criticize the mix.
I love Talent, All My Saints, and...that may be it. Other songs I merely like.
I'm not sure what would help the album or what I expected, but releasing a second album as Pixies 2.0 was an important moment and I think it was kind of fumbled. |

Oh yes, I forgot All my saints. I think it’s a good one.
Baal’s back has energy and urgency, and great guitar and drum sound. And it is short and makes a point in this short time (like Planet of Sound, There goes my gun, etc). Essentially everything what makes a good Pixies song, and more than I can say about most of 2.0 songs.
It’s not a criticism, but after the mixed and inconsistent sound/mood/style of pre-BTE albums, all following albums sound more like Tom Waits or Nick Cave or whatever to me. I just don’t really hear any Pixies or FB there anymore, or at least not what made previous Pixies or FB albums exciting to me. I think to some extent it is also the playing of Joey and Dave, which was so distinct before but now is largely unidentifiable to me - in that sense that they could be replaced and I possibly would not even realize.
Again, no criticism, nothing is forever or should even stay the same forever. Some people like their specific evolution, others (like me) simply are less excited about the 2.0 music.

| I feel like Baal's Back may be one of the worst mixes I've ever heard in my life. Hence why I made a thread here trying to "fix" it, though I failed. I really feel like the mix is a massive detriment to the song itself. I hate the song, but I may like it if it sounded like it was from Bossanova (Rock Music) or something. |
