Just got back from Throwing Muses in Brugge, Belgium Got a new perspective on Pixies
I've seen FB and the gang play old songs spot on, with a lot of energy Not everything, take for instance the BossaTrompe-songs, is still possible for them, but still Most of the time they ripp through their old songs.
TM had a very hard time playing their oldest material. The original rhythm section isn't part of this tour. Their former bass player (Fred Abong, played on The Real Ramona and the first Belly record) is now the drummer (!). Kristins son is on bass. Pretty suprising and neat! Very fun. But now way as good as the rhythm section on the records (including the new ones, although I do think Hersh plays a lot herself)
They are not as tight as they used to be. To the point that I was seriously regretting my decision to see this show.
But the newer material was mostly fine. Especially the slower stuff. Really clicked. Perhaps because I've not heard these songs a zillion times like the classic material. They also played mainly new stuff. 25 songs in total and 17 were from their last 3 records. Almost nothing from their 80's material.
It made me think that Pixies shows could be (even) better if they would play the fresh material. And it also got me that Pixies should get respect for still filling those larger venues and can still play Tame like it's 1989. For us mega fans it's also nice that they throw in a song of 5 or even 10 from whatever record they are touring for.
