Goddammit. I had really high hopes for CVB coming to St. Louis (bassist Victor Krummenacher's home town in his youth), but they blew that one outta the water. Fuck beans.

From cooking vinyl:
Camper Van beethoven
Tusk COOKCD252 Released 27th January 2003
In the early spring of 1986, the members of Camper Van Beethoven went to stay at a friend's parents vacation house in the ski resort town of Mammoth, ostensibly to work on songs for their next record, but mostly to have a little fun. Shortly after arriving a major snowstorm hit. Drummer Chrispy Derson was injured on what could only be described as an ill-advised makeshift toboggan run. He broke his arm. After walking an hour and a half (each way) to the medical clinic, and a general sharing of Chrispy's pharmaceuticals, it seemed somewhat logical to re-record Fleetwood Mac's infamous "Tusk". It happened to be one of the 5 or 6 albums in the otherwise empty house. The band had a four track cassette recorder, and the wounded Chrispy tapped out the rhythms on the then state-of-the-art drumulator.
Sometime around 7pm on day two (track 8: that's all for everyone) it occurred to some members of the band that this was a colossal waste of time - which it was - and that perhaps the band should be writing new material. Other members of the band thought it was a sign of weakness and general spineless-ness to give up on any musical endeavour however misguided it may seem at the time. And of course they were right also. But the deciding vote was having an argument with his girlfriend. She hadn't wanted to come to mammoth anyway and had insisted on them driving in her own car. The couple apparently had gotten into a major argument on the drive up, and the girlfriend had refused to leave the car. So someone would occasionally have to go outside into the snow and retrieve the missing band member who was out in the car with his girlfriend. not always an easy task as it was still snowing heavily and the wind was making some major drifts. This made it sometimes necessary to shovel a few feet of snow off the car to even get to a window. And then you never knew if you were gonna find the couple in an argument or 'reconciliation', if you catch my drift.
Raced with bitter cold and manual labour, inertia triumphed and Camper Van Beethoven's Tusk was born. The tapes were lost for many years. And frankly no one was looking for them. No one ever imagined it was anything worth releasing.
In February 2000 Greg Lisher found the tapes in a storeroom at his parents shop. The band had a listen to them and decided that it wasn't all that bad. In fact there was an oddly contemporary sound to the recording. Of course the tapes were badly damaged and required some reconstructing. Two iBooks, a G4 and the week between Christmas and New Years 2001 put it all back together. Some elements had to be added. We have not tried to disguise them. For instance an iBook covers for the lost vox on "Sisters". Some heavy looping is employed to create full songs out of a couple that were fragments. Otherwise it is what it is. And it's something of which the band is proud.
Cigarettes and Carrot Juice: The Santa Cruz Years (COOKCD247) is out now Tusk (COOKCD252) is released on 27th January 2003.

More from Cooking Vinyl (old news):
Monday 28th October sees the release of a limited edition (3000 only) Camper Van Beethoven box set. Featuring 4 previously released albums Ð Telephone Free Landslide Victory; II & III; CVB and Camper Vantiquities, plus 1 CD of CVB Live, this box set is the definitive Camper Van Beethoven collection.
Camper Van Beethoven formed in 1983 in Redlands CA a hot and dusty southern California town 80 miles east of Los Angeles. Founded by vocalist David Lowery, guitarist Chris Molla, and bassist Victor Krummenacher, they later moved to the seaside college community of Santa Cruz, CA in 1983, a town that at one point bore the unfortunate title of "the murder capital of America". CVB soon added drummer Anthony Guess (real name!) guitarist Greg Lisher and Jonathan Segel. The addition of Segel on violins, keyboards and mandolin gave the band their unique sound. Drawing together elements of ska, country, tex-mex, 60's psychedelia and folk, the band aptly described themselves as "surrealist absurdist folk", and quickly gained a reputation for their bizarre folk versions of hardcore songs.
The Dead Kennedys, Butthole Surfers, Minutemen and other west coast punk bands invited CVB to play with them. The Dead Kennedys Jello Biafra even advising them on their budding popularity: "never put your picture on the album artwork, it takes away the mystery". And though they didn't follow his advice exactly they sufficiently blurred and distorted their images on nearly every release.
In June 1985, their debut album "Telephone Free Landslide Victory" was released though Independent Project Music/Rough Trade. Featuring the classic "Take The Skinheads Bowling" and a cover of Black Flag's "Wasted", the album become a college radio staple and also made the Top 10 in many critic's polls.
"II & III" and "Camper Van Beethoven", were released the following year. "II & III" saw the band producing a proto indie rock sound, with touches of country as evidenced in "Sad Lovers Waltz" and their cover of Sonic YouthÕs "I Love Her All The Time". "Camper Van Beethoven" continued this vein and featured outstanding tracks, such as "Joe Stalin's Cadillac"e;, and a reverent version of Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive". The band also released an EP "Vampire Can Mating Oven", a bizarre (and intended to be not-so-nice) local nickname for the band. Around this time Chris Molla (for the previous year an on again off again member) left in the middle of a tour and was never invited back to perform or record with the band. Chris Pedersen was now the permanent CVB drummer.
Following the third album's critical acclaim, and national tours with bands such as R.E.M. and 10,000 Maniacs, Camper Van Beethoven signed to Virgin Records and released their major label debut, "Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart" (1988) and their final release "Key Lime Pie" (1989). Jonathan Segal, had by this point, left the band and Krummenacher, Pedersen and Lisher left during a 1990 European tour, effectively dissolving the band.
In 1993, Krummenacher remastered "Vampire Can Mating Oven" added some demos, b-sides, unreleased tracks and rare mixes, and released them through IRS as "Camper Vantiquities".
Whilst there has never been a formal reunion of Camper Van Beethoven, many of the band members have performed and recorded together in various combinations since CVBÕs demise. Frontman Lowery went on to form Cracker. Victor Krummenacher, Greg Lisher Chris Pedersen made 3 records as the Monks of Doom, as well as releasing solo records. Jonathan Segel released three records during the 1990Õs as Heironymous Firebrain, and various solo records. Other members have gone on to perform with the likes of Counting Crows, Sparklehorse, Jane's Addiction and Natalie Merchant.
Update. In July of 2002 CVB reunited for shows in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Ostensibly to promote the release of their "lost" 1987 4-track recording of Tusk. Yes a note for note cover of the Fleetwood Mac record. The band is considering touring in 2003.

mdisanto - go. The best way to describe CVB is, well, shit, I can't describe CVB. Country, folk, rock, and psychedelic (in a non-pretentious way, even!) music at it's best. If you want a good example of their sound, download the song "She Divines Water". They also do a lot of instrumentals. Probably at least 1/3 of their songs are without vocals.

What's that CVB song that got a lot of play in the later 80's? Started with a serious violin part (Velvet Underground-ish) and was quite good.
I remeber listening to it at camp when I was like 11-12 making Gymp Bracelets...

St. Francis - Pictures of Matchstick Men. Cover of a Status Quo song. It was #1 in the modern rock charts for a while, methinks.

Heh-heh. I used to get requests to play that violin part at parties. Along with the violin solo from Kansas' Dust in the Wind. (To my shame, I can play decent versions of both.) |

CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN... They covered a whole Fleetwood Mac Album. The song "Take The Skinheads.." is in the bowling movie BOWLING FOR COLUMBIA staring Roger Moore. I haven't seen the movie but I heard it's similar to that movie "King Pin" with Bill Murray and WOody Harrelson.
In this weeks issue of Blender magazine there is an article with Spanish Teenie Boppers Las Ketchup. They are HUGE PIXIES FANS!
Also Austrialian teenie bopper Rob Levitt has a song called "PIXIES" on his last albums. One of the lyrics is "FRANK & KIM WOULD NOT BE LEADERS/SO KIM DEAL STARTED THE BREEDERS
Also, there's a band on Grand Royal Records called LADIES WHO LUNCH, they have an album call KIMS WE LOVE and they do all PIXIES covers.
Also, Post-Grunge rock group from Memphis called HAGFISHES have a song called "FRANK BLACK". One of the lyrics is "CHANGE YOUR NAME FROM CHARLES to BLACK/ PLAY YOUR GUITAR AND DON'T LOOK BACK"
You can buy any of these album at your local Record Shop

Rumor has it they're going to be writing and recording some new songs. AWWWW YEAH. When friends and bandmates ask why I write so many songs that have an eastern-European or "world" feel to them, I just point them in the general direction of CVB.
