Ripping off Frank Black..negative. Do they sound a lot alike? Hell yeah, that's one of the first things I thought of when I heard White Blood Cells. White Stripes are great, though. De Stijl is a great fucking album, way better than WBC. WBC is a lot more pop rock than De Stijl, which is more raw, bluesy and rockabilly. Very, very nice. FB+WS would be a great show, for sure. I wonder if the White Stripes are fans of FB... |

i don't think it's a rip by any means... i mean really... i don't... i saw WS in April... amazing show... the only similarity I see is that I really dig and identify with both musicians... I think as far as Pixies rips were talking Modest Mouse, some Toadies, a couple Built to Spill Songs, Nirvana, Bush... not WS... they've got a nuique line up and blend of blues, rock and punk that you just don't find... and Jack smokes cigarettes...
I think frank is and has always been much more eloquent... he has much more grace and style and maturity and composure than Jack does... but see, that's why i like Jack.
Everything I like about frank is what I am not and what I wish to be... Jack is more plebian, and that's why I like Jack.
And fk the mainstream

I think of WS as more of a mock'n'roll, musically.....playing fairly standard stuff, but in a great, quirky way that seems to be making fun of that area of rock..especially with his singing..
Anyone else feel this?

i like the white stripes. my friend gave me a mix of about 20 songs and there are some nice songs on there. i think it's a mix of two or three of their albums. some songs i tend to skip over, and the quality does kinda get to me (a tiny bit) after a while. but i suppose that is the point. stripped down rock and roll. the total anti-pop way of recording. some of that crap on the radio sounds so digital and fake! anywho, i like the white stripes attitude about music and popularity and stuff. i've read a couple cool white stripes articles.

I have two white stripes albums, and that never really occured to me. The white stripes are pretty much just plain old rock and roll, but it's great |

I gotta disagree with you here.. i bought the strokes album right about when 'last nite' started getting airplay, before they got really big. 'Last nite' is a cool song, but buying the strokes album "Is this it" had me questioning the whole time i was listening to it, "No, seriously guys, is this REALLY it?" The album as a whole sucks! There are a couple good songs but they are so repetive. Very weak album in my opinion. I don't know what all the hype is about them. Maybe they can start a new genre of music...

I kinda like all of those "hip new alternative" bands i.e. the hives, vines, strokes, white stripes. Granted they do kinda resemble each other, but they sound good to me. I'm sure this isn't the case with you mike, but i hate the people that say they don't like them just cause they get airplay. Just cause more people like them doesn't mean they aren't good. If they started playing the Pixies or FB on the radio, would you stop liking them? I sure as hell wouldn't. Sorry this is kind of a rant, but i know people that think like this.

I'm with Derek! The Strokes suck. I do like the WS & The Hives though. Well, at least The Strokes' video for Someday was cool (the one where they play with GbV at some TV game).

I've had the strokes album for just about a year now, and I listened to it the other day and remembered how great it is. And while The White Stripes, The Strokes, and The Hives aren't quite groundbreaking, they put out good rock songs. I'd rather hear one of their songs anyday, compared to the rap/metal and what have you. |

Just happend to read this in an e-mail from fanscape. Catchy song.
quote: OK Go "Get Over It" The Chicago power quartet reminds us of The Cars and the Pixies and competes head on with The Strokes and The Vines. Great indie meets pop tunes including the catchy hit, "Get Over It."
Recommended if you like: The Hives, Jimmy Eat World, Weezer
I do like the Strokes, like not love. Also the Vines are Nirvana's ass wipe. I loved the Hives on the MTV award show they were fun, loved the Jagger impersonation.

I am a big fan of "underground" or "hip" music and the strokes eat balls. Maybe a good song or two, but there are many many many other bands out there that could kick their asses in more ways than one...
if anyone wants a list, just let me know...
have you heard "the burning brides" yet? for starters???

A list of good bands is always needed little one. I'm always into suggestions cuz things get pretty dry at times. Anyone who is annoyed by someone suggesting good music is not able to appreciate good music. therefore, list away. you can list away. List all day. If you want to.
cheers to music.

my list is of American/international/worldwide music is limited:
1)King Cobb Steelie 2)King Cobb Steelie (go figure) 3)Mummyheads 4)by divine right 5)Burden Brothers (say yes to rock)
yeah. |

I couldn't see a similarity between the bands and FB music for the fact that FB uses more complicated patterns and sometimes cuts a beat or a measure out, when WS, the stroke and hives seem to be 4/4 rockers. Alt. rock list 1. take a guess dumb-ass... 2. Old Lemonheads ( lick, hate your friends) 3. Sleeper (bubble gum pop, but it's my list-tied with Elastica) 4. Juliana Hatfield (one bad bitch with a LES PAUL) 5. SUPERDRAG (should have been number 2 actually-SUPER-FAVE!!) 6. Hum (should have tied with superdrag fornumber 2...actually)
and for the record I think weezer, hive/stroke/vine-stuff "nu-metal," Mtv, and player haters all suck a lot in the head. white stripes are cool though.

i'm with little black francis. the burning brides are great, but they're gonna be all over mtv soon just like the white stripes. i started listening to the white stripes at least a full year before the mtv thing and they're the only band of the 4 that i consider a real one. the vines are the worst in my opinion. i like a few of the hives and strokes songs but i certainly don't like them. but if people hear them, then look for more like them and trickle back into the real kickass indie bands then that's positive i think.
i loved the snl performance.

I dunno you know. Where do you draw the line between influential, reminiscient and rip-off?
You know for all that, give them some credit for trying.
I mean hell, I can hear Beatles songs and get elements of 4 or 5 songs, but so freakin' what?
I saw them live at Reading and I think their okay. But then, I know alot of you guys like Weezer who I think are that level above amoeba.

mock rock nothing. i think it has a lot to do with the fact that they don't care about popularity...they just want to play music. did you read the article in rolling stone? they were appalled (sp?) by the fact that they were playing the MTV movie awards. it's just in the same way Nirvana was, i guess you could say. they hated the mainstream yet they did mainstream things. i don't think any of us would be any different. if i hated mtv, but they asked me to play, sure i'd do it, cause i'll be playing my music to a big audience. i don't know. he wasn't fucking around, maybe he was just making a joke of it. but that's how he performs. |

Just want to say the Hives are wicked rock music. Yes, they are a bit of a Stooges rip off, but that's where the core of Frank's sound originates from. And they do not play standard 4/4 music.. Should give the entire album a replay.

The Hives are cool, but they sound too much like The Ramones for my liking, I saw them just before I left England. They headlined Sheffield Leadmill, but were only playing for about 45 mins which is a bit shit. |

Funny, as I waiting for FB to come on stage last week, the WS was playing over the PA. Some artists choose the 'warmup' music, some dont. So, I dont know if FB had anything to do with it.
I for one really like the White Stripes. I see no Pixies rip off at all. I like the Hives as well. Very good band albiet more than a bit derivitive. The vines bring nothing new to the party for me. So, WS great, Hives good, Vines...No. |

hives- ok WS- I like Strokes- good stuff Vines- fucking eat it!
The Ramones/Hives comparision doesn't work. They don't sound alike. Also the Ramones are too good to be compared to a bunch of swedish amateurs. Amateurs that show promise albeit, but swedish all the same. fucking swedes thinkin' they're gonna take over rock music or something. I am starting a campaign calling for the end of the swedish rock scene.
