In may of 2002 FB&TC was scheduled to come to Lawrence with Tom Waits, the only place I get to see Frank when he tours. The show was 18 and over, and of course, I bought my tickets the day they came out. One week before the show, I called the club (hey, I'm paranoid) to ensure the show was still going on. It was, but the voice on the other end of the phone informed me the show had been changed to 21 and over. I'm under 21, so naturally, my heart was broken and I didn't have enough time to make a fake id. I tried getting in, but it didn't happen. Why was the show changed you ask. Because it was supposedy sponsored by Winston, a motherfucking cigarette company. I was old enough to smoke their product, but not to go to the show. Frank came back last october, but I still haven't gotten over the experience.

i'm pretty sure that tom waits didn't tour in 2002. also: he generally plays larger venues than mr. black - like the beacon in nyc, the wiltern theater in la, the orpheum in boston - that kind of place; all 2000+ seat theaters.

I'm telling you, Tom Waits was there, at the Bottleneck, opening for FB. Of course I couldn't tell you I saw him because I didn't get to go, but that is what it said on my ticket.

tom waits opening for FB? i dunno about that. I don't think he toured at all last year like Mr. Galoof said.
Maybe there was like... a wet t-shirt contest added to the set so that's why it was 21+.

Hey Misterwoe, I feel your pain. One time Robyn Hitchcock was playing in New York, I live at Umass Amherst, I visited my friend who goes to a school in Connecticut, a 100 dollar train ticket, then took a train from there into New York, spent about an hour trying to find the place, then discovered it was 21+. I even bumped into Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo and shook their hand, they were going to the show too. I mean, the main point of my visit was to visit my friend in connecticut, but it still sucked. Needless to say, we missed the subway ride home and had to sleep in the subway...and there are some WEIRD people in the New York subway at 4 in the morning. |

i actually prefer his solo stuff.. JC&D's were pretty overrated and pretentious in my opinion. all that "eat my body" "drink my blood" stuff. it was totally just for shock value.
he definitely matured as a solo artist.

Yeah. And without JC, the disciples were really nothing. I mean that Yoko Iscariot guy was totally after the coin. As far as I;m concerned it was suicide on his part.

Where is Lawrence?
Lawrence, Kansas. I see most of my shows at this small bar called the bottleneck. It is awesome! So many great people have played there. Frank Black comes there all the time, he came twice just last year! Radiohead has even played there, and Ben Kweller is coming in February, that will be awesome.

It's a refreshing surprise to see that under-21 would even be an issue with some Frank fans. That is way cool that it isn't just limited to aging-punk-rocker farts (39) like me.
Maybe next tour that would be something for FB&C to keep in mind though: keep the shows all-ages.

Actually Eileen Rose opened for FB&TC at that show (Lawrence, KS, 5/1/02). She and her band also opened the Chicago shows, Lincoln, and Albuquerque on that tour. Possibly more shows, but I seem to think just those shows for some reason. I was at that Lawrence show and it was ok. I saw Dave Phillips walking around downtown that afternoon matt |

While Tom has certainly embraced the indie spirit with his recent signing to Epitaph, I too found it hard to believe he was supposed to open that show. However, Reid Paley who often tours as a support act for FB is regularly described by booking agents and clubowners as "a more antagonistic Tom Waits", or something to that effect. I wonder if someone confused the comparison with an actual booking? ha ha ha

Frank Black was playing at someplace in Philadelphia, but it was apparently an "18 Over" venue...so I resigned myself to wait the 9 months out and hope he comes through again. |

Hey, maybe I'll see you at Frank's next show at the bottleneck. I'd be more than thrilled if I could buy some live stuff from you. Especially a 10/23/02 recording if you have one. That show rocked. I highly recomend that you check out ben kweller if you're not already going. He'll be at the bottleneck 2/6/03.
