Scorsese rules. This is an excellent movie. As long as we're reccomending movies here, this is a very good film.

I saw it yesterday, and it was pretty good. Good, not great. Worth seeing anyway.

i saw it last night and enjoyed the whole thing. daniel day lewis is great.. Scorsese does an excellent job handling such a huge topic.
i wasn't expecting to like it as much as i did.
could have done without U2 at the end though.

I've heard by two people that it was a sucky movie. I'll wait til it comes out on video.
Sure i haven't seen it and i have nothing to back my claim that it probably sucks, but, no one here that likes it is saying why they liked it. Just that "it was a good movie".
What would Mike, Tom, and Crow think?

proverbial, i don't blame you for not wanting to risk 10 bucks.. (i saw it for free so i lucked out)..
but, to be more specific for you, i liked it because... i didn't know much about that period of US History and I thought the film did an amazing job portraying it. obviously it's a movie, and quite a bit of it is fictionalized, but it does shed light on some pivotal, and often not talked about, moments of US History.. if anything, it got me interested to know a bit more about it (that period of New York / US History).
also, the fight scenes alone are incredible. not that i go to movies just for cool fight scenes, but i thought Scorsese did (as he always does) an excellent job of putting the audience in the middle of the violence. (personally, if i were in that situation i would have been heading to San Francisco at the beginning of the film)..
finally, the characters.. i agree with mike disanto completely. it's worth admission price just for daniel day lewis. he's got to be one of the best (classic) villain characters i've seen in a long ass time. i wouldn't doubt it if he gets a best supporting nomination.
not the best film of the year or anything.. but i would argue worth seeing.. far from sucking, i assure you.. c'mon, it's Scorsese..
who are Tom mike and crow??

alright well you've made me curious enough to want to see it eventually (matinee or on DVD). I do like movies that portray good ole history.
Tom Servo, Mike Nelson, and Crow T. Robot are from Mystery Science Theater 3000.

There's a great movie site called www.rottentomatoes.com that polls nearly every review for a movie and gives you a percentage of good versus bad. It's very handy.

Gangs of New York was a bit too choppy, Cameron Diaz's role was completely superfluous to the story, and the fight scenes were few and far between (although excellent).
Having said that, Daniel Day-Lewis was in EXCELLENT fucking form.

I watched this movie on Thursday, the day after I watched LOTR2 so needless to say the battles sucked in comparison. However Daniel Day Lewis is excellent throughout and I almost wanted him to kill Di Caprio his character was likeable excellently potrayed. The women getting hit in the face was hillarious, downsides to such things however are when there is just me laughing in a packed cinema. Its most certainly not a bad film maybe a little on the lenghty side. The music sucked major ass though, damn the score of that film was awful. |
