this is probably the most biased place to ask this question but my friend and i (he posts on here occasionally) have been this ongoing argument over which band is cooler. I say pixies and he pavement. dont get me wrong, pavement is cool and all, but something about pixies songs make them a lot cooler, i think its that pavement songs tend to ramble a lot, especially the slow ones. but anyway, just curious as to what you guys thing.

think you will probably win the argument on this site - but I could be wrong. I don't really know Pavement, so I feel unqualified to comment. Other than to say, Yay for the Pixies! |

I love em both, but Pavement has a much more diffuse kind of vibe. Pixies always had that highly focused, manic energy. Pavement may have been funnier, but Pixies were more fun. |

I prefer the Pixies, but Pavement has one of the coolest lines I have ever heard :
you've been choosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to your life (from Shady Lane)

I love that line from Shady Lane, along with "a redder shade of neck on a whiter shade of trash . . . " |

I love Pavement too, but I'll say Pixies because the Pixies did in 5 years what it took Pavement 10. And Frank could sing laid back (so could malk), he could sing pretty (so could malk) and he could SCREAM (Malk has some trouble here). Incidentally, I think Pavement sort of took over the king-indie throne, as Slanted came out right after Trompe Le Monde. |

Okay, I'm not sure if I want to get into the cooler or not cooler debate, but, ultimately I think the Pixies and Pavement are almost the same band for several reasons and because of this they are two of the most important bands to record in recent memory.
On the hard side there are the Pixies who spawned the flannel revolution. On the lighter, more exparamental, side are Pavement who gave rise to Psudo-Intellectual Alternative (don't get me wrong Pavement can rock)...
There really isn't a point in getting into the whole "look how influencial the Pixies are debate" because there are several threads which say this all over the site. The Pixies did their thing and created their own style which was picked up and simulated by other groups... Therefore, in other band's sounds the sound of the Pixies is already present and the course of music has benefitted through this influence.
As for pavement, they pretty much did the same thing but in a different genra/style of music and I think they are just as influencial on several levels because of this.
Pavement is more lo-fi and poppy than the Pixies... their lyrical constructions are different than the pixies. Their sound completely different than the Pixies (interestingly enough Pavement were using Petal Steel on Wowee Zowee- 95) and unique to themselves (also like to mention the two drummer thing... brilliant). Imagine the other less Rocking side of alternative without Pavement? Would there be a Weezer(I would argue weezer is Pavement's Nirvana)?
Thus, if you look to the curent state of "Alternative Music" (as if there still is an Alternative Music...or ever was) I think there are two bands that paved the way for the others which followed... The Pixies and Pavement. They didn't pave the road through commercial sucess but rather by changing the demension of the game and sounds found in the rehlm of music. This inspiration and excellent ability to make interesting music promted others to take suit.
Music has sounded better and our hair has been smaller ever since.
So, I guess I look at them as two sides of the modern musical coin... and while you might identify with one side more, and think they are cooler because of it, you can't detract from the influnce of the other side... For me, this is where much of the value of the Pixies and Pavement reside... two amazing bands that did amamzing things...
If you made it through this huge post thanks... sorry if it is riddled with spelling errors (I know it is). Have though writing on this posit for a while and glad I finally did.
Take Care
Mike

Mike, you made a lot of sense. You must have given this a lot of thought, so I don't mind the spelling errors :)

Wowee Zowee is about as good as a midgrade Frank Black album, I guess. Haven't heard the other Pav albums. |

Wowee Zowee is the worst--recommend Crookedraincrookedrain or Slanted and Enchanted.
Right on, St. Francis.
(From a purely bar-brawl perspective, I have to say that Pixies would doubtless have kicked Pavement's skinny white ass. Black Francis would have hurled his sturdy bulk at Malkmus with a shriek, knocking him down and biting him in the face. The rest of them would have looked from Kim's menacingly serene smile to Joey's crazed eyes and hit the ground running. That's how I figure it would have gone down, anyway.) |

Um..did you ever write for the WWWF website?
It'd be funny to mass-email them and try and get them to host a band competition, this P vs P fight would be awesome...!! |

Other thing about Pavement is I think their output wasn't pound-for-pound with the Pixies. Their freer, more layered sounds meant lots of filler or really cool songs with lame parts. The Pixies had their moments of imperfection, but Pavement seemed to write and record whatever the hell that came out of their brains.

thank you john dietzel! thats exactly what i dont ilke about pavement but i couldnt really word it. there seem like a lot of parts on albums or in songs where they are just rambling and it gets annoying. pixies songs were trimmed down and generally short so you heard exactly what you wanted.

Thanks for your oppinion but again if you read the first line of my post you will see that "I didn't want to get into the cooler not cooler debate".
Personally I like all Pavement's albums and like their music a lot. I still think they are as influential (creating a new style and bringing something new to the table) as the Pixies on several levels.
Johnny, can understand your point, but, I like the layers, the way they all end up flowing together. Can listen to Pavement for days... Lyrically Francois and Stevie both seem to like obscurity. Anyone ever see Pavement? Wicked live!
That's it thanks for respoding to my contrabution to the post!

St. Francis My comment was neither a direct response to your post nor contrived to fuel a "which band is cooler" debate, which I'd obviously have no place in given my overall ignorance regarding Pavement's musical works. I was merely offering my genuine opinion of Wowee Zowee, an overlong, sloppy, but somewhat enjoyable indie-rock album. I do appreciate your input, though.
Mere Ubu Thanks for the tip! I can tell from reading your post on the "life-changing albums" thread that you're a bit of an underground music connoisseur. =) |

If Pixies and Pavement were individual people then Pixies would win hands down in a celebrity death match.... Pavement are good, but Pixies are a league above... |
