Hi All,
My brother has just lent me his computer with internet access and a cd burner, so I am avidly downloading songs from the various music stuff on the net. Not to be crude but getting hold of free and previously unavailable music has a similar kind of feeling to when I first discovered the pleasures of.... ahem...... at the tender age of ten. Can't stop myself at the moment.... from downloading music that is.
Right, the main point of this email is that I have located a few FB / Pixies tunes that I have never heard of.
Rocketship - Sang by Kim Deal, or thats what it sounds like and credited to Pixies.
You look so fine - Credited to Frank Black... downloading at the mo so I cannot listen to the song.
The get up kids - Credited to Pixies, actually this is either an early version of Alec Eiffel, or a cover version as it sounds a little weird.
You look so fine - Credited to Frank Black.
Can anyone shed any light onto these??? By the way I have found these on KaZaA.....
Cheers
Stuart
p.s. Please can someone send me an idiots guide to getting onto the FTP thing as I want to download the FB gigs. Ive read Daves thing in the FTP section but need to get myself an FTP download from the Download website.... I have a cd burner and not an MP3... does this mean that I cannot download the gigs?? Its a little scarey, I actually got a 2:1 in Business Information Systems at Uni, but I haven't got a clue when it comes to computers. A reply on this one would be very very welcomed. |

I had a feeling that The Get Up Kids was a cover version as it doesn't sound too much like Black Francis' voice. |

Ten times out of nine these are just mislabled (intentionally or not) tracks. I have never downloaded what I expected to be a "new" or "unknown" Pixies/Frank track, to learn that it's the real deal. Has anyone here had any success?
I assume you are quite familiar with Frank's sound. Have a few listens and it should be pretty obvious.

Yeah, I think you're going to find that those other songs are just mislabeled.
I recently came across a song called "Colleen (Pixies Song)" by the guy from Sifyl and Ollie. It's just that, it actually sounds like a lost Pixies song circa Doolittle, down to the lyrics and voice and everything. It just sort of made me realize how weird it would be to hear a new Pixies album for the first time. I should have saved one for years down the road to listen to. |

Ive just gone back on KaZaA again and found a couple more songs credited to Frank Black.... one called Mexican Radio, and another called Draw Attention.... I am actually listening to Draw Attention as I write this and it sounds like Frank Black, vocally and musically. Its an accoustic like demo, a little rough sounding but pretty good.
I know what you mean about mislabelled songs, that kind of stuff always happens when you buy bootlegs, its a right pain in the arse..... especially if you are a Cure fan.
Anyway, has anyone heard of Draw Attention??? |

Just found a song called Blowout, which is supposed to be a Pixies acoustic song. The guy who I am steeling it from is named as Joe Santiago.... probably just a sign in name like the numerous ones on this site, but being a bit of a dick Ive half convinced myself that I'm nicking a tune off of the man himself. |

I once downloaded Mexican radio - it purported to be by Frank, but it was the Wall of Voodoo song, there was no way it was Frank on the vocals. |

I just downloaded Particle Man, which says FB ft TMBG.... but it was all TMBG, which was abit of a pisser. These internet music things are pretty good when you can actually download songs that do not cut off halfway through the download / and are actually what they say they are... I should be grateful though as Ive got a few FB songs that are virtually impossible to find here in the UK. |

I bet the one you got (like the Electric Ladyland 1993 recording) is from a show at which both TMBG and Frank played, and it was labeled accordingly. People often encode an entire album to MP3 at once, which leaves the ID3 info of artist/album the same for all the tracks. I did once download a really poor recording of Frank singing on "Particle Man," so it does exist.

The Get Up Kids is a crappy emo band who covered that song on a mediocre tribute album to the Pixies.
Not familiar with the You Look So Fine thing.
I'm betting that Rocketship is actually a track by the former lead singer of Austin's Glass Eye. She did a cover of a Daniel Johnston song by the same name on a FANTASTIC album called Dead Dog's Eyeball for the Bar/None label.
Rush out and buy it immediately if you can locate a copy.
The production on that track is a bit Pixiesh, and her vocals have an effect on them like Kim seems to enjoy using on Amps/Breeders material.
Somebody probably didn't know who it really was and made a decent guess when naming the track.
Hope this helps.

Return of la Radiator,
Good to see you back dude... glad you are still posting here...
I have a question... Is the record industry so interested in splitting genres into smaller cohorts to ease marketing that there is now a new catagory of music called EMO? Always found the Clash emotional are they the origional EMO band... Will their punk status erode?? Is Iggy the godfather of Emo now?
Had to mention this cause you did Pete and also because I was talking to a younger kid in the hood and he said: "I'm into emo music" and I was like "oh yeah... what's that" and he was like "It's like punk but just a bit more emotional" and I was like "Right...".

Speaking of rare, seldom-heard Pixies song...has anyone heard the Pigface b-side "Dog"? It's been credited to Black Francis, and it does contain his trademark howl. Sounds like a Pixies song, at least to my untrained ear. |

Well, Emo sounds winy; like, my girlfriend dumped me, boohoohoo...it's guys who are sensitive, (hence, Emo-tional), yet try to be punk, (more like, I have red-hair!)...it's pop punks answer to n-sync, and backstreet boys.
People who like Emo are into Sunny Day Real Estate, Get Up Kids, Weezer, and Hot Water Music. Not all Emo bands suck, just in general they do. BTW...the genre has been around for years, and I doubt the big bad "INDUSTRY" came up with the term...the only reason you just heard about it is cause Time magazine printed a story on it. |

Thanks for the kind words.
The whole emo thing is hogwash. Weezer struck a chord (pun intended) with a bunch of latchkey malcontents who felt like they finally had permission to rock out a la the garage sequence in "Welcome To The Dollhouse". The truth was, they'd always had permission. Now everyone with a homemade haircut and a silver studded belt wants to whine and mope "while they barre chord".
Jumping around a lot and muting your cymbals with your hands won't trick me into thinking you're any more sincere than Elvis Costello or Sonny Vincent.
And while we're on the subject, pretending you love Jesus just to hitch a ride on that crass gravy train known as the "alternative-indie-Christian-punk movement" may get you plenty of high-dollar bookings at church youth centers and vacation bible camps, but sooner or later they're gonna catch you with your corduroys around your ankles behind the chapel.
Man, I hate emo.
Is anyone still reading this? Why haven't you bought that Kathy McCarty album yet?

Sunny Day Real Estate has some pretty great stuff... I find using the term "Emo" to categorize music really silly, considering the soul purpose of most music is to effect peoples emotions. If you think certain music sounds whiny, then its just that, whiny. Therefore its not doing anything for you emotionally (except for annoying you) so it should NOT be called Emo, it should be called Annoying. |

Blowout is an excellent song by Radiohead, off the album The Bends, in electric form. The reason it is so often attributed to the pixies is that an acoustic version with Thom Yorke and the Posies appeared as a radio bootleg. An early and careless Napster user changed Posies to Pixies, and the legend lives on.

If that's the case, we should've stopped categorizing music, and just stuck with plain ole "music". Anyway, I didn't invent the term, I was just explaining...you know? |

'Born in Chicago' is a Paul Butterfield Blues Band cover. It appeared on Electras' 40th anniversary disc named 'Rubaiyat'; Electra artists covered a song recorded by former Electra artists. Metallica covered 'Stone Cold Crazy' by Queen; 10,000 Maniacs covered a Jackson Browne tune and so on. . . I think I got it from a trade years ago. Prolly about 10-11yrs ago. I'm so old! |

The real title you're looking for is "Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day." The song is by Doug Sahm, "King of Tex Mex." The recording you have sounds like it's the radio show recording with him and his acoustic. The other popular version is the full band version which appears on the "EP" with the same title. Check the FAQ at the top of this forum for more info. |

Hee-hee. Lest we forget, the Dead Milkmen also recorded a cover of Johnston's "Rocketship" on 1987's BUCKY FELLINI, although I seriously doubt that their angelic little voices could ever be mistaken for Kim's, whose is in a decidedly lower register. (K. McCarty appears on this album as well singing backup for "Instant Club Hit.")
Apropos of nothing (but the above references, I suppose), I saw one of the very last Glass Eye shows and still mourn their passing. My GE t-shirt is on its very last threads and will most likely not make it through the Spring. I'll have to bury it in the backyard next to the last hamster . . :-( |
