It seems like a logical topic - What CDs are in your cp-player/computer/radio right now?
In my car, there's 6 CD changer with the following:
1. Frank Black and the Catholics, Devil's Workshop - no comment needed
2. Blues Traveller, Blues Traveller - pretty good folk-rock band. For people who like nice rock tunes with lots of harmonica, fold, country, blues and even a little gospel, BT is a good choice. They're pretty straightforward, but in a pretty cool way, and they write some excellent hooks (prime examples: 'But Anyway', 'Drop it on NYC').
3. Compilation CD: starts off with the White Stripes's Suger Never Tasted So Good and ends with J.J.Cale's Cocain. Highlights in the middle include the Stones's Brown Sugar, Tom Waits with 'goin' out west', Frank Black's Tossed (WITH lyrics - way better than the instrumental version in my opinion), covers of Bob Dylan (Blind Willie McTell, by the band, good but not as good as the original), the Velvet Underground (There She Goes by the Pagans - great performance but suboptimal sound quality) and Leonard Cohen (Joe Cocker's groovy I'm Your Man). It also includes some real blues by Muddy Waters ('the Blues had a baby...') and R.L.Burnside ('Catfish Blues')
4. Alex Chilton, Live in London - really great songs. The band is absymal, but they improvise with style, and the record is a winner in my opinion. If you like Hard Rockin' with good Pop tunes, and some really fun hooks, this is a great album - the only Chilton/Big Star I have, I must cofess.
5. Van Morrisson, 'The Best of van Morrison' - I may go out to see a couple of his concerts, so I'm giving it a listen. I generally like it alot. 'Gloria' is absolutely thrilling, of course.
6. John Cale with Strings, Art Project Munich - John Cale and a string quartet, plus a guitarist on some tracks. Pretty similar to his brilliant live album 'Fragments of a Rainy Season', and containing great versions of 'Fear is a man's best friend', and the Leonard Cohen cover Hallelujah.
Recent CDs that went through my rotations: Leonard Cohen, Field Commander Cohen and I'm Your Man, Jacques Loussier 'Play Bach III', bob Dylan 'Oh Mercy', Fugazy 'The Argument'.
To come: Red Hot Chilli Peppers (not sure which one - something like Blood/Sugar/Money), The best of Dr. John, and John Fogerty, Premonition[live].

Listening now to Sibelius' "The Maiden in the Tower"...
Current favorites include lots of FB and FB&C (self-titled, BLD, DitS, and homemade comps with B-sides and stuff), Oingo Boingo's "Farewell Live", Optiganally Yours' "Exclusively Talentmaker!", just about anything by Kristin Hersh and Haydn sonatas by Sviatoslav Richter.
Sorry, but you asked... :-)

Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 is very good, btw. (I'm not kidding, I love Classical)
I'm into Wilco and The Wallflowers right now, besides the obvious FB&TCs, FB, and the Pixies. Also Rich's Coronet Premiers CD. All instrumental, and for me peaceful. I need peace...

I am all about the new Aimee Mann right now (LOST IN SPACE) - which is funny because at first I didn't like it as much as her other stuff. There is a song on there called THE MOTH which is just beautiful and lyrically she can't be beat.
On my five hour busride on Monday I listened to that, Sinead O'Connor's SO FAR...THE BEST OF, BLACK LETTER DAYS, Billy Bragg and this band called RED ZONE CUBA that this boy I know is the drummer for.

Is the band named Red Zone Cuba after that hilarious Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode?
My favorite new band that's out right now is Clinic, I think they're amazing. |

I believe it was a movie FIRST, but yeah, I bet it was also on Mystery Science Theater since they feature such horribly funny films. You could check out their (the bands) website @ www.redzonecuba.net - their song ANIMAL SHELTER is especially good and my drummer friend is CUUUTE. If you are into that sorta thing... |

Also, glad to see there are others interested in classical. Someday I'll start a classical topic in here! I was so thrilled to see Sibelius mentioned on the FB forum... ha! I thought I was the only one who knew about him... he's not the most popular composer!

Classical music rocks! I got an Erik Satie cd for xmas. I've been getting into pretty stuff like Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, and Delibes' Flower Duet (featured in the Simpsons.. montage as Homer rises to become a successful boxer). GÓRECKI Symphony No. 3 'Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs' is quite nice too.. it seems many rock stars like it. Oh, and I'll always love Peter and The Wolf. |

That's very cool. It's been awhile since I broke out any of my classical, but all this talk has peaked my interest again!
And yes, Moonlight is extremely pretty.
I saw the Moody Blues once with the NJ Symphony Orchestra. Now that was incredible. I do hope that someday Frank does the symphony thing like he's been saying he wants to!
Speakng of which, I was just recently at a party and they had the Moody Blues DVD on. I'd forgotten how much I loved them (and my crush on Justin Hayward!!). And who here remembers Blue Jays which was just Justin Hayward and John Lodge????

Yeah, both SOOOO good. It is really incredible how much amazing music is out there. Like I said on some other thread (Henhouse? I am not sure) - I think music is a whole other language and you either get it or you don't. I am so happy to be here with people who get it.
Another thing I am listening too lately is the new live Paul McCartney - I saw the tour and am reliving it with my Beatle maniac mother. Tis the season. |

Though I'm no expert, I like classical music too, I'll probably like it a lot more in 10 years. But that just reminded me of this awful interview on the Carson Daily Last Call show with John Cleese. John Cleese was musing about the differences in music tastes between his daughter and himself, about how she liked rap and he likes classical because it emotionally affects him. Then genius Carson quipped "see, we find classical boring" speaking for HIS generation, Carson just speaking for the rest of us, how our generation hates classical but loves hip hop. Argh, then he went on to name a bunch of hip-hop acts to sound cool, even though it's pretty obvious Carson suffers from "white man's guilt" and is just pretending to be contemporary. |
