When was the last time you used a high strung (or Nashville tuned) acoustic guitar on a record? I love that sound.
Hatchetman
For those of you who don't know what Nashville tuning is, I copied this from a website:
What is Nashville tuning?
Nashville tuning, also known as "high-strung guitar," is often used to create a 12-string effect when layering guitars in a multi-track studio. Essentially, it uses the octave strings of a 12-string set on a six-string guitar. The first two strings (high E and B) remain unchanged, while the lowest four strings (G through low E) are tuned an octave above standard tuning. To my knowledge, there is no ready-made set for this tuning available, so you either have to rob a 12-string set or assemble your own from your music store’s single-string bin. The gauges for a medium set would be as follows (high to low): .012, .016, .010, .014, .020, .030. All strings are unwound, except for the low E.

Lyle used to (still does?) play a Tele with a G bender that Frank gave to him, I think.

its cool how in whispering weeds you hear mostly pick scrape noise from the acoustic (assumedly the one you were talking about). it adds a cool rhythmic effect i guess you would call it.
oh frank, what kinda strings do you use? i dont see your name on the back of the ernie ball packs:)

Although I would be slightly weary of tuning up an octave because of the extra pressure, but if you used lighter gauge it would presumably not matter. hrmmm now I want to try it |

Re: Nashville tuning. Actually you don't tue up your strings an octave, what you do is use all light guages, like the high string from a 12-string set. |

has anyone ever tried tuning down a half or whole step and then using a capo to bring it back to normal tuning. the advantaged being the supirior action of a capo'd acoustic. a lot of cheaper acoustics have pretty terrible action and i guess this would work. noone ever uses the really high notes any way so you wouldnt miss 2 of them

There's a local band around here that does that, but not for increased action. Although, I'm not so sure that it would even increase the action, or to a beneficial extent. |

well i noticed on my acoustic when you put the capo on the 3rd or 4th, the action is significantly increased. the actual distance isnt decreased by much, but just that little bit makes it so mcuh easier to play.

I dunno about you guys, but when i capo my guitar using normal tuning, I have to retune the G and B strings. I think i just maybe need to get a guitar checkup and adjust the neck and crud.

yah sounds like the intonation is a bit whacked, or you have old strings but im guessing youve noticed this over a period of time and different packs of strings

Yeah, on the capo thing for better action, except that you can permanently lower it easily too (der). And the capo of course makes your neck shorter and mucks with your memory of what each fret will get you. But like with my acoustic it has a higher action cause if not, it buzzes on hard strums.
So does anyone know if it's common/safe to tune up on especially the smooth strings? With a cut or two on my arms and neck and a few brushes with near-blindness, I always thought it wasn't practical to try to tune your B to a C or whatever. Then a buddy of mine just did it one time (I thought out of ignorance) and it seemed fine.

haha.. i often joke with myself that Frank forgets how to play his own songs and has to use my tabs to recall the chords. It's a funny thought...

I guess time has worked on me, I've cast aside my stubborness and joined frankblack.net. The instant-gratification factor is much higher than that of yahoogroups, which makes weekdays at a desk a little more tolerable for wannabe-closet-rock-stars like myself. Dave, can I choose the title under my name or is that something I have to earn by repeat-posting?

i heard once that the REM guys once bought an REM songbook to play some old songs they didn't remember. and that on a concert that frank was playing some pixies stuff somebody asked for Bone Machine and he said that he didn't remember the lyrics. |

Hey Eric - in truth, i CAN change your title to a custom one, but if i start to offer free titles to one person, i need to do it for everyone...i don't wanna go editing 300+ titles!
It does change as your number of postings goes up. =)
I've been reserving custom titles for our friend Charles, and the major site contributors.
However, there's nothing that the right amount of cash can't fix. =)

Well, I did contribute a cover, but I can't claim credit in any form for the man's music, so what if I contributed graphics? I am a graphic artist by trade you know? I have one I'm particularly proud of on my workstation at home. Can I send it to you, if for no other reason, for your opinion, but potentially for your site's unrestricted use? Of course I'd be honored if you did like it enough to use it.
:)

As I recall on their first unplugged special they had to get the lyrics to End of the World as We Know It off the internet. Funny stuff.
