Although I don't make good recordings, they are good enough for me, sometimes. But are there a few simple points people can offer, like some "basic principles" of home puter recording with no special sound card and no mixing board and maybe a pre-amp and some fx pedals? That and suggestions for a simple/effective way to get a drum track behind the music. Anything from real-time thumping on keys to programming a software drum machine or something. For starters, here's what I am doing/trying-

  • Mic'd acoustic guitar, percussion, vocals through a cheap RadioShack pre-Amp and directly into N-Track
  • Tried plugging in electric guitar through pre-Amp and/or fx pedal with bad results, and tried mic'ing an an amp (yikes)
  • Just now getting ready to try out sound fonts for possibly drumkits and maybe a few reed instruments and some percussion ones
  • Attempted creating drum sequence with Elements Drum Machine (with no success)
  • Gonna try to plug in a midi keyboard to use it for input of the samples (?)
  • Tried and use many different WAV editors -- any rules-of-thumb or basic suggestions for must-use filters or processing settings, maybe dependent on sound medium?

Thanks.

i just plug everything directly into the line in of my subpar soundcard. no preamp (though i probably need one) and it still works pretty well. i use cooledit which is a pretty modest sound editor, but it works. as far as drums you can use anything that can save as a wave, even cakewalk if you wanna do midi drums, as long as you can save it to a wav file you can insert into cool edit or any program.

I think you're better off doing it the other way round. Save your guitars, etc as wavs and then insert those in the MIDI software. That way, you can still easilly change the drums.

I actually use an MPC2000 for sequencing and sampling, an E-mu Pk-6 (Proteus 2000 keys version) for piano, organ and some drum sounds, a very poor quality electric guitar which I record direct (doesn't sound very good, should get a sansamp or POD thingie I guess) and an Ibanez Bass. I record it all on a DPS-12. I would recommend all of this gear, it's great home studio stuff.
