Hey, what have you guys learned at Rock and Roll High School? I know I'm not the only person who listens to Frank because it gives your brain something to do. At certain benumbed points in my life, the lyrics have been an impetus to find out some new info. I appreciate the man's curiosity. Over the years I've looked up stuff about Biosphere II, a lot of things concerning Mars and what should be done with it, the Los Angeles aqueduct system, the St. Francis dam disaster, the Humboldt County massacre, the establishment of each of the 21 missions, the Bear Flag Revolt, Father Altamira, Llano del Rio, the half-bird Hindu god Garuda, and Lord knows what else. I know what enthymeme and pellagic mean. Is it just me, or is this half of the fun? |

in one of the recent interviews he answers a question about heloise and talks a bit about his song writing process, he also addressed a similar question about the st. francis dam disaster. i gather that he doesn't just know most of this stuff off the top of his head, but in the process of writing does a little (very little) research.
i know the johns of TMBG do similar things. |

Good point, Ebb. Maybe it's the fact that some research goes into the writing that makes the songs so satisfying to decode.
Speaking of the Johns, my kid's been listening to "No" all day and singing about the Thomas Edison museum. Now that's infotainment! |

i bought a really really big dictionary in preparation for BLD and DW.....but to my surprise, there werent any words that i didnt know the meaning of......i really enjoy FB's recent trend towards rootsy music.....however, i have no new words i can work into conversation and impress my friends with.....such as, "my, i love the way you [juxtaposed] these beans with the rice"...or..."boy, this caffeine is rendering me [unsomnabulous]" .... well i better stop depending on frank black songs as my only source of culture.... |
