It was definately a great find. Having it on a Japanese cartoon movie soundtrack makes it even more obscure and interesting.

They made video for some of the "lesser" songs on Powerpuff Girls cd (Apples in Stereo), and they play them all the time on Cartoon Network. I wish they had one for "Pray For the Girls." And I wish it had Frank in it. And I wish they played it all the time.

That is a great tune. I told my wife I was buying the soundtrack for my daughter but her and my daughter both knew the real reason why I had to run out and buy it.

Was Pray For The Girls also recorded live to two track?

There was discussion about wether Pray For The Girls was or wasn't. Harris? eventually cleared it up. Apparently it was recorded during the DITS sessions and is also recorded live to two track.

powerpuff girls is hardly japanese and in no way obscure. also, i've heard the song on the cartoon network on powerpuff girls commercials before. that was awesome.
wow. if that's live to 2 track...amazing.

Thanks Malax. It would make sense if it was recorded during the DITS sessions since that is the best live to 2 track recording Frank has made to date. It does have an incredible sound.

Thanks.

Yeah, I remember because I made a total fool of myself. I read at pitchforkmedia.com that it was his first song done with overdubs since Cult of Ray, so I tried to be all suave on the board about "how interesting it is" because of all that, then Harris gave us the real deal.

Um, something off of Cult of Ray? No, seriously, I have a question. I know the two new albums are live to 2-track, but I can't help but feel that there's some multi-tracking going on on the song Black Letter Days. Either that or the Catholics are getting mighty good at singing just like c.t. in the background. (I refer to the spoken echoes of "don't cry, don't start, don't fret your poor heart.") Anyway, just wondering.

Let the attack begin!

well i dont think they really are trying to dupe us into thinking its all 2 track when there really is some multitracking going on. from the sound of their setup, multitracking really isnt even an option

I don't mean to imply we're being duped--I'm just impressed. What do you think the last multi-track song was?

Would it be Manitoba? Seeing as it is on a movie soundtrack. Just guessing?!

It is my understanding that The Cult of Ray was recorded multi-track using a sixteen-track analog deck. If memory serves it was cut at the same studio where they did the first self-titled Catholics record. For that eponymous album they used the same facility, but employed an old 2-track "mastering" deck as their source machine.

The studio (I think it was Sound City) had a long and interesting past and wonderful room sound, and many classic albums were tracked there throughout the years. Frank told me that he and his band rehearsed for something like six hours a day, five days a week for ten weeks, and then rolled their gear a block or so down the street from their rehearsal space to the studio and tracked the whole thing in either two or three days. Most album cuts were first takes, while a few took as many as three to get right. I also believe there are two splices (old-school razor cuts) on the "Indian" album, and one on Pistolero.

I hope this info helps.

Happy New Year...

p.s. As always, let's all please keep striving to maintain a certain decorum and maturity on this site. I'd hate to see the whole thing degenerate into sophmoric humor, misguided posturing and –worst of all– hateful ranting, as it has been threatening to do lately. I've gotten a great deal of joy and insight out of this forum, and look forward to partcipating in it for years to come.

it has to be something totally unsuspected.. Manitoba seems like a good guess.

i'm going to go with "Run" though, which he recorded for Gordon Gano's album. just to take a stab..

i heard there was only one splice [edit] on DITS. not to split hairs.

Maybe "Man of Steel" was the last multitracked song? Hmm, I dunno when that was recorded though.

This thread is old, but I'm fairly certain that it says in the DITS booklet that there are no edits

I agree with Derek.

I was thinking Man Of Steel was the last song Frank recorded multi track. I wouldn't count Run since it isn't a "Frank" recording.

i love "pray for the girls."

since i love the powerpuff girls, too, i had to have the cd. the fact that the actual cd is hot pink is also an added bonus. i'm retarded.

anyway, how can someone not love that song? it's so great. what are the complaints about it?

Our 4-year old "stole" my copy of "Heroes and Villains" (the CD which Pray comes from). I have to admit, her favorite is "Go Monkey Go" from Devo (which warms my heart as well for a number of reasons), but she knows I like Pray, therefore she has decided she likes it too.

They DID make a video for Pray, but they rarely show it, instead I keep seeing the one from the Apples in Stereo, which to me is really grating -- it's that guy's voice, and the song is mediocre to boot. Ugh. I can't even remember what the Pray video looks like, its been so long since they ran it.

It's not a demo. The CD is titled "Heroes and Villians" and its a compiliation of songs about, or inspiried by The Powerpuff Girls. Artists were selected mainly by the series' creator, Craig McCracken. Its available on Amazon, and anybody with a girl under 10 who is at all hip has one in their house (why I waited so long to get mine I can't tell you). Cartoon Network has commissioned videos for many of the songs and they run them every now and then throughout their broadcast day. They've done this with some of their ohter in-house cartoons, my current favotires are "My Best Friend Plank" (Ed Edd and Eddy) -- can't remember the artist, "Courage" from They Might be Giants, and "Hey Johnny Bravo" from who else but the Reverend Horton Heat. I'm anxiously waiting for Cartoon Network to put a comp of all of these out on CD as well, but right now the PPGs are the only ones they've released this with.
