Ah, the dominant sevenths.
Ok, I'll give it a shot:
1 - put your first finger on the first fret of the 2nd string. 2 - put your second finger on the second fret of the 4th string. 3 - put your third finger on the third fret of the 5th string. 4 - put your fourth finger on the third fret of the 3rd string. Strum all 6 strings. You can also get a richer sound by placing your thumb on the third fret of the 6th string, but of course this will depend on your style of playing. Some people use the thumb, some don't.
So, in effect, the notes you are playing, are E,C,B flat, E,C,G. (top to bottom order) Does this make ANY sense?? Good luck, Zan

Of course, you could just look at BLT's link too, prolly much more easy to understand!!

Holy music theory Zan! Nice one.
And for the Cliff Notes version... just play a C and put your pinky on the G string at the 3rd fret :)

Ironically, everyone has described the same thing. =P
Let me add another version, based on a barred A..
X 3 5 3 5 3
I'll leave the (easier) barred E version for someone else.. Anyone gonna dare use a 'G' formation? =P |

two ways to play C7 on the eighth fret. i think the other way dave was talking 'bout.
e--8-- <--C note b-11-- <--Bb note (#2) g--9-- <--E note d--8-- <--Bb note (which makes the chord "seventh") a-10-- <--G note e--8-- <--C note
or e--8- b--8- g--9- d--8- a-10- e--8-
Note: I'm at college now and i don't have a guitar in front of me. so if i'm wrong, sorry!

You could go really crazy and play the barred C7 on the 12th fret too...i don't think most people have enough fingers to pull that one off tho...heh.. |
