We have the dumbest movie post - what do people think was the best movie they saw this year?
I vote for Far From Heaven, which I can't stop thinking about.
Also the Royal Tennenbaums, which I just saw this year - although I think it came out last....
girlie so groovy I want you to know... |

Well, even though it came out in 2001 I'll list it.
"El Espinazo del Diablo" (The Devil's Backbone)
It has bombs, ghosts, the spanish revolution, and sex with an amputee.
Culture.

I saw goodfellas for the first time over Thanksgiving and, well, it was amazing! Gotta be in my top five!

Liked Royal Tannenbaums a lot. Also liked The Ring -contrary to previous postings, it scared the shit out of me but I don't like scary movies.
Also saw a foreign film called Siberia which takes place in Amsterdam and it was excellent. There is a movie called Nora (I think) about James Joyce's wife and it was really good too.

Really liked Royal Tenenbaums too. All those Wes Anderson movies have a nice magic realist feel. Didn't notice when I was watching it that all the walls were painted pink, but that night I had the happiest, most peaceful dreams and they were all set in pink rooms--realized later that they came from the movie. Ah, the subconscious. I don't even want to know what that means.
Everything I like is probably already a year old--I don't get to see stuff til it comes out on video what with the high cost of babysitting these days. Loved Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Amelie. Amores Perros is good. Just saw Y Tu Mama Tambien (but for God's sake, don't anyone watch it with YOUR mamas!) and it was great. Sad, though. |

I love Royal, seen it like 20 times now. Chasing Amy or Clerks is my all time fav. granted I love the classics but these movies speak to me.

Y Tu Mama Tambien is a fantastic movie. I lived for 3 years in Mexico and this movie meant so much to me. I like the fact that it gives a very realistic image of the country (as opposed to 99% of the movies taking place there... see Traffic for instance). My fave movie this year: DePalma's Femme Fatale.

Also love Chasing Amy - Jason Lee is hysterical! |

Tennenbaums came out last year.. but still a great film (though RUSHMORE is still his masterpiece)..
i think this year has been one of the worst movie years in a long time. i'm pretty disgusted with this year. Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN or ONE HOUR PHOTO were the most impressive so far. i'm still waiting to see GANGS OF NEW YORK, ADAPTATION and MORVERN CALLAR (by Lynne Ramsay who did RATCATCHER).. and this film RABBIT PROOF FENCE is supposed to be good.. overall though, i've given up hope on this year. i don't even think i'll be able to come up with a top 10.

Maybe some of the folks who were unhappy with Signs were like me. I went into it thinking "oh boy, oh boy--it's night shyamalan's next movie" and just ended up shaking my head for most of the movie. It only took him three major releases to revert to Hollywood convention. I mean, it was a pretty good treatment for an ET movie, but how terribly predictable and contrived. There wasn't enough reason to keep watching for me. I love Unbreakable and Sixth Sense.
I liked Minority Report and even Bourne Identity, both of which turned out to be pretty tight action-packed adventure type movies. Minority was more sci-fi and complexish, but Identity was just a fun ride.
Best movie of all time: Fletch.
Speaking of Wes Anderson (fair segway: the chick in 6th sense also in rushmore), I saw Bottlerocket for the first time (on Comedy Central of all places) and it reminded me of a few things. It was part Catcher in the Rye and part the song "Vamos". I guess I just always had this picture and romantic yearning associated with the "that maid Maria . . . " line in the song, and when I saw Bottlerocket, it was pretty close to what I had had in my head for all those years.
And there's something about Luke Wilson that makes me at least want to look into this whole homosexuality fad. Like I wouldn't mind being his pal, but I find myself wanting my wife to be in love with him, like vicariously. So I can just smile and nod whilst she says "dreaaaaaaamy".
Oh yeah, so the scene(s) where the guy was justifying his delinquency to his baby sis just totally made me think of Pheobe Caulfield from CitR.
Die Another Day was a nightmare for both the James Bond purist and the guy who hates bad movies. Double whammy.

Yeah, I defy anyone to see Royal Tennenbaums (especially the suicide scene) and not feel SOMETHING for Luke Wilson. I have to warn all my friends before they see it "okay, be prepared to LOVE Luke Wilson..." |

Maybe he means the sudden serge of homosexuality in pop culture(?), ala Will & Grace, etc. Personally I think it's great, but that could just be me. |

Best piece of graffiti I ever saw:
"My mother made me a homosexual."
then, weeks later, someone writes underneath it:
"If I buy her the material, will she make me one too?"

It's like skating was in the late 80s. I mean there were some real skaters, and they knew what they were doing. But it caught on big time, and it became cool to be a skater. Right now it's just really cool to be gay. And fads are the things where the guys who were always doing what became the fad--they never changed. Like Black Francis wore this shirt "I was killing before killing was cool." People like Rock Hudson were gay before being gay was cool. That'a all I mean.

i meant, in relation to Luke Wilson .. it seemed like you were making some connection to Luke Wilson and Tenenbaums and being gay..
as for skateboarding. i skated in the late 80's, and i guess you could say it was a fad, but it's never really been accepted by mainstream whatever until recently really.. with the lame integration into "extreme sports" on ESPN and shit like that..
skateboarders were very much not liked by the general populace. especially store owners and/or security guards.. i hardly ever skate anymore, but it's pretty ingrained in me. i can't look at a handrail without thinking how great it would be railslide it.. although now you'd say "boardslide"..

Damn, I guess "skaters" are the reason I listen to what I do, and not Michael Jackson. Of course nowadays skate music is what you see on MTV. Kinda sad.
My buddies in junior high were mostly skaters, and I have to admit, I was simply unable to stay on top of a board. So I basically relegated myself to the sidelines. But where I grew up, the cool white kids (maybe I'm thinking 'cool' like punks or something) were all 'skaters', despite their general lack of ability. A few of my buddies were "sponsored" and one of my high school friends is still skating pro.
But it was mostly wearing Airwalks/Vans and having a bowl cut and maybe a Minor Threat or All or Black Flag patch on their bag. I guess you would call them "posers."
Hell, I remember being in a quasi-band and co-writing a marvelous song called 'Blackout'. Had some pretty deep lyrics: "Grab your deck/Hit the terrain/Rolling down the street/Like a speeding train/Bailing of your board/Hitting the street/Landing on your head/Instead of your feet/Blackout/It's all just a dream/Feeling the pain/Hearing yourself scream."
Home-made quarter-pipes. Empty pools. Yeeeeeeeeeeah.

On the movie topic; I just saw LOVELY AND AMAZING. Everyone rent it! And for you boys who think it is a "chick flick" there is a scene with a long stretch of total (female) nudity. Now, go rent it, ya hear? |

i saw this amazing japanese horror movie called "uzumaki" which involved a village becoming obsessed with spiral images that eventually drive them crazy - it was fucking rad! i also really liked bowling for columbine, i am trying to break your heart (wilco movie), harry potter 2 (i'm a dork i know), signs, minority report, road to perdition, and i finally saw citizen kane. i wanted to see but missed punch drunk love and auto focus, and i'm looking forward to the two towers, confessions of a dangerous mind, adaptation and about schmidt. -Brian
