Well, actually what I wanted to say is....
do you THINK David Bowie's Tin Machine was an attempt at the style the Pixies were producing and David Bowie was obviously (and self-statedly) influenced by?
And if so...did they Out-Pixie the Pixies?

I believe that Bowie is on record as saying that the combination of the excitement he received from watching/hearing the Pixies (as well as Sonic Youth), and his dissatisfaction with both the lackluster effort he put forth and the public's response to his Glass Spider album and tour were the impetus for him forming Tin Machine.
It was less about ripping off the Pixies than it was about making a self-conscious and overt attempt to recapture the glorious and devil-may-care attitude of his musical youth, when he threw caution to the wind and didn't give much of a damn what people thought of him. That's why he steadfastly refused to be billed as David Bowie, and insisted on posing for band photos as just another member of the group. it's also why he avoided playing the songs he was already famous for.
The similarity you hear between the two projects is the tangible sense of reckless abandon that is present in both the best moments of the often-reviled Tin Machine, and Frank's old band.
Furthermore, Reeves Gabrels is an entirely different animal than Joey Santiago, and the Sales brothers swing and swagger much more than Deal and Lovering ever did. In at least that respect, the present-day Catholics (in full-on Crazy Horse mode) sound more like Tin Machine than the more regimented Pixies ever could or did.
Plus, the notion of "out-Pixieing" the Pixies is of no consequence.
It's like people constantly searching for the "new Dylan". Artists who somehow create something new and different out of old parts can never be bested at their own game - they can only be flattered, imitated or outright stolen from. I'm better than anyone at being myself as are you, and no one can ever touch the Pixies at that white-hot sliver of rock's pantheon that they stumbled upon and mined all on their own for far too short a time.
But then again, that's just my take on things...

Their version of Debaser on the FTP site blows donkey horn. I haven't liked anything Bowie's done since the Labyrinth soundtrack, though I appreciate him waving the torch for Frank. |

I never meant to say that Tin Machine were BETTER than the pixies.
I can't explain myself any better than the original question. Obviously you'll just do with it what you will.

In retrospect I can see how my first response may have seemed harsh. All apologies if that's the case. Sometimes my innate verbosity clouds the issue!

As cool as the idea behind Tin Machine was, it just does not come close to the bands Bowie was taking inspiration from. The idea seemed too good to be true "bowie making a noisy pixies/sonic youth influenced album?". But as my friend pointed out when we listened to it together "I think Bowie's too musically correct to be able to write chord progressions like the Pixies or Sonic Youth" He's write. You can't fake that type of thing. And Reeves Gabriels guitar wanks all of the place with lame solos, the anti-thesis of what Pixies and Sonic Youth were doing. Still it was a very noble effort, I admire Bowie for it. |
