It seems like I first noticed that with both Missy Elliot jams, "Get Your Freak On" first, then "Work It".

FIrst off let me say that Missy Elliot is one of the most exciting artists to come around in a while. If that Justin Timberlake crap and J-Lo bullshit copies that, it pales in comparison to what she is doing.

Secondly, just as there is a lot of CRAP "guitar bands" out there, there are also the good ones if you find them (ie FB&TC) and the SAME holds true for rap/hip hop.

For example....open your minds to the following small list of artists and you will find that what is going on in some rap circles is tantamount to the exploration and open search for new and interesting sounds not seen since the psychedelic era of Rock and roll in the mid to latter parts of the 60's.

1. OUTKAST - wow, wow, oh my god wow....see "Stankonia"
2. Cee-Lo Green - another wow part II
3. Missy Elliot
4. Nappy Roots
5. Jurrasic 5
6. The Roots

Just a few...also, I know it's not new at all, but if anyone has heard any of that Shuggie Otis stuff, another wow.

This is coming from a guitar guy all the way. If you only try one of those, listen to OUTKAST. Listen to "Stankonia".

i'm ok with the swimmer, some rap artist sound good, but, you're absoultly right mdisanto : rap's videos suck !!!!! always those women who dance like bitches. i mean : is it the real life? is it the most beautifull way to show women???? women for me are not like that ! and that's why i'm always angry when i saw rap's videos.

Try Deltron 3030 too. They're good. And does anyone remember Digable Planets?

i hate to tell you, but rap/hip-hop 'pioneers' rarely do anything that hasn't already been done. it's just that ignorant hip-hop fans don't hear it because they're closed minded.

the exceptions being true works of brilliance like Paul's Boutique.

yah outkast is kinda cool, i dont like missy eliot though, and the only thing i really like about outkast is how they have catchy non rap chorus's and the delivery of the one rapper is cool but thats about it.

I'm not into rap at all, but Nappy Roots came to the Pizza Hut i work at (laugh) a couple weeks ago when they played a show at the college with The Executioners.

C'mon, silly boy. So the non-ignorant hip-hop fan is the one who can police each new record for "that's already been done" moments? It's even ignoranter to presume to judge rap records on such a superficial level. So is the first guy to throw up a wall of distortion the only 'pioneer'? Was the first guy who decided to improvise on an instrument during a classical performance the only jazz 'pioneer'?

What's absolutely hilarious though, is your "Paul's Boutique" citation, which album is only presumably "brilliant" because all its memorable "hooks" and other tidbits had literally "already been done" by the likes of Dylan, Johnny Cash, Curtis Mayfield, the Beatles and even Alfred Hitchcock/Bernard Hermann (and so on, ad infinitum).

Anyway, I'm only 'biting back' I guess, because your highbrow "ignorant hip-hop fans don't hear it because they're closed minded" type comments are snotty and very wannabelike.

even ignoranter? ok you finished hooked on phonics, move up to hooked on grammar. if you're going to throw around accusations of ignorance, anyway.

snotty and wanna-be-like from a guy with a dennis miller quote in his sig? puh-leeze.

you missed my entire point, anyway. since i don't feel like being a babysitter and explaining everything, i won't. if you don't see why Paul's Boutique was a very pioneering record and well, just about everything else cited in this thread isn't, that's your problem. i'll clue you in: it has nothing to do with a single individual hook, distortion pedal placement or cowbell.

(edit: also, before the almost inevitable reply happens, pioneering and innovative are definitely not requirements of good music. it doesn't even guarantee that it'll be any good. one could argue that john tesh pioneers new landscapes of unlistenable garbage.)

in the handful of beastie boys songs ive heard, everyone has the same rhyming technique where one of them raps a line and the last word is shouted by the rest of them. that gets kinda annoying. that one song is cool though with the video with the cops.

Ebb Vicious and John Deitzel - Christ almighty, will the two of you get over yourselves? I love how you're trying to make a "YOUR MUSIC SUCKS!" argument fair game by flinging around your pseudo-intelligence like so much fucking monkey poo. Music. It's subjective. So shut the fuck up and don't worry about what the next guy listens to.

One more thing: what DOES make Paul's Botique such a great album compared to the others listed? I'm not trying to argue you with you here (in fact, I like PB), but c'mon. If you're going to argue, you better be able to make some valid points towards your persuasion and be able to back your shit up.

And totally off the subject, directed towards Pong: dude, go to some clubs in your area. Yes. A lot of women really do act that way.

good thing JamesM is here to boss everyone around, otherwise nobody would know what to do!

THANK YOU CITIZEN!!!!

(edit: ps, explaining why Paul's Boutique is an important record is like explaining why Sgt. Pepper's is an important record. if i need to do it, you're a retard and i'm not wasting my time on you.)

It was funny, I was watching some MTV special (i think MTV news), and Justin Timberlake said about his new song, that it's raw and he wanted the video to be raw like the song.

Ok, Justin, you turd, if you think that sound of yours is "raw", then you need to get therapy. It's not raw. Your stupid friends tweeked and edited the hell out of your album. A pop song like that being called raw, ha. Gosh, some people make me laugh.

Agreed. You know what else is annoying? That damned vocoder effect that's everywhere now thanks to that damned Cher song a couple of years ago. I only pick up one local AM station in my car, and it's apparently even trickled down to the country music now. If I have to hear one more cracker yodeling through a vocoder, I'm just going to yank the freaking wires and spare myself any future vocal effects-related misery.

yeah that vocal effect is so played out. It's not even anywhere near the zip code of cool. In ten years everyone will be saying, "That vocoder effect is sooo late 90's." I can't believe pop bands don't realize how cheesy it sounds, or how cheesy their entire band is.

Recently overheard in the break room:

"Hey dude, like if you need me to explain why _________ and _____________ then you're just stupid and I won't waste my time, cuz um you're not 'in-the-know' and you don't even know who Peter Travers is, and Frank Black has written half his songs about pricks like ME, not boring old YOU, you uncouth simpleton with your 1983 made boombox and your non-brilliance-having 'closed-minded' listening favorites."

Hey Ebb--you're that boney chick on the Nextel commercial who snorts at Dennis Franz: "Commercials?! I wanna be a SERIOUS actress." What a fag.

And is it possible that I will have to add annotations and footnotes from now on for all the retard "vicious ebbies" on the board? Let me know and on my NEXT post, I will start it off with an "ironic use of language forthcoming" disclaimer. Damn lowest common denominator.

So EbbV, howsabouts taking a brief leave of your constant stream of pompous, vocal jizzings to actually say SOMETHING about SOMETHING aside from the usual "if you don't like to eat shit, then I won't even waste my time trying to convert you--you obviously will never have my sophisticated palette."

Otherwise your new name is LCD.

By the way, Dennis Miller is funny and smart, while you are tiring and a bit slow.
