"sharps and crap"...lol. You have the base notes, and the sharps are one step (one fret) above that. Simple enough to me. Six-Sixty-Six is no doubt the easiest, unless he has a song with a single note.

valentine and garuda is kinda easy becuase its mostly basic open chords you have to learn eventually. cold heart of stone too. of course if you wanna go back to pixies days thats where all the easy songs are. gouge away and subbacultcha are the same thing the entire song.

Six Sixty-Six is by far the easiest Frank song to learn. What's the hardest Frank song to play? I Gotta Move, maybe? I'm not great at guitar or anything so I have a little trouble with that song.

Pixies songs are definitely much easier to play than FB songs (especially lead-wise). I'd say 'Two Reelers' is pretty damn difficult if you haven't a good sense of rhythm. I'm not helping, am I? |

A note to anyone wanting to learn how to play FB songs.....LEARN HOW TO PLAY MAJOR AND MINOR BARRES!!!!! I find time and time again that the barre chords are the hardest ones for a lot of guitarists to pick up, especially on acoustic guitar (harder to "barre" the strings down). But that is basically how Frank plays much of his stuff (rhythms at least), and once you get the hang of em, his songs become pretty easy and you start to see a definitive pattern to his unique song structure.
As far as easiest FB songs.....to me a lot of em are painless, but I've been playing for quite a while and it's hard for me to think as relatively new guitar player...but let's see...I think the following are relatively simple:
Los Angeles Hang On To Your Ego (really easy) Brackish Boy Calistan Jesus Was Right Do You Feel Bad About It 666 I'll Be Blue If It Takes All Night Black Letter Day 21 Reasons Velvety Out Of State
All of those are pretty straightforeward...just get a feel for some basic chords.
IMO, the Pistolero album, while maybe not "difficult", does seem to have a lot of little things going on often, thus making it one of the more difficult albums to play.
Other songs like The Swimmer are all over the place with the sharps and major/minor chord changes. Not hard to play, but a little tricky if you're not familiar with sharps and can't play barres very well. I agree about Blast Off as well, especially with the tuning change.
If I had to pick the harder FB songs to play, I would pick the following:
Two Reelers I Don't Want To Hurt You.... The Adventure & the Resolution I Love Your Brain So Hard To Make Things Out Blast Off Jane the Queen of Love (its all about the timing and "strumming") Fields Of Marigold (just some "odd" patterns/sounds) His Kingly Cave (chords galore...not hard, just some "different" chords)

Hardest FB song to play...wow, that's a toughy...So Hard To Make Things Out is pretty damn hard. Two Reelers has a crazy ass rhythm...Bad, Wicked World is pretty crazy cause it's so damn fast. I'd have to say overall, So Hard To Make Things Out would take the cake.

I don't find "St. Francis Dam Distaster" to be overly difficult...it is all open chords and looks daunting but isn't. "Where is my Mind" is a good song if you want to learn how to play bar chords.

The Cult of Ray song has alot of chords. The rhythm isn't too difficult, but you have to know alot of chord shapes (barre chords). I think i counted the root notes in The Cult of Ray once, and it uses 11 out of the 12 tones as root notes. If i remember correctly...

Mike R mentioned this, but I think the bar chords are tough to get down, so even like "Cold Heart of Stone" would be pretty tough for a new player. Even more so because it, and other ones like "Los Angeles" have you switching from bar to open chords. I mean, for me it's super easy once you learn bar chords to play a straight bar chord song. Just sliding around the same shape or two. But I remember having trouble with even keeping down the two strings on the "easy" F chord with my index finger.
I would say to also keep in mind that if you simply want to be able to sing along to yourself playing a Frank tune, you don't HAVE to learn some exact note-for-note tab or something. Just play the chords that belong there. Like with "Every Time I Go Around Here" you just play the simple chords and sing along. Woo hoo. "You're Such a Wire" is pretty basic too.
Is "At the End of the World" difficult to play? I've never sat down to learn it, but it sure seems like a lot of really quick changes for the verses.

if you're just starting out, just play the powerchords. Like this :
e----
B----
G----
D-5--
A-5--
E-3--
or even :
e----
B----
G----
D----
A-5--
E-3--
Just like a simple bar chord (and with powerchords, you don't have to worry about playing a mayor or minor chord.)
This is not a signature. |
