Well, recently Doolittle has been given an archived review by Pitchfork for their best 100 albums of the 80's, and Rolling Stone for their "Hall of Fame" record section.
The Pitchfork review was good, very good, and stated honestly how vastly important that album is to so many people.
Rolling Stone review was godawful crap. Jesus. I have the mind to write the guy. First they give it 4 stars, 4? why not 5? they give every hall of fame album 5 it seems. The review again, tiredly did the Nirvana thing, it was just awful. Barely mentioned the album. "Courtney Love aped their banshee wails, and Beck drew inspiration from their catalogue of surrealistic lyrics". What? Beck's lyrics are nothign like Franks, and Courtney doesn't scream like Frank either. I dunno, it just seems dumbed down for the masses. It's basically the review of someone who heard the album after they were told it was really important/influential. there's a difference between people who buy an album and fall in love with it, and people who desperately want to fall in love with an album, and are excited when they like what they hear. It shows when they write about it. p.s. the ending of the review is really awkward too. |
