They are on Sunday. Does anyone care who wins? Do you have someone you really want to win? Are you going to watch?
I like to see what people wear and I hope Bill Murray wins, although I don't really think he will. It will probably be Sean Penn in that crying movie I didn't see.
Best picture? Best actress?
Anyone? Bueller?

I would like see Bill Murray give an acceptance speech. Other than that I don't care.
Being the parent of two young kids, Lord of the Rings is the only Oscar movie that I have seen. Well, and Nemo, which must be nominated for something. |

I think we can all agree on this! But I don't think he'll win, nor is he likely to ever be nominated again. But yes, I'll watch (as I always do) and I really fear that LOTR will take the top honor. I mean, it was a good flick and everything but the last (and only) sequel to ever win Best Pic was Godfather Part II. Not for nothing but LOTR ain't no Godfather, you know?

I have actually only seen 2 of the nominated films - The Return of the King and Whale Rider. (Two films made in New Zealand, by the way, but that's a coincidence.) Although I'm an enthusiastic Lord of the Rings fan, ROTK is not my favourite movie in the trilogy and probably doesn't deserve "best picture" IMHO. I guess the Oscar could be considered awarded for the whole trilogy... It would be twisting the rules a bit, but I wouldn't complain.
As for Keisha Castle-Hughes, it may be a bit rushed to award her "best actress" on her first appearance. I mean, she was convincing, especially during the teary bits (much less so when she had to practice the haka...), but let her mature a bit. That would be too much too soon, really.
I'll have to tape the show or wait for a rerun, it's going to be in the middle of the night here...

How can you even try and compare them??? Foolish!!! they are completely different films and are both too good to be thrown into your Movie Colosseum to fight to the death!!!
Tell you what though, what odds on Troy winning one next year. There is no way they can fuck that one up. The Iliad is one of the greatest stories ever, and with the technology at movie-makers disposal nowadays, it should look fantastic also!!!

Yeah, Bill Murray is Chicago guy (a Cubs fan). SCTV is a spin-off the Second City troupe, which started in Chicago. Chicago is the "second city" to New York. |

I always thought SCTV started here and then moved to Toronto. That's it I'm googling. |

I don't think that is true at all. Who would have thought he would have been nominated in the first place? You never know what kind of performances someone will give, and it's not like he is 80 years old or something. Phooey!

Here's the history of Second City with some clips of Murray. It opened in Chicago in 1959 and Toronto in 1973. Bill Murray, John Candy, and Betty Thomas (Hill Street Blues and some directing) debuted together in 1973. The alumni list is insane.

This topic really confuses me... but try this http://www.canoe.ca/TelevisionShowsS/sctv.html
which in one part says this
And as anyone who has lived in Edmonton for a few years likely knows, SCTV was shot here in the early '80s, on the streets of Old Strathcona, the boulevards of Leduc and over at the ITV studios.
but I think you're right Darwin, that it was started in Chicago and someone here bought a franchise or something??? |
