Although I understand that a lot of people think they are childish insults - a sign of immaturity - and pointless, I disagree.
The fact they are so lame makes them harmless and so no one takes offense... unless you're an asian living in slough, in which case it's "don't chat shit about my family, or i'll kill you." or your mum is dead or something... then i'd die of embarassment, but that's the risk i run as a your mum joker!
I get much pleasure from them, and they can be used in everyday situations such as:
"Steven, your homework was very poor!"
"YOU MUM was very poor, last night in bed!"

Shoot, nothin' wrong with playin' the dozens. "Your Mom" jokes are an essential ingredient. The irony/harmless humor of them is pretty self-evident to most people I know.
