The sound qualilty sucked for all the bands, pissed me off. I just woke up and my ears are still ringing, and I could hardly hear anything at time esp. during FB, esp. harder songs, it was too loud to hear.
The Paley trio was only a duo. No drums. He played first. "give me a god damn mother fucking drink" and "give me one chance and I'll fuck it up" were the highlights for me. As he walked off the stage I said, "hey you got a hair cut." He said, "yeah". I said, "this is the 3rd time I've seen you" "You must be a glutton for punishment." he said. I tried to ask him about his guitar, alls he said was that is was a '55 Gretch. Pretty cool. Then I think he might have got laid. I saw him working the "chicks" after that.
So then the Bennies played and once again I couldn't hear very well, even though I was right in front of the stage. They were tight though and I am glad they tour with Frank. Same with Reid.
So then I see this guy with a gottee or a van dike beard or whatever, and he is not small and I'm thinking, "that's Bohemoth" And it was. We watched the whole show together, he helped me with the setlist. Apparently he's pretty good friends with Frank. Made me feel cool. I never saw anyone else from the fb.net there, despite the fact that I asked almost everyone I saw, most people knew nothing of it. Now they do I guess.
Charlottesville is an interesting place to see Frank, much different than a big city like DC. I mean, I walked right up to the front of the stage, well after the opening act ahd started and I had plenty of room. I could have gone to the bathroom, and then walked right back up to front and center of the stage with little to no resistance. Any time I've seen him in the city, the front is already claimed as soon as the doors open. And there are way too many good looking girls in cville for me to handle. I friggin am getting tired of being single. Xbox isn't helping my social life either.
Anyway, then the magic show. I never saw it before and I liked it. My friend got to be the one who gets on stage to hold the light bulb that is supposed to illuminate but it didn't work. Oh well. Dave L. was funny and a real crowd pleaser. It was weird how he was the 3rd act, I would have thought it would be the 1st, but I like the way they did it. It's a lot more accessbile for audience members than some band they've never heard. And it's totally out of the ordinary to have a magic show right before the headliner. Pretty cool shizznizzle.
So then the band comes out to All the Tired Horses and they were off. The hardly stopped at all. Frank hardly spoke a word, the few he did speak I cannot remember after a long island, a pint of double black stout, and 2 Dewars on the rocks.
1. Gouge away 2. Velvety 3. Hermaphroditos 4. Cactus 5. You went so far 6. Manitoba (c d g a e... will be easy for Derek to tab) 7. Nadine 8. I've seen your picture 9. Solid Gold (rocked) 10. Rock and Roll 11. Crackity Jones 12. South Bay 13. Whiskey in your shoes (good tab derek) 14. all my ghosts 15. southbound bevy ---------------- (acoustic) 16. Monkey gone to heaven (love the double pedal steel) 17. Bullet (frank walks over to D. Phillips and says something, then frank walks over to the dumbass sound kid, throws his pick at him and shouts something at him, probably, "you fucking idiot, i can't hear my acoustic through the monitors you dumb fuck) (so that blew the acoustic set) ----------------------------- (electric again) 18. Robert Onion 19. Freedom Rock 20. Horrible Day 21. John the Revelator 22. 666 (the rocking version, no bullshit, actuallly frank said "sometimes they like to throw in covers when the play" before this song, and it wasn't the jammed out version, this was "straight up") 23. California Bound (nailed the falsetto at end, great tab Derek) 24. Steak and Sabre (i loved it) 25. Chip Away Boy 26. Jane, the Queen of Love 27. Heloise (rocked so hard) 28. Sister Isabel (Am and D verse) (Frank broke a string during this song and had no back up guitar??? What's the deal with that? I guess that's what the acoustic was for) (so now frank is not playing a guitar for the rest of the show, only a few breif spurts of air guitar) 29. Wave of Mutilation [ENCORE] 30. Black Rider
And that was that. First show in way too long and I wish I could have made more this time around. Next east coast venture I want to make all of them. They were so tight so togehter. I wish the vocals were clearer and louder, and Gilbert's guitar wasn't loud enough for what he wanted to do. When he tried to solo you could barely hear it, which doesn't fit he playing style. Cool how he only solo's a little bit. It's esier to appreciate then him soloing in almost every song, being overbearing and shit.
It feels great to have seen frank and the gang and the openers and all. I been mising it. I hate myself for not being able to go to more shows, like the DC weekend. Argh. Anyhows, I hope you like my recap. I was able to score frank's pick and I scored a drum stick too. I had to rip the drumstick out of Bohemoth's hands, (sorry dude) I get a little greedy when I am drunk. I wish they played the Scene. Anyhows, if you read all this, sorry for it being so long. Peace to the Greece.

24 hours later my ears are still ringing and I am partially deaf.
I think after all I DO mind a little ear damage.
How the hell does Frank play like that every night and still hear. I mean the only who uses ear plugs is Rich right? And I think he only uses one ear plug and switches ears with it.
Fair warning: if you plan on being close to the stage you might want an ear plug or two.
I hope when I wake up the ringing is gone. I hope i get my hearing back. This sucks.

that sucks LBF, im telling you guys from personal exp that using ear plugs made it more enjoyable (sounded better and no aftereffects), so even though you look like a d-bag its worth it

Let me recomend a set of earplugs - they're called EAR (yep), and cost about 50 dollaros (in norway). I think they might be the best plugs around, if you're not willing to have special plugs voxed for your particular ears (roughly 200 dollaros in norway). They're supposed to cut the volume evenly for all frequencies - and you can even adjust the volume. I never go to a show without them.
You all want to take good care of your ears. I've had constant ringing for over 6 years now after intense use of headsets when recording music - not to be recomended. Headsets are worse for your ears than shows.
By the way - a tip; don't bring your girlfirend to a frank black show if you have troubles and no earplugs. I read somewhere that bad emotional experiences and loud music combined places you in the high risk zone for tinitus - constant ear noise.

they're a little better, but still not right... i don't know what the hell happened... damn, those sound like some nice ear plugs... as a musician and shit, that might help a lot... the normal ear plugs I use when pratising with the band, i feel like i can't hear at all.. that would be cool to have ar plugs where are the frequency's are leveled out proper...
I use a head set when I record but I've only done it it a couple of times... you must have done it for hours eh?

Yeah, me and my girlfriends ears were ringing for a couple days after the show. I too was right in front of the stage. If you remember I was the tall dude with the short black girl with huge hair. The show was amazing by the way. I loved Reid Paley, he was really funny. I wasn't a huge fan of the bennies, didn't like the vocals.

Glad to hear Frank managed to rock my hometown, despite sonic adversity. I was puzzled as to why he'd ever want to play Starr Hill twice, once would definitely turn me off (2001). Sounds like a good turnout, tho.

I just got this show (thanks Matt), and I LOOOOOOOVE it. It sounds so cool! I wish I was there. Velvety is performed perfectly. And 'I Want Rock'n'Roll'. Haven't heard it all yet. Really cool intro to 'Chip Away Boy' - I haven't recognised it. What is wierd is hearing 'Freedom Rock' - unlike most Oldie songs, this one is played just like it was on 'Teenager' so it's like - bamm - you're send straight back to 1994 :-) Omer |
